A lot of changes since they first started the Buffet a few years back. The good thing they now bring crab to your table hot, the down side the variety of food has dropped or you need to ask them to bring it out for you. However the price has increased almost 40% the value is not what it once was.
Have been to the Shaw's Crab Buffet several times, but unfortunately this experience has tarnished all the others. From the hostess placing blame on us for not coming back to her for when our table was ready (waiting for an additional 20 minutes) to an extended period of time waiting on napkins while our food sat there getting cold. Having our crab legs delivered right away and having to be sent back because they also were then to cold to eat when the napkins finally arrived, it was a big disappointment. The change to having to order your crab legs instead of obtaining from the buffet was also a put off. Fortunately the food quality was not less than before.
Sorry Shaw's but we were huge proponents of your buffet but your have now lost 2 supporters as we start our look elsewhere.
the value is no longer there for the grand crab seafood buffet. the price has risen, and the selection of buffet items has decreased. also, there seem to be no items in the buffet that are actually hot in temperature. the beef tenderloin is basically cold, the au gratin potatoes and the pasta are luke warm at best, and even the steamed crab is barely warm.
i went during july in the middle of shaw's lobster month, and the lobster bisque and lobster pasta barely had any hint of lobster. when i first started having the grand crab buffet there were several varieties of crab abailable. there was also lobster as part of the buffet. shaw's is still my favorite for seafood, but i will not be back for the grand crab buffet.
I have enjoyed the Grand Crab Buffet in the past but they have made some changes to it recently. The buffet options are somewhat limited now which was quite disappointing considering the increased price. I will give them kudos for handling the actual crab differently, instead of offering the crab on the buffet they now bring you out fresh steaming baskets of crab whenever you are ready. Overall the crab was fantastic as usual but the other options on the buffet were somewhat of a disappointment.
Shaw's Grand Crab Buffet was a major disappointment. I expected a variety of crabs, namely, king crab legs, dungeness crabs, stone crabs and etc. Instead, we got plates of king crab legs upon request. The king crab legs were not of good quality either. It was the skinny leg section with not much meat. I think they saved the meaty leg sections for people who ordered off the menu and charged by the pound. The buffet consisted of california rolls, parmesan chicken, slices of beef, potatoes, vegetables, pasta, soup and salad with sliver of crabmeat on top. They really expected us to fill up on the non-crab buffet items.
When I made reservations 2 months ago, the listed price was $59 per person. When I got the bill, it was $69. Server said that I got the discounted price, as I booked early, because they just raised their price to $79. This price was for food only. Drinks not included. I paid close to $300 (including tip, sodas and coffees) for party of 3.
I will never go again. Overpriced, overpriced food. Totally not worth it !
We went for the Grand Crab Buffett, the setup has changed since we were there last ( a few years ago) they now bring the crab legs to your table. Before they were all part of the buffet line. There was a couple times during the meal we were looking for our server for more and
couldn't find him, it wasn't his fault, he was spread too far amongst the tables. The food is always good, replenished up at the buffet regularly. We enjoyed ourselves very much.
I stopped here to celebrate my birthday. Overall the experience was good. The food was superb, the ambience was good but the service was not up to par. Management observed the problem immediately and rectified all issues expeditiously. It is refreshing to know that the management staff has the decency to acknowledge the issues without waiting for patrons to complain. Although my first experience was not the best, because of the professionalism that management displayed, I would still recommend Shaw's Crab House as a great place to dine.
We chose the "grand buffet" thinking by the name it was something special. Small upstairs dining room with simple tables and decor. The food was good but crab and tenderloin were served a few pieces at a time but you could go back for more.
Our bill was just under $200 (with gratuity) for two people and only one glass of wine.

We have been to Shaw's many times. We tried the Crab Buffet for the first time on advise of a co-worker. The offering were diverse and plentiful. I am an oyster fan and they had west coast and gulf oysters. The sushi rolls were good. The crab was big, grinded to split and very tasty. Everything was great. Other reviews question the price? I think it was a good value. If I were to order the same items off the menu downstairs it would cost me twice as much. Deserts were great too!!
Open table listed Crab buffet price at $50 per person. Lettuce Entertain you restaurant site lists it at $59 (didn't see that till after we were there). THE ACTUAL PRICE - that we didn't see until we got the bill was $69 per person! The next morning I searched all over Shaw's Crab house web site - no prices listed for anything. Then went to Lettuce Entertain you site where I found the price listed as $59. I was so embarrassed after telling our friends to join us for $50 per person to get a bill that was almost $20 per peRson higher!!!!!!
The food was average. Nothing was bad but nothing was really great. The best two items for the main course were the beef tenderloin and the the oysters. That being said it is called the Grand Crab Buffet. The crab should have been the highlight. Even the other crab dishes such as as the crab cakes and the crab tarts may have been good if they weren't cold (should have been warm). They need to do a better job of either putting out smaller quantities or to have them over buffet sternos. Like other reviewers have stated I have had better snow crabs for more than half the price than these Golden King Crabs. The only other stand out were desserts. I would have no issue with the nearly $70 price tag if they served better quality crab legs (even if they went down to higher quality snow crabs over the king crab legs) and actually served the warm food warm. And although other reviewers complained about lack of choices, I don't necessarily need a lot of choices, what I do need is keeping quality high at the price point.
I would just like to preface my review with the fact that my husband and I have been visiting Shaw’s Schaumburg, and Shaw’s Chicago both the restaurant and Oyster/Sushi bars for the past 10 years and have always had a wonderful dining and service experience. I am sharing my opinion strictly as it relates to this one-time experience.
We made reservations 2 weeks in advance for the Shaw’s Grand Crab buffet. The quality of the featured crab & oysters were outstanding. Our server was prompt and attentive, and our plates were cleared very efficiently by the rest of the staff. That said, a few things did not meet the regular standards I would associate with my Shaw's experiences.
We checked in 15 minutes early, and were told to come back closer to our reservation time. We were finally allowed to go upstairs a full 15 minutes after our reservation time where there was no one standing at the reception area to greet us. We were a party of four and we were seated at a table for two. It was extremely challenging to just find space for a water glass. When we first visited the actual buffet there were no plates for anyone to use. In the awkward upstairs room, there were maybe a dozen tables total and only half of them were in use. There was more than one occasion when there was complete silence in the entire room. It wasn’t bad, it was just strange - nothing at all like all of my other experiences at Shaw's.
For the money, I wouldn't recommend this. I will be enjoying the Sunday Brunch Buffet instead in the future. You get the same quality crab and oysters, but twice the amount of choices of other (in my opinion) better quality foods to choose from. Perhaps if the Grand Crab Buffet mirrored the already very successful Sunday Brunch Buffet and hosted in a larger area of the restaurant with more fresh items and variety it would have been a better experience? Either way, I will be back at Shaw’s in the future!
The food on the buffet I would classify as average, and was not impressed. I have had a much better seafood selection at Royal Buffet. The sauces were not kept filled and had to repeatedly ask the servers for things. For the price you could go out to eat several times for better quality food.
Given the price, I would only come for a special occasion. Food was good. Liked the crab cake and the blue crab tart. The shrimp cocktail was okay and I've had better shrimp. The fried shrimp was not hot. The lobster and brie pasta was tasty and so was the lobster bisque. Wasn't a fan of the scalloped potato. The cold snow crab legs were semi frozen. The steamed king crab was good. Lots of dessert options. Liked the key lime pie, the chocolate mousse and creme bulee. Red velvet cupcake was nothing special. Wasn't a fan of the chocolate walnut cookie. Wished there was a cheesecake or fresh fruit tray. Okay for the price paid but would not go back unless for something special.
We were looking forward to this as it was our first time dining here. We waited a month to get in so our expectation was high. Unfortunately, the experience was not what I expected. We had a reservation for 7:30 for the Grand Buffet, we had to wait for 40 minutes before a table was open for us while we saw other parties being seated that had reservations after us. The hostess was kind enough to comp us a drink for the wait. Once seated, one our party members pulled out his chair to sit down to get butter all over his hand. The entire back of his chair had butter on it. He was fortunate that his hand was the only thing to get covered in butter as his clothing would have been ruined and the rest of our night been canceled. As it was near the end of the service due to us getting seated so late several items that were at the beginning of the service were no longer there. Everything was limited so someone in our party who got to experience an item while others did not. At the beginning of our service the gentleman who was cutting the meat had on gloves however I guess it did not make a difference being that he kept scratching his face and then serving food again.
Although the staff was friendly, for the price that we paid I would expect to have much better service and the quality of food to be at a better standard. Needles to say we were very disappointed. I am not sure if this was a fluke or not but it leaves me to think if we would return.
I was lookimg forward to this all month, it took awhile for a reservation to open up. Small venue which is nice located in Scaumburg. A little disappointed the were not ready at 5 and we had to wait, luckily it was worth it.
A great selection of seafood from oysters to shrimp to Alaskin king Crab. And if you want to take a break from the seafood they have steak and vegetables , if you must.
Also the desert were outstanding, a great place to go for a date or anniversary .
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. He was very pleased and loved it. We were seated very promptly. Our booth seating was excellent and private. The wait staff was very attentive. I was expecting more crab choices but the ones they offered were good. The selection of sides and appetizers was vast and the beef was delicious. And the dessert try was gorgeous. He definitely wants to come back, but the pricing would lead me to only do special occasions.
As a big fan of Shaw's I had high expectations for the Crab Buffet. Eeh, not worth about $70 pp. The fish and seafood at Shaw's is superb, this is good. The quality of the limited selections was fine, presentation fine, temperature and taste fine but nothing was great.
The servers and waitstaff were very attentive, considerate and engaging. That was the only thing superb about the restaurant. The dessert selection was very good, ample and fresh but not enough to redeem the shortcomings of the buffet.
