Ship Inn Seafood and Steak Ratings and Reviews
We went for Thanksgiving. The service was excellent but we were seated in a room entirely by ourselves with a view of the bar which we found disappointing for the holiday.
The main course of turkey with trimmings was tasty with excellent sides but we had only small pieces of turkey as if we got what was left on the bird.
I would pass on the baked Brie app which was served with stale saltines and some Ritz crackers.
A mixed bag but I would give this local favorite another try; appreciate the staff working hard to make a pleasant holiday for others.
Server was less than acceptable. He refilled my water glass 2 times. Each time he grabbed the glass by the rim (rather than the bottom), took the glass to wherever to be refilled, and returned with the same straw and lemon each time. Was this the only glass, straw, and lemon wedge in the restaurant? Server asked me how my meal was. I told him it was very good, except for the mussels. There were mussell shells, but very little inside the shell. I guess he never had a diner say they were disappointed. He said nothing, no apology, etc. Then he walked away and never asked my wife what she thought of her meal (which she had no complaints). We used your reservation system for a special occassion, a birthday celebration Server never asked whose birthday it was and wished that person well. We were one of three couples in the restaurant. Why the server would disappear for long periods of time was not acceptable. Perhaps the fact that we were one of 3 couples in the restaurnat says it all.
The food here is excellent. We have had the Steak Diane many times, it is very tender with a sauce to die for. I tried the strip steak with a brie, sauteed onions and red wine sauce and was wary of the combo. but it worked very well. Our friends had the shrimp francaise and the crabcakes, both excellent. The veggies are not neglected, our friend had the sauteed spinach, and their potatoes and mixed veggies are very flavorful
The only downside was the service, due to understaffing. The bartender was away, which is not uncommon, so the servers fill in. Then everyone has to scramble. The owner should not try to cut corners with this, it is taking away from the otherwise good service. And you feel neglected at the bar.
That said, the food alone would have us return, and the ambiance is great.
This was our first visit and likely our last visit. We arrived on a Sunday evening with a reservation and took two seats at the bar. The restaurant had a stale musty odor and was very humid. The decor of the place is dated and a little tacky. It jneeds refreshing.
It appears the restaurant doesn't employ a bartender on Sunday nights or at least didn't have one that night. As a result we had the curious experience of being the only ones at the bar with virtually no service. There were only about a dozen people in the entire place but nonetheless it took nearly a half hour to get a Caprese Salad. I sat nearly that same time with an empty drink and then we waited another half hour for a wrap and some ravioli. The ravioli was lukewarm at best and didn't come with bread, grated cheese, salt, pepper or anything. I didn't see the waiter again after he dropped the food for fifteen minutes and simple gave up and ate my dish.
The staff seemed oblivious to how long we are waiting for food and how little attention we received. While it is possible they were having issues in the kitchen or were under-staffed there was no appearance of that (three people on the floor with only twelve people in attendance) and there was no explanation in that regard. It simply seemed like the staff slowed down to a crawl on a slow night
If you're a seafood lover, the Ship Inn is great.
I love their signature Ship Inn Seafood Salad with large Scallops, Shrimp and Crabmeat atop a bed of Baby Spinach.
Another winner is their Mussels in Beer with Sausage.
Always our "go to" place when we want great food and great service in an historic setting.
Everything about this restaurant is top notch. It is a beautiful, quaint restaurant where you can relax and enjoy the company of the people you're with. We were looking for a place where we could talk to our friends without screaming to each other above the noise that we usually find when going out to eat. The food was amazing. The wait staff was professional and attentive without being obnoxious. We highly recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.
We were meeting some old friends for dinner and a night out. Our reservation was for 7:15 and our table was ready promptly. Everything about the evening was fantastic, the food was very good, the waitress service exceptional, great ambiance etc. Just do not plan to stay for an after dinner drink the place rolls up @9:45 pm NO EXCEPTIONS !!!! If we had known that we would have went elsewhere for desert, actually we would have left much sooner....
Nice salads and drinks. We ordered both Steak Diane and NY Strip medium rare. Both were served medium well: not close to what we ordered. Luckily, the pieces of meat were juicy, so we did not send them back. Disappointing. Service was fine and the outdoor patio was lovely on an unusually cool July evening.
Dinner was delicious. We heard from friends about the Ship Inn Seafood Platter, we ordered one and The Seafood Paella. We shared both entrees with a bottle of wine, food was delicious and service was top notch. Rolls were hot and fresh and was great for dipping in the seafood broth.
Dessert was shared but so delicious, I could've eaten it all by myself. :)). English toffee pudding with warm caramel sauce.
The hostess / manager checked on us throughout our dinner and gave us an interesting read on the history of the restaurant.
Went to Ship Inn to celebrate Father's Day a day early. We all enjoyed our apps (Roasted Beet Salad and Roquefort Salad were very good, we would pass on the Chicken Brie Quesadilla next time. Sounds good but was only so-so). Entrees were solid. The best one was probably the Shrimp Francaise and Jumbo Lump Crabmeat. Sea Bass Filet was the least liked (not a lot to eat and came sitting in a broth). Desserts were awesome. We split the cheese crapes with cherries and the apple pie. Wines were good (not a great selection but enough to find something). The service was outstanding.
It was really quiet when we got there and when we left! Our waitress really took care of us! She knew her stuff and whenever we had a question for her she would try to figure it out! The owner was also very polite! My Pork Loin was really delicious! Thanks for a very marvelous dinner!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the Ship Inn. The service was perfect. The waitress was very attentive without hovering. The ambiance of this place is one of a kind!! It's a historic gem built in the late 1700's!! The food....the food was AMAZING!! I had the Mushroom bisque and crab cakes for my entree. The bisque was the best I've ever had and the crab cakes were delightful!! They were filled with lump crabmeat and almost no filler, but loaded with amazing flavor and super fresh! My husband had the Steak Diane and he kept raving about how tender the steak was and he LOVED the sauce. We finished dinner off with the bing cherry crepes and they were just as tasty as the rest of the meal. We will definitely be back soon!!
We drive past Ship Inn every few days but frankly had not been there in years despite dining out several times each week. Decided to schedule a birthday dinner there to give it a try.
Service was EXCELLENT, and the highlight of the meal. Food was good, but frankly the menu just feels a bit dated. Very standard seafood, steak, and mostly-carb-heavy for vegetables or sides(potatoes, rice, rolls). Sort of felt like a good place to take your grandmother...
The place was also clean, but needs some TLC, especially outside (get the weeds out of the pavers, for example). Again, sort of feels like going to your grandmother's.
An update to the menu and the ambiance would do much for this restaurant. And if you want to take a relative out for a special meal, or just feel like a very traditional menu of food that will be well-prepared, Ship Inn is a great option. And based on our experience, you will love the exceptional service.
They kept the old with smaller rooms with fireplaces,
then added a more modern look near the bar and outside patio.
People are super friendly and accommodating.
Have been coming here for years, never disappoints!
