Shebeen Pub and Braai Ratings and Reviews
I made this reservation for brunch a month in advance. The Shebeen is by far my favorite restaurant in Charlottesville and I was excited to bring a group of my friends who were visiting from out of town. Our waiter ignored us, it took 45 minutes to get water, every food order was wrong or forgotten. The experience was terrible. The manager was apologetic and comp'ed our entire ticket. For that reason, I will come back to the Shebeen but I would never bring a group of friends or family again.
We have been going to this restaurant for years, but this time (and the last time) was very disappointing. The waiter had no personality, did not recognize or care this was a special occasion, and did not seem to care about our feedback on how they changed on of our favorite dinners, Sosatie. The meat was tough and we had to ask for the mango chutney and yogurt to go with the meal. Not sure if we will go back again which is too bad, since this was one of our top restaurants in Charlottesville.
We were there for a Sunday Brunch, and it wasn't terribly crowded but took over 50 minutes to get our food - and then one of the meals (eggs) was cold. The waitress was fine, the atmosphere nice, but the wait when so many tables were empty was disappointing.
Four items requested from the menu where not available-2 signature drinks, one beer type and a bottle of wine. Wine service was none existent- bottle opened and plunked on table. 3 of my 5 guests could not finish (barely began) their meals. Waiter could have cared less about our concerns. I had to apologize to my guests for the service and food. Very embarrassing. To top it all off was the mandatory tip for parties of six or more. No wonder he didn't care. This was very unfortunate as the two prior times I was there it was very good. I will not be dining there again.
Shebeen is a restaurant I like to frequent when in Charlottesville. Service has always been good & the food delicious. I need to branch out and try some other items on the menu but once I found the Sadza Cakes I can’t seem to stop ordering them as they are delicious!! Highly recommend you give this gem a try.
What a unique find. We bumped into this restaurant while visiting Charlottesville for a couple of days and were so excited to revisit the cuisine that we had experienced in Southern Africa almost a year ago! The food was excellent, the wine list of South African wines was excellent, the ambiance of the restaurant was very evocative of a South African Shebeen, while not trying to completely duplicate a shebeen.
This restaurant continues to be our favorite. We bring out of town guests here. Took advantage of Charlottesville Restaurant Week to return to dine. The menu was fine, but because there were three courses, each of the courses were smaller. It was all tasty.
This is not my favorite place because things are too spicy for me. My daughter from Atlanta loves it so we eat here when she comes. She took part of her Peri Peri Chicken home and the next day when she started cutting it up she discovered it was not done. That upset her so maybe we can go somewhere else the next time she comes.
Our meal was OUTSTANDING! We ate here while visiting Charlottesville for our anniversary and my husband and I could not stop talking about how good both of our meals were. We had the Shepherd's Pie and the Sosatie and both were so flavorful. The portions were pretty good size, we wanted to order more food just to keep trying different dishes but we were both so full. We will definitely come back when we visit Charlottesville again!
Super size servings which was fine, but hostess could have warned me about that. Ordered a salad with calamari and it had to be about 2 cups of DEEP DEEP Fried calamari. It was too greasy for me.
Entree was the peri peri shrimp. Very tasty. The side of veggies that came with it though were not good and were overcooked in lots of oil.
This is just a great restaurant for any type of gathering. A truly unique menu, upscale but casual, and reasonably priced compared to other places in town. We've been in Charlottesville only a year and a half but have made it to most of the better restaurants in town and this is our favorite.
