Shearns Seafood and Prime Steaks Ratings and Reviews
Restaurant Week in Galveston is not to be missed. Our group of 11, who love good food, travel together and live in Galveston, would never miss the opportunity to dine at Shearn's at the Moody Gardens Hotel.
Yes, the views are fabulous, whether day or night, and the service and food is excellent. Never let the thought of a hotel restaurant be a deterrent. Shearn's is a "must" go to place. Classy, elegant but not pretentious. A nice variety to choose from for even the pickiest eater.
We all have dines at some wonderful restaurants worldwide and Shearn's is right there at the top.
This is fine dining. The service is first class. The view from the 9th floor of Moody Gardens Hotel is excellent.Steak was perfect as was the wine. There are a couple of restaurants in Galveston that have matching service and food but packed dining rooms, but the view and the space between tables at Shearn's makes you feel like you are the only people in the room.
We came here for restaurant week. Two of us ordered the short ribs and they were fabulous. However two of us ordered the grouper fish and it was so over done and dry we were unable to eat it. They did not offer to comp us or replace the meal even after we reported that the fish was too dry to eat. Will never order fish here again.
Food is very good and so is the service. However, if you are staying at the hotel, DO NOT charge the bill to the hotel, they do a VERY POOR job of keeping track of charges to your credit card. I stayed in November and in December at the hotel and I am still trying to reconcile the charges they made to my credit card and the actual charges I made. They just charge your credit card for anything AFTER you have checked out and sign the final bill.
Shearns is a special treat in Galveston. It's the most elegant dining spot on the island, so it's perfect for special occasions. On the top floor of Moody Gardens, you are treated to some pretty special views as well.
Food was delicious, waitstaff very courteous, and as we were there on an evening just before Christmas, the dining area was magical.
I had snapper picatta, a special...was very
good...the fish was fresh and nicely cooked...
I would have preferred a little more sauce...
my girlfriend, a vegetarian, asked our waiter about
a dish called the "Vegetable Stack"....the waiter was
not familiar with it...that should have been a tip-off...
she ordered it anyway...small little tower of veggies topped
with mozzarella and bathed in a reddish, Italian sauce...
didn't look or taste great to me..she ate it reluctantly...
on the other hand, we split some mac and cheese...truly
some of the best I've had...gooey white cheddar sauce
baked to perfection...yumm...cream brulee was very
nice for dessert...not as expensive as comparable Houston
restaurants...I personally wish they'd do away with the
tuxedos for the waiters...too dated....the waiters are young
and deserve a uniform that is more trendy...ambiance is
great with water view...
Went for anniversary. Disappointed that the only thing they did for our anniversary was sit us in a quiet corner. My pork chop was tough. Portions on the plate besides meat are small, must buy sides even if it lists other vegetables with meat. Didn't have the right sodas for us, didn't have sangria so we ended up drinking water. Had an hr and half for dinner before we needed to leave for our next activity. Took an hour to get our meal so we had to hurry through it and then had to leave. We would have stayed for dessert but didn't have time. We did tell the waiter in advance. The bread was really good. My husband's filet was great he said. The mac and cheese was really good also. I have had restaurants bring us a glass of champagne, print a special menu with our name on it, give us a dessert or Hors d'oeuvre to share. This place did nothing. Doubt we will go back.
Thanksgiving 2017 for us here was beyond our expectations! We are world foodie travelers from Queen Creek, AZ.I have to say thier filet with foie gras on top was the best steak me and my wife had ever had! All of the staff was top notch including our waiter Damian. Not to mention the view was great! Also their Lobster Bisque was another best in my life, I would love to go back and literary drink it for dinner! We shared the cheesecake for dessert and again amazing! I loved every minute of our experience, and our Thanksgiving was one we'll never forget! Pro tip: If you like escargot get it here! Also if we ever got the chance to come back we would plan on having drinks either before or after dinner at the bar/lounge the on other side of Restaurant. The view from that side is that of Moody Gardens Pyramids. Very posh Ambiance!
We had just come off of a long day on the road and started searching for a great steak and seafood restaurant to have a nice quite dinner. Found Shearns online and took a chance since we are not from this area ! We have dined in some great steak houses in Boston and Worcester Ma . Our waiter Michael was the best we have ever had, the food was over the top great. All the staff were excellent and we could not of had a better evening for food and atmosphere. I will put it this way , if you never dine at Shearns you are missing the best dining experience . Thanks Michael for a great evening!
First time visit: Great view, imaginative menu and great wine by the glass list. Lobster risotto with corn (side dish) was delicious, amuse bouche before meal and palate cleansers between courses were a bonus. A very pleasant surprise to discover this level of fine dining on our little island.
My wife and I were staying at the hotel and wanted to have a nice dinner. The reviews were decent so we gave Shearns a try. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Wine list was a little disappointing but they had something for every price range. Escargot was good and we both ordered the surf and turf. The steak was excellent and prepared as we asked. The lobster tail was overdone and tough. Overall the restaurant was good. The hotel calls it "fine dining" so I guess I was expecting more.
Micheal, our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu even went as far as telling us about the special of the day. Both my wife and myself got the prime rib with the lump crabmeat which by the way was delicious. Michael was very attentive & polite as well. Hope to come back soon.
