Food and service were perfect! Brunch menu is on point
Casual restaurant with booths and tables in warm decor. Food mostly South African, but there are American standards also. We ordered one meat dish and a vegetarian special, and we loved both. Service very attentive with a manager checking with us during and after the meal.
Table was ready when we arrived and server did a fine job of getting our food and drinks. Food was fine although one entree was a bit over salted. We were in a hurry to get to a concert and staff made sure we made it. Nice to have this type of menu.
The only downside is we were seated directly behind the hostess stand with nothing but a faux wall blocking us. When there were clearly other tables in the dining area open and more comfortably arranged. But the quality of the food help offset our feelings on seating location. Overall we know we will be returning for another special dinner.
Amazing food and great service! I had the salmon, can't wait to go back and try the Shepherd's pie.
At our table we had the ground nut stew, the Durban chicken, the peri peri shrimp, and a Stellenbosch red wine. Everything was delicious, and the service was pleasant and efficient.
We loved the lamb curry and the vegetarian stew (african stew). Both were delicious but we'd have to say the vegetarian african stew was tops, tasty, along with the yellow rice, which had the best flavors. We had a great bottle of wine to go with everything and the brownie sundae to complete valentines day dinner.
Waitress was terrific. She noted that while I ordered the yellow rice the plate came with white (before I said anything) and then brought what I ordered! Terrific service.
2nd time here, but the food was significantly better than the last time. I ordered one of their classic African meals & it was very tasty and flavorful. Our waiter was very nice. Food portions were just a bit small for the price.
The food was excellent. I highly recommend the squash soup and lamb shank.
Fantastic! Food was very flavorful, and everything was cooked to perfection!
The Shebeen is a true gem of Charlottesville. The food is delectable and the staff is always so friendly. I had never had Southern African cuisine before eating at the Shebeen, but now it's always at the top of my list when recommending to others. There's something for everyone on the menu, even if you were unfamiliar with the style of food like I was. The drink selection is also extensive and well-priced.
Excellent happy hour! Very friendly crowd and discount drinks and appetizers! The Peri Peri Wings excellent but will have yours lips tingling....hot spice! Enjoyed the calamari and Samosas too! House wins were good too! Great service and friendly staff!
Our dinner reservation was for 6:30. We received a text message and a email reminder about our reservation. When we arrived at Shebeen the restaurant was closed!! If 2 reminders could be sent about the reservation why was there no notification sent that the restaurant was closed for some reason? We had walked from our hotel and it was bitter cold out.
Service was terrible even though there were very few diners. Food was OK but not great.
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. First time going and definitely won’t be the last.
Very pleasant, casual environment. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was good. Had the polenta cakes which were very good
Did not honor OpenTable reservation and turned us away . Said they didn't mean to take any reservations that day. Definitely call first.
I absolutely love this restaurant. I visit every time I come see my sister who lives outside Charlottesville.
Everything is delicious!
Food quality and prep was superb. Poor waitress service...even forgot to bring bowl of chowder. If you are ordering wine by glass be sure to ask to see bottle and even taste before committing $15/glass. Our wine was spoiled but we did not make a scene about it. Great decor. Would go back for food. Exciting menu choices.
You gotta go here! The food is delicious, perfectly spiced and the flavors are well balanced. C’ville gets unique dishes that really sing. Don’t miss this gem, especially the lamb entrees. Nicer still, the service is equal to the offerings.
Enjoyed the food and service. Close to eating back in South Africa
I made this reservation for brunch a month in advance. The Shebeen is by far my favorite restaurant in Charlottesville and I was excited to bring a group of my friends who were visiting from out of town. Our waiter ignored us, it took 45 minutes to get water, every food order was wrong or forgotten. The experience was terrible. The manager was apologetic and comp'ed our entire ticket. For that reason, I will come back to the Shebeen but I would never bring a group of friends or family again.
We have been going to this restaurant for years, but this time (and the last time) was very disappointing. The waiter had no personality, did not recognize or care this was a special occasion, and did not seem to care about our feedback on how they changed on of our favorite dinners, Sosatie. The meat was tough and we had to ask for the mango chutney and yogurt to go with the meal. Not sure if we will go back again which is too bad, since this was one of our top restaurants in Charlottesville.
We were there for a Sunday Brunch, and it wasn't terribly crowded but took over 50 minutes to get our food - and then one of the meals (eggs) was cold. The waitress was fine, the atmosphere nice, but the wait when so many tables were empty was disappointing.
Four items requested from the menu where not available-2 signature drinks, one beer type and a bottle of wine. Wine service was none existent- bottle opened and plunked on table. 3 of my 5 guests could not finish (barely began) their meals. Waiter could have cared less about our concerns. I had to apologize to my guests for the service and food. Very embarrassing. To top it all off was the mandatory tip for parties of six or more. No wonder he didn't care. This was very unfortunate as the two prior times I was there it was very good. I will not be dining there again.
Shebeen is a restaurant I like to frequent when in Charlottesville. Service has always been good & the food delicious. I need to branch out and try some other items on the menu but once I found the Sadza Cakes I can’t seem to stop ordering them as they are delicious!! Highly recommend you give this gem a try.
Veggie options are excellent. Favorite is the Sadsa Cakes but the West African Ground Nut Stew is also delicious. Meat eaters in our party were well satisfied.
What a unique find. We bumped into this restaurant while visiting Charlottesville for a couple of days and were so excited to revisit the cuisine that we had experienced in Southern Africa almost a year ago! The food was excellent, the wine list of South African wines was excellent, the ambiance of the restaurant was very evocative of a South African Shebeen, while not trying to completely duplicate a shebeen.
Great breakfast/brunch before the UVA football game!
Great find in Charlottesville! Everything we ordered was delicious, if you like lamb, I would recommend any of those dishes - fall of the bone delicious!
Interesting menu and really good food. A great choice for adventurous diners in search of a change. A real bargain during Restaurant Week, too!
Went for restaurant week with a group of six others, and we all loved our food. Service could have been slightly faster, but the food is always excellent and flavorful. Shebeen's atmosphere really transports you to another place, as does the food!
I once loved this restaurant and dined there often. But I've now had four bad experiences there, all for different reasons, and so this was my last visit. I'd never bother going back- too many other good places in town.
This restaurant continues to be our favorite. We bring out of town guests here. Took advantage of Charlottesville Restaurant Week to return to dine. The menu was fine, but because there were three courses, each of the courses were smaller. It was all tasty.
You'll like learning about new dishes..glad to discover two tasty vegetarian entrees.
The food here is plentiful and tasty. Build your own Bloody Mary is really fun and delicious and inexpensive. I had the chicken special that was spicy but very good. The food is great and the bill is painless.
Tasty experience...the waiter was very knowledgeable and gave great suggestions. Love the decor and cozy dining room, lots of outdoor seating. Comfortably busy for a Monday evening.
This is not my favorite place because things are too spicy for me. My daughter from Atlanta loves it so we eat here when she comes. She took part of her Peri Peri Chicken home and the next day when she started cutting it up she discovered it was not done. That upset her so maybe we can go somewhere else the next time she comes.
Quality restaurant. Dependable for good food.
Our meal was OUTSTANDING! We ate here while visiting Charlottesville for our anniversary and my husband and I could not stop talking about how good both of our meals were. We had the Shepherd's Pie and the Sosatie and both were so flavorful. The portions were pretty good size, we wanted to order more food just to keep trying different dishes but we were both so full. We will definitely come back when we visit Charlottesville again!
