Shiki Bistro offers authentic Japanese cuisine, a full bar and a modern and metropolitan Japanese atmosphere. Not one to rest on its laurels, Shiki and its chefs strive to redefine what traditional Japanese cuisine looks like by constantly refining and revising its menu to reflect customer input, including the chefs' latest and greatest creations. Enjoy their creative cocktail concoctions as well, like the Blue Sapphire, Orange Cosmopolitan or the Bistro Lychee Martini. The restaurant is conveniently located in San Carlos' Laurel Street shopping district and is open for business meetings, birthday celebrations and other special occasions. If you crave a quiet setting, order Shiki Bistro's delectable Japanese dishes to go and enjoy them from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
This is a great restaurant with wonderful service and excellent food. The sushi was very fresh and the beef, chicken and tempura dishes were also much better than most of the Japanese restaurants in the area. We had great service with the wait staff knowing exactly when to come back to refill glasses and clear the table without interrupting our conversation.
Overall, we had a great experience and plan to come back often.
Fantastic happy hour menu selection - good rolls selections and nigri selections for happy hour - great value.
For price and quality of their food, this place can't be beat. San Carlos has a lot of restaurants This is one of the top three. You never know how crowded they are going to be, but without a reservation on Tuesday, you would have had a very long wait. We've never had a dish we didn't like. There are at least 4 sushi restaurants in San Carlos and you can't beat this one.
the food is always fresh and the Sushi tastes wonderful. The only drawback is that the restaurant is cold, and most of the times that I have gone to Shiki Bistro the restaurant is empty. Very empty. But the food is excellent I would highly recommend that you come for the food not the ambiance. The waiters could be a bit more attentive, but the majority of the time the waiters are good.
I have tried every sushi restaurant in San Carlos. A few of them at least 5 times. My daughter took me to Shiki Bistro 2 years ago and since then, we have never returned to any of the other San Carlos Sushi restaurants. Love the menu, the service, the friendly waiters, the decor is fabulous. We always try something new on the menu and have loved all of it! So glad you found your way onto Laurel Avenue.
The food here is really good. They have a wide menu, and everything we ordered was fantastic. Due to having two kids under the age of 3, we were also pleasantly surprised that there can be a restaurant with such good food and pleasant ambiance that is fit for families. I strongly recommend checking this place out if you are a fan of Asian food.
Five of us (3 fifty-something's and 2 nine year olds) had reservations Saturday night, 11/22/14. We were seated quickly and the server immediately asked my kids what they wanted. Smart girl. Appetizers and drinks were prompt, and we were give ample time to peruse the menu. Scallops were a special that night, and they were served thinly cut between lemon slices. Awesome. Nigiri was excellent, as were the rolls. Not a huge roll fan myself, but these weren't slathered with some unidentifiable sauce, and the seafood was the attraction. I had heard that it was noisy, but the volume was really ambient noise. Overall, an outstanding experience.
Bonus to note, great full bar and selection of specialty drinks. This is a wonderful location and we can always count on great sushi with fresh ingredients. Best to make reservations on weekends, but walk-in wait is rarely too long. The sashimi combination is an excellent variety of fish, generous cuts and so buttery fresh. By far, the best tempura preparation in the Bay Area. We have dined at many places, and always sample two specific dishes: Agadashi Tofu and Tempura combinations. Shiki uses a nice light panko and it is crisp without being oily. So many places over bread the tempura and make it very heavy. So many rolls to choose from too! We enjoy many of the varieties, and recommend everyone try them out!
Service was great but food fell a bit short. The sushi roll was so small for the price. Having live music was a nice touch but it was too loud for regular conversation.
This was our second visit and we enjoyed it even more than the first time. The sushi is very fresh (you can watch them being made) and full of flavor. The combinations of ingredients are very interesting. Portions are very generous - we ordered four dishes for the two of us and had plenty to eat. We especially liked the ahi tuna in a spicy sauce and the jalapeno peppers stuffed with shrimp. Service is fast. This is becoming one of our favorite local restaurants.
Got to Shiki by 5:45 Friday night to indulge in many happy hour specials, $5 wine and margaritas, inexpensive but extensive HH menu, and overall frivolity.Service is better than before, efficient and polite.Like their Ahi Poke, California rolls and tempura.Generous portions, tempura had crisp batter, large shrimp, yummy veggies.Overall very happy.
Taylor chose to go to Shiki for her birthday for the beef udon which she loves. The salmon bento is good and the pork ramen is Brandon's fave. Kelvin tried the sushi lunch which was good but not enough.
Per the title I would also like to add tempura and saki. Stick with those food items and you cannot err. I do not recommend any of the teriyaki meat, chicken or fish. I have tried all of them, every time I have been disappointed, these combo options the mea/salmon has always been cut paper thin and served dry and tough, flavor is off. But, as long as you stick with my suggestions you will be very pleased as the sushi selection is outstanding and fresh. The saki sampler is also very nice.
This is my third visit and each time I'm a little disappointed. I keep giving a second chance. Mainly I find the fish.. The sushi a bit dry and tired. Also unimaginative. But I'm a sushi lover. This last visit I ordered eel over rice for lunch.. Again, the eel with the anticipation of tender and juicy.... was dry without much sauce.
Dour, cold unresponsive servers...had to flag them down several times even though they walked by us often. They never checked in with us. Spiderman roll okay. Veggie tempura was just warm which is just not good for deep fried food. Green tea ice cream too bitter. Chocolate
Souffle not a souffle at all, but an overcooked lava cake. Boo hoo.
This is our go to spot for sushi ! I love their sashimi, extremely fresh but their service has been poor the last few times we've invited friends. It's disappointing.
I have the receipt. Please call me and change my no show to showed up and actually ate at the restaurant.
I had the see bass and it was just OK, not spectacular. Decent sashimi. Nice atmosphere. The one star is for the incidient that happened after our meal. After using opentable check, my bill came out to be $25.67, not bad right. Well, they accidentally charged $2,567.00 on my debit visa card! They were able to void it, however not w/out the money coming out of the account! It took 2 days for the money to go back in to the account! I was expecting a complimentary dessert BUT nothing, just a "oh, the machine made a mistake". I would try that place again, but I will definitely be using cash or a regular credit card.
we had great service, a fun time and the sushi was delicious and fresh tasting
Always the destination for my favorite sushi & tempura prawns and vegetables. I did not rate the brunch or wine list. I have the saki sampler.
Romantic depends on who your neighbors are, if you have a family with young children across from you, not romantic. There is seating at the front and at the back for groups, maybe a maximum of 16 - 20 people, my guess-timate.
Fish is always fresh and firm. The team always does a good job and ambiance is very friendly; plus Vikki is fun too!
Good variety, good service and fun to go to with friends.
We have enjoyed dining at Shiki Bistro many many times. The food is always very flavorful, and nicely prepared. We appreciate the consistency and look forward to dining at the San Carlos restaurant. The sashimi (Chef's choice) is generous and one of the best we have had. Our serving included butterfish which is so flavorful. We enjoy a variety of sushi rolls, including the Honey Crunch roll, the Aki roll, Red Dragon roll, and many others. The Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura appetizer and Agedashi Tofu are excellent. Too many restaurants over bread the tofu and lack the tender texture. We have been to many other places that just do not know how to make this dish. Shiki really does it right! Also, they have a full bar with some creative drinks!
Sushi was outstanding. Fresh!!!! Beautiful place. staff was very attentive and welcoming..returning customer!!!
Very large space with many tables, some private, and a huge bar. Service was fine and food good. Portions were large and priced accordingly. Practically empty between lunch and dinner so no wait.
We had made an Open Table reservation for 11:30 a.m. but it was closed even though they had a special sign on the door they would be open at 11:30 a.m. So we called to let them know that we are waiting outside. Finally, they let us in and notified us that their computer was down so they didn't know about our reservations. They normally open at noontime on Saturday and Sundays.
The food was very fresh and tasty. They still remain as one of my favorite restaurants. Hopefully, we won't be locked out the next time.
I have been coming to this restaurant for some time now. They have the best California Rolls that I have ever eaten. I have eaten at many Japanese Restaurants and their California Rolls are the freshest and the best.
We enjoyed the saki and sushi, a great selection. If you're not in the mood for sushi, a very nice dinner menu is available.
My favorite is the tempura teriyaki combo.
Our kids enjoy the tempura udon and pork ramen. It's great to have the opportunity to park in the parking lot.
Shared 4 different rolls, all tasty. Cold sake sampler - also tasty but still prefer hot. Service and food good.
Get there before 6:00pm for $3 draft beers and great prices on sushi. Try the Godzilla roll!
We love the food at this restaurant but the service was bad. We made a reservation because they seem to always be busy. This was a special occasion and they DID NOT have a table for us. Even arriving a few minutes early to ensure our table they told us they didn't have anything available and we could sit at the bar. How do you sit at the bar with children under 10. We eventually were seated but not after some discussion with the greeter. Food is good but don't expect great service.
We had a very nice enjoyable dinner. We started with an order of avocado rolls, for dinner my husband had the teriyaki chicken dinner, I had the combination Tempura & steak dinner. Even though it was a Sunday evening, people were waiting to be seated. I'm glad I had made a reservation, as we only waited until a booth was prepared and we were seated.
Consistently good food- great sushi and rolls, nice atmosphere with friendly service.
I took my team here to celebrate after we completed some important milestones on client work. Parking is usually easy enough to find, food here is always mouth-watering good, and the service is prompt and easy. And the sake sampler is always fun! The food is fresh and choices have just the right amount of variety.
Great specialty rolls. This is the more upscale of the three branches. The flaming roll is kitschy but a must-try!
Great night. They were able to squeeze us in for a late dinner. We didn't get the "Valentines special" but the good was great.
Good quality sushi and sashimi - generous slices, very fresh. Plenty of private parking at lunchtime. Quiet and attractive.
Sashimi was good but very cold, so not as tasty as it could have been. Staff friendly but heavily accented so a bit hard to understand.
The food was delicious and the owner was gracious - be careful with the bar drinks though - you may have to tell the bartender directly what drink you want, as the servers do not seem to have any knowledge of a liquor menu....
