When Shinbashi originally opened in 1974 waitresses wearing traditional clothing served the then novel sushi and traditional Japanese dishes. Shinbashi became popular amongst Japanese businessmen visiting New York and the restaurant was reviewed in the New York Times by Ruth Reichi in 1998 calling it "venerable Japanese." The new incarnation is following in the tradition of attracting Japanese guests but does so in a modern setting. The restaurant remains streamlined and cleanly lit so as to showcase the food. Quality of fish and presentation are of the highest standard and it is this attention to detail that is carried into the attentive service. Shinbashi offers an environment for you to appreciate your meal at the pace you choose and the space to enjoy your conversation.

We had the chef’s special sashimi and while the fish was delicious the size of the sashimi was extremely small, barely bite size (I am not kidding). Also, the noise level was crazy loud. On a positive note, the service was very good.

Really a poor experience all round in terms of options or customer service and hospitality. Everything was meh. I brought a business guest and was embarrassed by the experience.

I have been going to Shinbashi for about 5 years. Never disappointed. However I will say one negative thing. I ordered the shinbashi bento box because it has beef negamaki. The disappointment is there were only two pieces of negamaki and chicken on a stick I think 3 pcs. I ordered the bento box because I wanted the negamaki not chicken. It doesn't say anything on the menu about chicken in this box. Next time I will mention it before placing the order.

Very nice service but the food was horrible. The maguro was absolutely not fresh. The tempura was greasy and simply bad tasting. Even the rice was bad. Dessert was OK. Try Sakagura or Soba Totto, both on 43rd St at 2nd Av, for comparably priced food for a much, much better eating experience.

With all of the Japanese restaurants concentrated in the area this is just way too expensive.

Solid if unspectacular. Food is good and service very functional and efficient. Can get very noisy when the restaurant is filled up and the space itself is somewhat spartan. Nevertheless a solid place to hit up in the area as it is pretty big.

Does a good job with the food although nothing spectacular culinary-wise. Seems well staffed and friendly. Space is a bit cavernous and not super warm. Overall a decent spot for good Japanese.

We miss Sushi. Having tasted it in Japan it is hard to find elsewhere. This is a very good proxy. Dit at the bar and enjoy what comes. Don't bother to order, the chef will take care. Simple splendid.

The food was better than average, however, no ambiance. The decor was quite unattractive, and the service was ok. Once our dinner was finished, they couldn't wait to clear the table & get the check so us. It wasn't even 10 o'clock on a Friday night!

Attentive service with very good makes for a perfect business lunch. Space is light and open, not very typical Japanese, but that lends itself to a being a good place for an informal business meal.

Was there for a business lunch with a new client and our sushi, which was an order of 4 simple rolls, took over an hour. When asked where our food was, the server seemed annoyed at our question and said it's coming.

She did not check on us the entire time we waited for our meal.

We had a reservation for a 12:45pm lunch and I didn't leave the restaurant til 2:15pm and missed a 2pm meeting because of it.

Extremely disappointed - would not recommend.

Great option for a quiet dinner after a crowded Radio City experience! Same block as American Girl store yet 'out of the way' feeling and less touristy for dinner. Authentic Japanese, very friendly staff, delicious sushi.

Overall great experience. I took my entire team from work, a little risky since I'd never been before but you can trust the reviews on this one! Everyone loved it! The only downside was it did get extremely loud but I'd say that's typical and hard to avoid in midtown during the work week. Definitely a keeper. We'll be back!

Sooooooo noisy at lunchtime! Absolutely impossible to have a conversation, don't even think about it. Food is OK at best, service is pretty bad, the waiters seem to be overworked and overstressed. I wouldn't recommend.

After eating at literally hundreds and hundreds of Japanese restaurants throughout North America, Shinbashi is by far the "worst" Sushi Bar and deserves no better than customers that seek "all you can eat" low quality sushi. If you are expecting grocery store sushi quality perhaps you will be pleased but you will be paying for sushi at premium price. Rice quality is low, chiefs are not trained, tuna is low quality, terrible presentation, and their black cod is in fact Chilean Sea-bass. Ambiance is nice, but Shinbashi chiefs are the furthest from being authentic Japaneses chiefs. My only suggestion to Shinbashi is to lower you price and target the uneducated sushi customers.

Wonderful chirashi with super fresh sashimi and delicious sushi rice. Ordered an extra item - uni (sea urchin) sashimi which was served in a soup spoon. Extra large portion of green tea ice cream for dessert.

We were able to sit outside during a pleasant June day.

This place was recommended to me by one of my Japanese clients as "one of the very few authentic Japanese spots left". We started off with some drinks along with sushi and sashimi. Sushi and sashimi were very fresh and very high quality. I love the fact that they have a pretty vast drink menu -- my friend had the Sancerre and I had the Kokuryu. My friend loved the Sancerre, and my sake was one of the best that I've had. We then had Sukiyaki afterwards, and it was amazing!! The broth that came with it was ridiculously awesome, and the staff was very attentive in helping us with it. I'm already thinking of which dishes and sake I will need to try next - Must come back!!

I found plastic in my beef teriyaki and the restaurant refused to believe it was true. Said that if I didn't like food I could go to SushiAnn and Sushiden. That is absolutely true bc Shinbashi is not in same league as SushiAnn or Sushiden. Prices are about the same but the food and service is not comparable. Absolutely rude manager and wait staff. They rush and spill soy sauce on table. Avoid.

The chawamushi was very good however the quality of the sushi was reasonable. I was taken aback by the service staff who is a bit loud and the way she come across when repeating or checking with customer was rude. During the meal the waitress seems to have some issue with the other waiter and had a loud argument but managed to be stop by the manager. Overall the experience would have be nicer if the service staff are being trained with some ethnic during service time
