Food is very good but a bit precious. For the price I would expect a little more to the entree dish.
The starters were absolutely amazing (gorgonzola and the fried smelt) but the pastas were disappointing by comparison. Very bland we thought. Not bad, the pastas was clearly fresh, but couldn't compare to the starters. If we go back, we might just have a whole bunch of starters.
Food was very good. We were disappointed in the atmosphere and the service. Behind our table was a very loud group who seemed to know the owner. They were very boisterous and swearing loudly. Also, service was just ok. Our server seemed bothered whenever we asked for something. Also, the pastas on the menu are appetizer portions. Only when you order are you told that they are not entree portions...that is an upcharge. One member of our party ordered the entree portion, but what came out was clearly the appetizer portion. When asked, there were conflicting responses from the staff. They ultimately decided that it was the entree portion, but was in the appetizer sized bowl. A good service restaurant would have apologized that the customer was not happy and either given additional food, only charged appetizer rate, offered a free drink...anything to recognize that at the least there was an error in the portion size or plate size. Also, 20% tip was automatically added for party of 6. Most restaurants only do that for parties of 8 or more and generally do it at 18% with the discretion to go higher. We mostly enjoyed the food, but will likely not be returning.
perfect place to celebrate with family and/ or friends.
My wife and I both love cooking so if we are going to go out we want to be wowed the the food. Were we ever wowed! The presentation was outstanding and the food tasted wonderful. I left wanting to come back and try other items on the menu.
Excellent food, as always, with this elegant restaurant that produces great results from local farm produce. Bluefish pate is always outstanding. Seared tuna excellent. We had a variety of vegetable dishes, all of which were creative and interesting. The desserts weren't quite on par but were still good.
We had a 6:00 reservation so the noise level may not be indicative of busier times. Food was great. Had the bouillabaisse and the gnudi. Both were delicious. The roasted carrots were also very good.
Lovely dinner, small menu, good portion sizes. Disappointed with the lack of gluten free options
This was our second time at Shepard and always a great choice for date night!
Service and Food is amazing. They take care of every detail and make sure everyone is happy.
Nice atmosphere. Likes the carrots app, the greens salad with truffle dressing, and the roast chicken.
Calamari app was ok. Family who got the gnudi, tagliatelle, and vongole said they were alright/decent.
Desserts were great — apple cremeaux, ice cream sandwich, and bread pudding.
Our server was friendly and quick, was not overbearing; I appreciate having time between courses and the space was open so I did not feel like a sardine in a busy space.
Service adequate. Food fine, but lacked some intensity of flavor. Limited options for dairy free meal. Gem lettuce salad was literally just that...leaves of gem lettuce. Fried smelts had little flavor. Steak Frites was fine. Grilled calamari was good, but overall no dish stood out as special. Atmosphere is kind of cool, spartan, but cold. So, experience was fine, but really nothing to write home about.
Absolutely loved it! Highly recommend. Service was exceptional and the food was amazing. Can't wait to return.
Excellent food. Ridiculously overpriced. Wine list very good but a bit restricted and also, hugely overpriced.
Outstanding service and food!
Food was good but the fruit flies ruined the expierence
We love Shepard’s! The menu keeps changing with the seasons and it always manages to surprise us with carefully selected combinations of unexpected ingredients. It is also cozy (even if a bit noisy with the crowd) and they have good coffee (not so common in Boston area).
My friends and I had a nice evening here - food was good, service was fine. But they have the most annoying way of serving. We were not in a hurry and wanted our meal "staged," that is, our starter first followed by our main dishes. Instead our hot entrees and cold appetizer all came out at the same time, defeating the purpose of having a starter followed by the entree. This happened to me the only other time I went to Shepard. Despite the very good food and nice ambience, I am unlikely to return.
I can't deny the quality of the food was good, but it came wrapped up in a sterile atmosphere.
I'm sure some people like that vibe, but to me that trend is over played and always missed the mark.
Service was good, but somewhat awkward (affected). Despite the good food, this place doesn't call me back.
Love their fresh farm to table menu, the quality of food and quiet unpretentious vibes. Highly recommend it!
We come often to Shepard and appreciate the good food and warm atmosphere. Our usual waiter, David, offers excellent suggestions of plates, specials, and wines. We will return!
I've never had a bad meal here—and the wine list if fabulous! And—what makes it exceptional in the Boston area—the servers are knowledgeable and very professional.
This is our new best dining in Cambridge.
Had a fabulous meal, and a wonderful French wine. The waitstaff was very knowledgeable
Limited selection of overpriced food, no ambiance. Good service though.
First time at Shepard, loved the food. wine pour was a little skimpy, other than that no complaints.
Love the restaurant, the food, the vibe and the overall ambiance. Such a special place.
A Neighborhood Gem
Shepard keeps upping its game and has become one of our favorite spots in Cambridge. The menu is innovative without being fussy; the cocktails are reliably delicious; and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Do not miss the French fries -- they are five star!
It was amazing. Every dish we had was better than the one before from appetizers to main course to dessert. Bonus... the best French fries I have ever had.
Food and service is fantastic. The summer vegetable salad was imaginative as were the other dishes. Menu is always changing, and if possible, always getting better.
Creative and delicious food. Fantastic drinks. The waiter was helpful, service excellent. We'll return!
Special french ambiance and fresh clean food in a modern spare beautiful setting .. on a quiet street in Cambridge but it could be Paris!! Oohhh lala
Overpriced for what you get, which is just medium quality food. The best thing? The Aperol Spritzes we had.
It was my first time at Shepard and I absolutely loved it. Went for their champagne and French fries promo and was so impressed with the prices and quality. We also got a few plates to share and loved how many veggie options were available. Will definitely be back.
This was our third time eating here. We love this place!
We ate dinner there and the food was delicious and the portions not too big. I had a really delicious starter - the pate and mushrooms, and the main of scallops and shrimp was also fabulous. The French white wine was excellent, and from a part of France we know well. We sat in a booth so we heard each other well, but also the restaurant doesn't play music so it is much quieter than most places. Our waiter was hard to understand and not always available when we needed him, but on my previous visit to Shepards, the service was fine. I am so glad to have such a good restaurant in the neighbourhood, and highly recommend it.
Almost every element of the meal was excellent and cooked with finesse. I did think a duck main course was a little tough and lacking in duck flavor, though surrounded in redeeming sides. All four of us thought the meal exceptional. It was our first time in Shepard, having enjoyed its predecessor over the decades earlier. Without Harvard in session, the noise level was modest, the service perfect.
