Shiki Bistro offers authentic Japanese cuisine, a full bar and a modern and metropolitan Japanese atmosphere. Not one to rest on its laurels, Shiki and its chefs strive to redefine what traditional Japanese cuisine looks like by constantly refining and revising its menu to reflect customer input, including the chefs' latest and greatest creations. Enjoy their creative cocktail concoctions as well, like the Blue Sapphire, Orange Cosmopolitan or the Bistro Lychee Martini. The restaurant is conveniently located in San Carlos' Laurel Street shopping district and is open for business meetings, birthday celebrations and other special occasions. If you crave a quiet setting, order Shiki Bistro's delectable Japanese dishes to go and enjoy them from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Shiki has been working on their service and it shows was.Beautiful smiling wait person was very kind no andhelpful. The sushi andramenarealways good as istheveggieand shrimp tempura, light and airy.Yum.
We frequent Shiki at least monthly. The variety on the menu is very good, no complaints about the quality of the food or raw fish, they typically have seating, and I have no complaints about the service. Overall it's a great last minute choice in a packed San Carlos/Redwood City area.
Really enjoy the excellent seafood, the fast service, and the ambiance!
Terrific happy hour and great options. Sushi is very fresh and their service seems to be improving. They had a good band playing in the bar that was just the right noise level to enjoy but not make you have to raise your voice to talk to your table.
Yaki ramen is the only dish we'd recommend. The kid's meal is very cutely displayed, but at $12.99 - quite pricey. Udon is average. Rolls are less than impressive (something about the sushi rice they didn't quite get right). Edmamme is soggy.
We felt rushed and the rolls seemed to be warm as if sitting out for a while. Like they were pre-made. It doesn't appear to be as fresh.
I really hate the way Open Table forces you to submit a review on the mobile app before you can make a reservation. Competitors are you listening?
We have been to Shiki Bistro nearly a hundred times. The quality is currently excellent.Service is gracious and efficient now, and the food is first rate.Love their tempura!
The sushi is always good and very fresh - enjoy the restaurant. Service could use some attention.
We did not go for sushi, but just for some good Japanese food. My husband's dinner arrived before we finished the soup & salad. I had to wait until he was almost done for my dinner... The dinner plates were freezing cold. This is in contrast to the tea and tea cups which were almost too hot to the touch. I needed a napkin to hold mine. ( no handles ).
The food was fairly good, but not great...It would be much better on a hot plate for the cold winter night.
But the real issue was not any of the above it was the techno music that constantly played over and over again. It made me feel nervous. I understand they want to be modern , but what amount some nice mellow slow jazz??
Make a reservation on a Friday or Saturday as it can get busy
Very good. Wish they had a few more options with rolls.
The seafood udon came out piping hot and was quite delicious. They have great a great selection of food and cocktails for happy hour. The full bar is a plus.
It was really busy for dinner, full house. Arrived too early for reservation so we grabbed seats at the sushi bar. Playoff baseball on TV. Friendly, happy crowd. Good food. Good service.
We have gone to Shiki Bistro for years with friends.Their happy hour is a real value. It concludes at 6:00 p m, but features $5 Chardonnay, $3 Beer and $3 and $5 small plates. We enjoyed many of them, including edamame and tuna poke.Ultimately we spent $60 per couple, but had wonderful tempura, calamari, Rainbow Roll and California Roll.Service has improved. It was a great night, though noisy.
I've been here many times and the sushi is consistently delicious. We typically order the handrolls, the honey walnut rolls, the devil's roll, etc. Always good and hasn't disappointed.
The sushi is always delicious at Shiki as well as the ramen. However, the cocktails at the bar weren't very good. None of us were able to take more than 2-3 sips of our drinks. They seemed off.
Fantastic happy hour menu at really good prices.
Excellent quality fish. Good value andbservice
We had a nice birthday dinner...Taylor had beef udon and I had chicken udon and Brandon and daddy had pork ramen. It was nice having a carafe of water and nice to park in the lot. They don't provide any special thing for birthdays.
Gotta go for happy hour. About half price compared to regular menu and just as tasty!
Great Japanese food at Shiki Bistro. We went because we had a gift card to Shiki. The food was fresh and very well prepared. It was a little on the pricey side (about $60 for dinner for two, including one appetizer but no alcoholic drinks), but that's probably not shocking nowadays for nicer dining. Anyway, great Japanese food.
The only downside is that we were seated next to a table with "active" (loud) toddlers, so the decibel level was higher than we were hoping for on a romantic evening out, but the food quality overweighed the sound level. We'd certainly go again, an hope for (or request) seating in a quieter area.
I have been to this restaurant many times over the last few years however the prices keep going up and the portions are much smaller than in the last. It's a good value for lunch but highly over priced for dinner.
Great food and service! Definitely we will be back. Reasonable prices especially for happy hour.
Glad there was a happy hour menu & it was great that the wait staff helped us add things from it at the happy hour prices before happy hour ended!
Everything I ordered turn out delicious and service was great. Three people serve our table with smile. I took my old high school buddies whom were miss in actions for almost 40 years to this restaurant after saw good review. It was a great experience and I will return many times.
The food was great and so was the service. It was a fairly quiet night. Location is great on Laurel street. Nice for a stroll after. Actually sauntered down the block to Town for dessert and drinks.
We go to Shiki almost every week. Good sushi, nice, hip atmosphere, roomy — we like to sit in the booths. Good for families. Service is a little uneven. Sometimes it takes us a while to flag down a server for more napkins or chopsticks, etc. Food always arrives quickly. (Sometimes too quickly and I wish they would space it out a bit.) Overall, we are happy with Shiki and would recommend it to friends who like sushi.
Godzilla roll and Goma tuna tataki are crazy good!
Shiki Bistro is a very popular dining experience in our town. Reservations recommended for prime time dining and in advance for holidays. I love sushi and sake and theirs is not only great but close to home. I had ... and recommend ... the Dragon Roll and the Fuyu Roll. It was YUM!! Service was excellent and quickly accommodated a last minute change for a takeout order. Rolls - the really good ones - are on average 13-15 each, so reasonable compared to many other restaurants with fine dining. Try it if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed. :)
Portions of food sufficient for women, but not enough for men
Should be bigger portions, or add sides.
Forgot half the order
I rarely write reviews, but had to share my experience. I went to this restaurant for lunch with friends when it first opened several years ago. It was good. Beautiful interior. So my husband wanted to go there for special dinner. While the service was efficient, the waitresses had no personality. They just showed up took our order, brought our food, cleared our plates, brought our check. That was it. Didn't ask if we needed anything , how was dinner, did we want dessert - nothing. I ordered salmon teriyaki. Plenty of salmon, but somewhat bland. We were both so disappointed. We won't be coming back. There are too many good Japanese restaurants that put more effort into their service and appreciation for their customers.
I used to like Shiki as the atmosphere is great and food is good. However their service has gone down hill in the last year. It is so sad as this used to be our go-to place for Japanese food. During our last visit the waiter never stopped to see how we were doing, we had to flag down a waiter to get utensils for one person in our party (they only gave us three sets of chopsticks for 4 people) and the food came out randomly. They completely forgot about one of our rolls and when we asked about it one of the waiters acted like it was a huge inconvenience to check! This used to be a nice place to have dinner however we will not be returning. Very disappointing.
I'm sad to write this review because I've dined at this restaurant for so long and love the food. Unfortunately, my partner and I hosted a vendor at lunch and the service was awful. The waitress pointed us to a table and told us to sit as she walked by to deliver food to a table. Then after sitting down a bus person delivered water without asking. And there's a sign in the middle of the table that says "water only upon request."
No menus for about 15 minutes, until I finally asked for them. The waiter looked confused, like he wasn't sure if he was our waiter.
He eventually came back to take our order - probably another 15 minutes. This is when all the fun began. First course - soup and salad. Waiter placed the soup in front of our guest and her salad across the table where she had to stand up to reach for it. Really?
Our guest's main course appeared first. No apology or assurance that mine and my partner's would be coming soon.
My partner's lunch came next - about 10 minutes later. Again no word on when mine would arrive.
My lunch appeared about 5 minutes later.
Waiter never came to check on us - not once. I had to talk to the back of his head as he stood at the computer to get his attention to ask for the check.
We were embarrassed and apologetic to our guest. We'll never bring anyone to this restaurant again. Perhaps we'll order takeout because we do like the food. If you dine here, make sure you have a lot of time and patience.
Oh - footnote - they were NOT at all busy. Maybe 10 tables were full when we arrived. A few more came after us.
Shiki is our favorite go-to sushi restaurants for very fresh nigiri sushi and yummy, creative rolls. Salads, tempura and entrees are also on the menu, and there are occasional specials. The service is fantastic and we like that there's a full bar, as well as sake and beer. We always leave Shiki happy and our checkbook is happy too. All in all, it's a great place that we can highly recommend.
Visited on a Thursday night and saw the talented Tom Jackman playing guitar and singing great songs from several decades - fantastic! The room is large and well decorated, but very comfortable and intimate feeling with the help of over-sized curved booths. The food was quite tasty. My party had a wonderful time!!
It was amazing food it was a little spicy if you really like spicy food go there it's the best sushi I have in along time it's a unique place in San Carlos it's expensive but it's worth it to go their id you don't want italin food and want something different to eat go to shiki bistro it's Assamese you eat there roles and tofo and anything for want it's the beat place yo eat
Consistent. Great kids meal. Great staples - gets busy, get a reservation !
The overall experience was "ok". Sushi was not anything special and fine if you are in the area and interested in having a bit of Sushi. If you want really good Sushi, go to Sushi Sam's in San Mateo.
