Went for Sunday brunch, nice relaxed spot, with character. Offers live music during the week which seems cool. Big space, decent layout. Food was great, substantial portions, good bottomless mimosas.
The service was rather slow, and the food was OK. The honest reason for the above average rating was the unlimited mimosas. I wouldn't return necessarily, but I don't regret trying a new place.
The door was wide open on Sunday and it was almost as hot inside as it was inside. Food was great as usual
The food was to be expected for bar food, but with better and more creative options. Had the food come out hot it would be been rated better. The main reason for the low score was the poor service. The servers we inattentive a not friendly.
We had a great brunch at Shaw's Tavern. The food was great, the service mediocre at best. We sat on the porch and had a fun birthday celebration. The ambiance was nice- everyone was having a good time. Having worked in restaurants for long time, I pay attention for small details and noticed that several were nothing special or not well-thought out. Not that those details should stop you from going! Highly recommend. Food was top-notch.
Everything was fantastic! Live music was awesome, crowd was energetic, service was attentive despite a healthy crowd, and the food was excellent. (Though I would have liked a little less salt and a little more heat in the jambalaya risotto!)
I just love the Chicken and Waffles!! Their Waffles are amazing! Cornbread Waffles yummy delicious!! The bacon syrup actually has chunks of bacon in it!! Topped with 2 big pieces of fried chicken!!!!! Love the people and the atmosphere!!! One of my favorite places to go!
The Brunch menu is different and delicious. We were a part of 5, so we each tried different dishes and everyone really enjoyed their selection. The waitress was extremely helpful and explained the different dishes. A member of our party wanted to try Biscuits with lamb gravy, so she arrange for a small plate. The Brunch was relaxing and not rushed and we really enjoyed the outside side walk dining.
The food is ok for brunch however the service is bad. I've had brunch there a bunch of times and the servers have no personality or emotion, never checks on the table and ignores us the whole time. I had to keep reminding them to refill our drinks. And this is every time I go and with each server I had.
Went for brunch. The chicken and waffles was really good, the waffle is a cornbread waffle. Cool atmosphere and not too crowded when we got there at noon.
Went here for a brunch meeting and had a blast! I am a complete foodie and really love great restaurants that have great service, a great menu, and that do things differently in their dishes. At Shaw's Tavern you get just that.
This quaint find, you wouldn't really notice because of it's location away from the major restaurants that are within the U Street Corridor, but let me say that this is one of the best brunches I have been too. The best thing about it is that the menu is so broad, yet concise, and the food is extravagant.
I will definitely add this to my list of brunch places to go for the future.
I like this local spot--good solid pub food, and good beers. It was a lovely meal for a cold winter night.
This is our go to spot for brunch with a large group of friends. Good food, service and lots of mimosas.
Overall this was just okay. A small step up in service would make all the difference. The waitstaff was not friendly or helpful, and they overbooked our table so there were people glaring at us while we quickly tried to finish our meals. There are definitely better places in DC for a good brunch.
I like Shaw's Tavern - always have. I find their drink selection (cocktails too) to be great.
Generally, I enjoyed my brunch. I do think that my grits could've been a little less watery. Beyond that, great brunch and they were willing to leave out onions and peppers at my request (i hate both).
The mimosas could've probably used a little more kick (I drank 5 and didn't feel a buzz).
It was really cold outside, so it felt a little cool near the windows. Tolerable, but not perfect.
Service was good, as wait staff were nearly tripping over themselves to check on our table.
Keep up the good work
The food was tasty but not very hot, and the entire restaurant www cold! We wore our jackets the entire time, and saying something at the hostess desk did nothing. Next time I'll ask for a table far from the windowed perimeter! Otherwise the experience was fine.
Great spot right around the corner from us. Really cozy, great bar, awesome atmosphere. We'll definitely be going back.
My friend and I went to Shaw's for a late brunch and comedy show. The prices are a bit high but the food was good. My friend ordered garlic bread to start (really a good size pizza!) and her main dish was biscuits and gravy. She really liked her choices. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered two sides (2 eggs scrambled and bacon). Nothing special but it definitely hit the spot. The main reason we were there though was for the stand up comedy show upstairs. A hidden gem, the comedy show was from about 3-4:30 and really great for an amateur show. Make sure to come early to get your food because the servers don't come around once the show starts. Can't wait to go for round two!
I come here often because the food is consistently tasty and the service consistently good. This trip was no exception, as my party and I spent no less than three hours at our table and felt well taken care of the entire time. Can't wait until my next trip!
Food was good pub food. This place is in our neighborhood, so we'll probably be back the next time we need a little comfort food. The restaurant has a couple of TVs and excited sports fans, as you would expect at a sports bar. However, the ambiance is trendier and more comfortable, making it still a decent place for non-sports fans to go for a nice dinner.
This place is a cozy neighborhood gem. Delicious bites and friendly service.
We sat down with a reservation of 10. The restaurant was moderately busy but not overwhelmingly. They were clearly understaffed and only half our party got drinks. We sat for nearly an hour without getting service. We approached the waiter and told him it'd been nearly an hour and if he'd take our order. He said he'd probably not get to us for another 10-15 minutes because other tables were more pressing despite the fact we came in before them. We left without ordering after that.
Fantastic food. We ordered the calamari, and I had grilled cheese as I was craving comfort food, prior to kicking off New Years resolutions. The food was great, I enjoyed a very nice glass of wine, and my friend's blueberry cocktail was very refreshing. The only downside was the staff. Considering there was hardly anyone else there as it was December 26th, I was a bit miffed to stand in the doorway for an awkward period until I finally went up to the bartender and two staffers milling around. Then when it was time to pay, after the meal we couldn't find our waiter. Staff distraction was the only downside to an otherwise great meal.
Hosted my birthday brunch here with a party of 18 people. Service was wonderful, mimosas were strong, and good choice of food. I'll definitely be back!
Other reviewers had complained about the service - even when it wasn't busy -- but our experience on a slow Sunday evening was good. Though they were out of a first choice -- catfish -- the food was tasty and served hot. Fired calamari and french fries done just right, juicy burger and pretty good blue cheese salad. Sadly, Sunday night is the only night of the week where they don't have their great happy hour specials. At an earlier visit during happy hour we had a terrific server, $2 off draft beers, and a sizable appetizer of piping hot hush puppies.
It was very hot inside and the waiter was not particularly attentive, but the food was great.
Went here for Sunday brunch with two friends. We got the bottomless mimosas which were well worth it. Our waiter was extremely attentive, never leaving our glass less than half full. The food as also incredible: brunch pizza, pumpkin french toast and fried chicken and waffles.
I'll definitely be back!
Great food and very friendly wait staff. Definitely will be coming back here!
This place exceeded expectations. The brunch offerings were great and the ambiance was also on point. Only down side: the prices are too high - $14 for a salad and added chicken is $6 and shrimp is $9?? Nope.
Great food options with something for any time of the day or whatever you have a taste for. Delicious cocktails that seem to compliment the menu perfectly with an nice notable wine and beer list. There is an awesome ambiance that made the dining experience extremely comfortable and yet intimate. I enjoyed the high level of customer service from the moment I walked in. Charismatic and knowledgeable staff that will leave you smiling throughout the experience.
I went for the Saturday standup. Our waiter was not enthusiastic at all. First I ordered chicken and waffles, but they ran out. So I got a brunch pizza. I asked the waiter if it was good, and he said "if you like eggs." My friend ordered grapefruit brulee and asked if it was any good, the waiter said "I've never had it. It just looks like fruit." We ended up ordering and were pretty impressed with the food, so we asked where the standup was. He said it was upstairs, but he told us "don't come for the comedy. At least I hear people laughing today." ...Not impressed with this negative nancy.
My favorite place to stop before or after a show at 930 Club or DC9 or Velvet Lounge or Howard Theater or Axum Lounge. Great beer selection and delicious food offerings. I made a reservation for 930pm, we arrived about 20 minutes early because the show we saw let out early and they were still able to seat us. Service was a little slow mainly because the place was really busy (not a complaint at all!). Server did immediately notice the wrong item was brought out and fixed it up lickity-split.
Food was pretty good, but the service left a lot to be desired. I will go back, but would definitely change servers if I got that same waitress again.
Nice food, good service. Neighbourhood bar and grill
Great veggie plate! Good list of draft beers too. We were a little chilly because the front door was propped open. Other than that I highly recommend!
Not only was the food great, but our waiter really made a difference to our dining experience. He was friendly, attentive (not too attentive!) and overall a great person. Loved it!
In a city like DC where everyone loves a good brunch, I was surprised at how just okay everything was. The service was okay. Our waiter was around and busy but not as helpful and on time as we would have liked. We had to wait for about 15 min for him to take our order. The mimosas were bottomless, but they came in these small thing glasses, requiring lots of refills, which were difficult to get because our waiter was often MIA. The food was just okay. I had the red velvet french toast. I have had them done better with more fineness. Here they just dragged bread through red velvet cake batter and fried them. I'd give them a second shot because as I said, nothing was terrible. Nothing was great either.
My boyfriend and I went for dinner on a Friday! The music was beautiful!
Great deviled eggs, chicken salad sandwich with crisp bacon and great bun.
Rude bar tender, slow service, no one wanted to be helpful
The food we ordered was great, except that they messed up 4 out of 4 dinners. The waiter never came to check if everything was OK, but we were able to flag a busboy a few minutes after.
My friend with a severe gluten allergy ordered the jambalaya, which said ‘gluten-free’ on the menu. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE ACTUALLY GLUTEN-FREE. There was a piece of deep-fried chicken on top. When we asked the waiter about it, he acted like we were bothering him by asking if that was in-fact breaded, fried chicken. His answer was “I don’t know…probably.” No one ever even apologized for that extremely dangerous mistake.
