Shebeen Pub and Braai
They easily accommodated our large party, but service was bad. We were not attended to for most of the time we were there. The staff remediated this by taking our beverages off the check. The food was great, as always.
Always a great brunch experience! Great food and service and drinks!
We've been to Shebeen's many times both were quite good. Portions are large so we skipped having dessert. Cocktails are also good & at reasonable prices. The restaurant features South African cuisine & we recommend it.
Great flavors. Lamb served perfectly. Unique and delish.
Great dinner! Noisy, however. Sounds bounce in (on) wood floors. Many families last Saturday
Food here is excellent. Bartender was great but once we got to the table service dropped off dramatically. Just got excuses when we did see the server. Fortunately manager came by and asked out understanding that server was new
Forgot salads. Server was absent. Calamari over cooked. Food undercooked.
Food was great. Would like to see some lunchy like things on the Sunday Brunch menu
This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Charlottesville for years. That changed tonight. I have noticed my last few times there that business seemed to be falling off, but my meals were always exceptional. Tonight I ended up with a piece of a plastic bag in my mouth - it had been in my vegetables. Don't know where it came from or how it got there. Needless to say, I probably won't be back for some time. The server was appropriately apologetic, and he comped my entire meal - which I certainly appreciated. That is to their credit.
We always enjoy Shebeen. The sides are soooo good, especially the mealie pap and the vegetables are always delicious. My peri peri shrimp was especially spicy this time, or I was especially sensitive, but there are plenty of non-spicy options, too.
Only saw my waitress to take my order, kind of disappointing. Food wasn’t as great as it has been.
Pro: I liked the South African wine options, and the glass I got was yummy. The back patio would have been nice if there weren’t two extremely loud tables next to ours. Our server was nice and attentive.
Con: Went for brunch, which was apparently a mistake; the menu at this supposedly South African restaurant features 0 South African dishes. Very confusing. Food was basic and bland, nothing interesting. Maybe lunch and dinner are better.
We all (3) got very different entrees, rack of lamb, salmon, & a vegetarian combo. All were delicious! the calamari appetizer was great too. Waiter recommended excellent red wine to enjoy that was available by the glass. We will definitely be back to this gem!
We’ve dined at Shebeen several times and have always had an excellent meal, plus they have a nice wine list and friendly staff.
The food was very good, however, the ceiling tiles about our table had water stains and black mold. If the recent rains caused a leak, they should not have used that tableuntil the issue was corrected.
Great food, great service!
Food always good. Service was attentive
Disappointed they took Steak Pie off the menu
Interesting and different flavors with an authentic African theme
Great food, good service, and excellent mimosa selection. What more can can you want?
Good all the way around
Lower rating because we were there for a special occasion and had a reservation. We were seated by ourselves in a secondary room which was not as nice as the main dining room. Waitress was lovely, but the ambience was spoiled. Left disappointed.
Shebeen always has delicious fresh food and a friendly atmosphere. The cuisine is not typical (I mean how many how many South African places have you eaten at?) but there is something for everyone. The service is consistently good and the ambiance is warm and down to earth. I do not recommend it for smaller children because it is a quiet atmosphere and the menu is not your typical chicken strips and mac n' cheese place. It really is a Neighborhood Gem. The location is a bit tricky with a small parking lot and it is cushioned between McDonald's and Staples.
Enjoyed the meal, except for the taking away the bread service. I ordered the corn chowder appetizer. No crackers or bread. My guests didn't order appetizers, so they had to wait 20 minutes for their entrees to arrive. Bread would have been nice to have while waiting for their entrees.
Great restaurant for a girls' brunch! The food was great - each of us got very different items and we were all pleased. They always have interesting items (unique omelettes, shrimp and grits) alongside classic favorites like blueberry pancakes and sausage gravy with biscuits. Something for everyone and a lovely atmosphere on the covered patio!
We travel and hour and a half to dine here. Always a delightful way to spend time with a love one. Outstanding in every way.
My meal was not to my expectation, I shared this with our waitress, I literally took 3 bites, I did not want a replacement, and to my surprise there was no adjustment to our bill. I saw the waitress speak to a gentleman, his facial expression was displeased, which speaks to why there was no adjustment. It’s not about the money, it’s about the guest experience, and ensuring the guest feels they’re taken care of.
Great experience dining with a large, disorganized group for a bachelorette party. We were able to use the private back room and had a great time.
The food was amazing, the waitress was super nice but rarely at our table. Once we ordered the next time she came over was when our food came our. But the restaurant was really cool and the food was awesome. We first ordered the sampler for appetizers which was brilliant on our behalf. Everything was delicious and it was fun to taste each appetizer which the different sauces. I got the lamb curry potjie and my husband got the Sosatie lamb as entrees. We love lots of bold flavors and spices and these didn't disappoint. There was a nice balance of spice and sweetness with both dishes but uniquely different flavors. The curry was AMAZING, the flavors of the sauce were unique and paired great with the rice. I would be happy just eating the sauce and rice all night 🤣 Would definitely recommend if you like flavors, if you tend to like blander food this isn't the place for you ... at least not from our experience.
We’ve been to Shebeen many times and this was definitely our best experience ever! We arrived a couple minutes early and escorted by the friendly hostess to a very nice private booth. All the tables are nice but the booths are quieter and more private. My wife had the Sosatje and I had the rack of lamb. Both dishes were superb and prepared exquisitely. I had a question about the choice of South African rose wines and our waitress promptly ask the bartender for an answer. We loved the one he suggested. We’ll definitely put Shebeen back near the top of our list of favorite restaurants in Charlottesville!
Awesome! There was a live band out on the patio which we hadn’t know about previous and had such a great time! Food and drinks were awesome then could sit on the patio for the end of the show after dinner. Also the bar swing seats were so cool! Definitely coming back.
Interesting if you want to experience South African flavors. Service was a bit haphazard, especially with a light lunch crowd, but we were intrigued by the menu.
Our first time did NOT disappoint. We're a hard crowd to please. Two super-foodies and the remaining three were all pleased with their choices.
This is a must visit restaurant when visiting Charlottesville, VA. We went for Saturday Brunch and it was outstanding. Very comfortable outdoor seating with a great atmosphere. Highly recommend.
This visit was my 4th. I brought colleagues for dinner this week. Our server was patient and kind, as the five others had many questions about the ingredients, flavors. The portions were plentiful, flavorful and a good value for the price. We'll certainly returning the next time we're all meeting in Charlottesville.
The meal was fine but the service was lacking. The hostess was rather cold and impersonal and seemed inconvenient by the fact that I asked her for something when I couldn't find the waitress. The waitress was nice but inattentive. The decor was boring and the food was very expensive.
We all enjoyed our cocktails, appetizer, and meals. Great fun. The waiter was very attentive. I had the fish and chips, wife had...shepard's pie, and son had peri peri chicken. All were tasty.
Food was great as it always is after coming here multiple times. The waitstaff tends to be rude and abrupt . I entered the facility a few minutes before my 10am reservation and I was told they were not open yet though the door was open and I had a reservation. The hostess was rude and dismissive and I felt very unwelcome. Someone else came along and seated us and was much nicer. Because the food is so good we did not leave but it would be nice to feel a little more like a customer and not an inconvenience.
Excellent food & spicy, well seasoned dishes. Loved the desserts as well.
Excellent food. Very attentive wait staff
