That’s Shift — dining in the movement.
Valentine's Day was awesome at Shift! It is one of our favorite restaurants and it was over the top that night! Everything is house made and we always leave saying how good it was. Valentine's Day was a Duck ham starter. We then had chef em's spaghetti and meatball. Delicious!! Next was chef joe's herb roasted pork loin on a butternut smear with homemade apple sauce. Dessert was delicious, chef Dara's chocolate cake filled with beet ganache and little meringues. Love sitting at the chef's bar!!
We especially chose this restaurant to celebrate a special birthday, and once again, everything from the sweet potatoes, the mussels/chorizo, the shrimp pappardelle, the short ribs, the brassica salad, the flourless chocolate cake and the canolli (sp?) were exceptional!! The wait staff made our friend feel like a king - we absolutely love this restaurant!!!
Excellent, tasty and fun meal at Shift friday. We sat at the bar and watched the professionals in action.
Shift is an absolute must eat in Flagstaff. The culinary works of Joe and Dara are incredible. Do yourself a favor and eat here. The menu changes weekly, and it is never disappointing.
Flagstaff has come up in the world! Shift is warm and welcoming to the average person looking for lunch or dinner, and enticing for foodies or wanna-be foodies like me. It's a place to share small plates. First we ordered cocktails, which are unusual and interesting looking, and are probably good, but we had a little trouble because I wanted to modify mine to be less sweet. My fault, I've learned now to just order the drink exactly as I like it and not put the pressure on the server and bartender. My dining companion had a very nice cocktail off the menu. We ordered the sourdough bread with the butter of the week, pickled sweet potato french fries, and tomato soup with grilled cheese. All were delicious - although I didn't care for the rind in the Meyer lemon butter that came with the sourdough bread. I am sorry to even tell you how amazing the tomato soup with "grilled cheese" was, because it looks like they have already changed the menu and it's not on the this week's version. The presentation was beautiful also, with the open faced grilled cheese in the soup bowl and the tomato soup poured around it. Everything melted in my mouth. If I lived in Flagstaff, I would probably eat at Shift once a week, so as not to miss any of their creations.
At first we were a bit worried about the limited menu. The staff was great at recommendations. Our entire group loved the food! Great cocktails and wine as well! We will definitely go back! The Brussel Sprouts, French Fries and Beet Salad were my faves!!!!
From the information about the evening New Year's Eve's seatings it gave me the impression that for a couple it was $70 total; not $70 person! Great tasting food with very good presentation. I wanted to complain right there as others at our table were shocked as well however I didn't want to disturb the even fun we were trying to have.
Where to begin?? The special seven course meal for new Year's Eve was just that - truly special - AND each course quite simply built upon the other, making this meal a gastronomical delight!! The courses were lovingly prepared, visually splendid and delicious from start to finish. One would think that "small plates" would leave you wanting more, but we left, definitely wanting more of Shift, but totally satiated from the wonderful food, the great, attentive waitstaff, and the ambience of the entire meal/experience. We have decided that this must become our annual tradition.... the New Year's Eve meal at Shift!!!
Really enjoyed the entire experience. The staff was welcoming and it was fun to see it all happening from the bar. From start to finish the food and wine was great. We felt that extra special treatment on our wedding anniversary. I would say go anytime you want something special or even when you just want good food. Great place and look forward to going back soon!
Our second time here. This time, every thing we tried was delicious. Ranks up there with the best restaurants in Flagstaff
Shift Kitchen and Bar was a great experience, it is quite nice to find a restaurant like this one in Flagstaff. We reserved online and asked to be seated at the bar, this is where all the magic happen! We arrived a little bit early so we decided to have a drink at a table, I had a glass of the Pinot Noir Rose which was very nice. We had time to look over the menu while we waited (the menu changes almost everyday!) When we actually sat down, my husband and I ordered the Veal Rillettes which were delicious, very tasty. It came with some pickled onions (I am a big fan of pickled onions ........) Then we ordered the Lamb Tartar, I was a little bit hesitant to get it at first but the waitress told us it was a big success. She was right, it was very good! What I enjoy the most about this restaurant is the concept, the chefs are cooking right in front of you. This what made our experience very enjoyable and unique. We will be back next time we are in Flagstaff!
Such a lovely treat! I was looking for a place with gf and vegetarian options and this was perfect! The menu was amazingly complex and well thought out. It's not a huge menu but everything we tried- many items we'd never heard of- was delicious. The Pork Trooters were phenomenal. If your in an adventurous mood, definitely go here. If you are a meat and potatoes huge plate of food person, this is probably not you place. Smaller plates but prices are great. It's got style and panache. The chef is amazing....James Beard potential.
I am never disappointed at this restaurant. Great service and amazing food. The menu also changes so there are new things to try. My friends and I love the small plates and sharing!
As you can see from our reservations...this establishment is fantastic!!! We love it, loved the community dinner on Monday and continue to go as often as possible.... A must for all to try!!!
This place is great! The food is top notch and the owners were so nice and personable. We really enjoyed sitting at the counter to watch the kitchen staff work together and also getting the chance to talk with the chef/owners. It was also fun to chat with others sitting at the counter to see what they were ordering---everyone we talked with loved their food too!
Suffice it to say that this is by far our most favorite restaurant in Northern Arizona.
The short rib pot roast was fork tender, the grilled romaine delightful, garlic bread perfect for the juices from the pot roast and the gluten free blueberry crisp heavenly. Have I conveyed what a delectably wonderful meal this was??
We had an amazing meal at Shift!! The food is so inventive! The chefs take such care and are so creative with using different ingredients they locally source and prepare. Their use of pickled and fermented ingredients that they make inhouse is fabulous !! Who knew that pickled French fries would be so delicious!! The owners Dara and Joe and their staff are great and gracious. Dara is the pastry chef and you have to be sure to save room for desert! Definitely our best dining experience in Arizona!! If you are in Flagstaff you shouldn't miss this gem✨
Service was great! Reminded me of a restaurant in San Diego. Our expectations were exceeded. Recommend this place to anyone wanted to have great food with great service.
The food is delicious; a different blend of tapas is on the menu; would recommend asking for the "chefs table" in front of the grill!
Seriously~ the friends we took, who are from California said, simply, "This is the BEST food we've ever eaten!! We are coming back and bringing friends!!"
This was one of the most friendly and delicious experiences in our lives. We ate here twice in 12 hours and wish we could live there with the shift crew. This place is a total gem with funny and lovely staff.
We had friends in from out of state who had been reading all the positive reviews about Shift and requested that we go. We started with the tomato sorbet and the beet fritters, thinking, goodness, these can't be topped for the exquisite tastes. Yet we continued to try many items on the menu... the kale pasta dish ( I can't remember the actual name), the pickled french fries, the summer squash custard and the beef dishes were all outstanding! Our server, was patient and helpful as we discussed the mouth watering dishes we were experiencing. We completed our our meal with two delicious desserts - the celery panna cotta and the hoppy white chocolate ganache were amazing. All in all, we were beyond full and very content with all of our choices. We plan to return this coming week with more friends from out of state - for all of our dining pleasure.
Another fantastic experience, from the apps to the main courses. And the celery-infused panna cotta was amazing.
The food was amazing and we will definitely be returning to this spot. The service was fast and friendly and the chefs and owners of Shift were a delight to talk to as they prepared our fabulous meal....
Atmosphere and service were great. Food was in general great -- really appreciated the local food options. Some of the main courses were a little "overly salty" without having much specific taste otherwise. By this I mean that the food was interesting and made interestingly but the seasoning itself was overly salted.
The food was unusual, well prepared, and delicious.initially, we were in a small room that was extremely noise. Ultimately, they moved us to a more suitable quiet table. Most the seating was at a counter and not conducive to conversation of mire than two people . Definitely a limitation.
Awesome....again! Very accommodating of our seating wishes and thorough explanation of each dish we tried. Fantastic experience.
Very special and excellent food. Nice to have a decent wine list in Flagstaff. Very special for this little town.
Great place to try new dishes with new and unexpected flavors.
Once again, the chefs and staff at Shift did not disappoint. This is our tenth visit. There were eight of us, celebrating a birthday. We chose to try just about everything on the menu, as the menu changes with a fair amount of frequency. Each and every dish we tried was met with oohs and as.... and wonderment at the creativity and delectability of every dish, from the tomato sorbet, the octopus, the barbacoa to the coconut dessert and everything in between. We couldn't pick a favorite! This is without a doubt our very favorite restaurant in Flagstaff....maybe in Arizona!!
A really great tapas restaurant in Flagstaff, of all places (actually, Flagstaff is developing a very nice foodie culture). The chefs are creative and know what they're doing in the kitchen -- sit at the chef's bar if you want to see and chat. And the service is friendly and efficient. Highly recommended!
Second time there. Menu changes constantly, so it's hard not to keep ordering and ordering and ordering because of the curiosity factor, and the fact that each dish is superb! Have recommended to friends, and it's definitely a go-to in Flagstaff!
Unbelievable experience sitting at chef's counter. This is a big city dining experience in a small town. Could've been in San Fran or Chicago! Hardly ever write these reviews, but we loved our experience and wish the restaurant and its chef/owners well!!!
The food was wonderful and it was neat to see inside the kitchen while we ate and get to chat with the chefs. The cocktails were also spot-on. I'm so glad Shift is here!
The food and cocktails were outstanding. The baby romaine dish was one of the most delicious things I've ever put in my mouth. Not cheap, but high quality.
Again, a really fun dining experience at Shift. Ordering small plates allows sharing and encourages conversations which is always fun. I also appreciate the owners' frankness about what they do and don't offer - when I tried to make reservations for a different occasion, they said they'd love my business but didn't think it would be quiet enough for a business conversation on a Monday night Chef's Dinner. I really appreciated their frankness, and the wait staff's honesty about the food.
A suggestion: offer dinner guests the option of clean plates partway through the meal so the flavors don't get muddied by re-using the same plate too many times
My current favorite place to eat in Flagstaff!
Excellent food. Great staff! Visiting Flagstaff and found this place for dinner. So good, went back for brunch the next day and it was even better!
The food was incredible! Great service as well. Very well informed staff, when it came to food and beverage suggestions, our waitress had the answers. Love this place! The owners are the best! They love to feed people.
