Shaw's Crab House - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Was sat in awkward corner both very close to 2 other tables that shared both, waitress was very friendly and helpful would have liked to have seen a dress code other quests appearance took away from experience of “fine dining” which was the impression I was given of establishment particularly price points I mean the party next to me had back packs at table and winter jackets and sweats seemed to also rush us through dinner even with it being a Sunday night and restaurant not even close to capacity then was displeased to be given sales pitch for dining point program at end of meal
Wonderful experience every time we go. This time we were not aware that they do not order off menu while buffet is going. Upon getting ready to leave because we didn’t want a buffet style meal (though it looked amazing), the manager came up to us and said he is going to start up the grill for us. Our server was amazing. What a delight. Highly recommended as always. Oh, and even the crew clearing tables had opinions on what we were eating which was great. Lots of fun.
Such an iconic Chicago restaurant! The entire atmosphere is welcoming, warm, embracing and can only encourage your entire party to enjoy the food! Literally, when you push open the ancient revolving door and ascend the narrow steps into the bar area, you are leaving today's travails in the rear view mirror. Venture back into another era. The Oyster Bar on the right is just an hors d'ouevres for the main course in the bar and main dining room on the left. Our table for five was in the bar area and was intimate, offering the perfect view of the happy customers about to munch on seafood galore. Our waitperson, Amy, was animated, precise and huge fun. We tried the Seafood platters, the Crab Bites, the flounder and creamed spinach. I will always make Shaw's a regular stop in Chicago !
Wife and I ordered crab legs. Hers were in great shape. Mine should have been on the buffet. Old, shells were rubbery, crab was overcooked and dry. Very disappointing. Service was terrible. Tried to send them back but our waiter was too focused on his 4 and 7 tops.
The service and seafood here are always exceptional. Where Shaw's has fallen down lately, are with their vegetables. Twice now, we've been sorely disappointed with a side dish. On a previous occasion, the cauliflower, which was talked up greatly by the server, was overcooked, mushy and without much in the way of flavor or seasoning. On this last occasion, the brussel sprouts were quite bitter (as in, not very fresh), over-doused with vinegar, and extremely dry. We have no issue paying a premium price for a side dish, but not if it's going to be mediocre. Stick with steamed spinach, or order a salad, if you want vegetables in your meal.
The Oysters Rockefeller rock! And so did the service. We had the oysters, gumbo and lobster bisque soups, and caesar salad with crab cake. The chef kindly split the salad for us, so we my husband and I didn't have to argue on Valentine's Day! A lovely and delicious experience all around.
Reservation was moved back due to travel issues, and the hostess was extremely accommodating. Our server was very polite and formal but somewhat stiff in explaining the menu. He did describe the shimp/lobster fettuccine to perfection. Another delicious meal at Shaw's.
I have been dining at Shaw's since the late 1980's. I love it for dinner or lunch. The seafood selection is outstanding and everything is good. It's amazing how the interior has been so well maintained. Our table ordered haddock, mahimahi, and a combination plate. I am usually skeptical about combination plates. Something is bound to be better than something else, but the shrimp, scallops and crab cake were all excellent. And we love the mini desserts - a great option.
