Shaw's Crab House - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
We had a reservation for 7:45 and came in at 7:00 and checked in. I noticed some other people who came in after us seated and checked at 7:55 to see where we were. I was told we were next and we got seated at 8:00. Restaurant was not that busy. I think they forgot about us.
I ordered King Crab legs and our salads and soups came on time. However, our main meals were a pretty long wait. When I got my $77 crab legs, they were not hot and probably had been sitting out for a while. My wife's was fine. I did not complain, because I was hungry and they were still good cool.
A little disappointed and we never ruin our night by complaining.
Usually I like Shaw's. I always have Stone Crabs for my birthday either at Shaw's or Joe's. This year instead of stone crab from the Gulf, there was stone crab from Santa Barbara. I never had Pacific stone crab before and found it to be very disappointing. If I were the chef, I wouldn't serve those. Also the service wasn't great. I'm a member of the Frequent Diner program and helped our server convince one of my friends to join the program. Unfortunately, I don't think my instructions were followed to give me the points for our dinner check which I paid for with my credit card. I think the points were given to the new account.
The side dishes we had were good - au gratin potatoes and creamed spinach. My Caesar salad was good and so were the oysters. However a combination of all of the above lead to this being less than a good experience. It will be awhile before I try it again.
I love that the restaurants we reserve through OpenTable almost always read our special requests regarding seating and accommodate us as best they can. Shaw's was no exception, and the table we and our guests were treated to was comfy and in a great location for conversation. The service and food did not disappoint, either. The only weak spot was the one little tuna tataki Nigiri that was ordered along with another appetizer; the tuna decidedly did not taste as fresh as it could have been, and the cucumber ginger sauce was not very visually appealing. Otherwise, it was a delightful experience!
I travel to Chicago once a year and I always visit Shaw's at least once during the trip. The food is always fantastic, the staff is top notch, the service is fast, professional and friendly. Shaw's has it all! I only wish there were a comparable restaurant in my hometown.
My daughter was craving crab. I have had Shaw's before but honestly we had never been there. I was hoping to sit in the dining room, but because we weren't all getting the buffet (I didn't know about the amazing buffet) we sat in the oyster bar... Regardless, the meal was amazing and the chocolate cake, always a hit!
Shaw's never fails to deliver a great dining experience. It is our go-to place for special family occasions, the impromptu drop in for dinner, and the terrific brunch buffet. Pricing is fair, food always properly cooked, with an emphasis on really fresh seafood and shellfish . Service is always friendly and professional.
Best brunch we ever had. We were celebrating a special occasion - "Appreciation Brunch" for my sisters, brothers-in-law and niece, who help us year after year, babysitting our "Twinkies" (3 year old twin grandsons )!
Atmosphere was exciting...food smelled delicious as we walked into the restaurant. Everybody had a great time and our private room was perfect. The food was amazing and the Alaskan King Crab legs were great but some were small. My favorite was the Belgium Waffles (yum!), au gratin potatoes, "Rita's eggs (wow! best scrambled eggs I ever had, fluffy and so tasty, I didn't need any seasoning. ) The oysters, shrimp and sushi were perfect. Although I was full, I had to try the desserts: the Pot de Crème and Crème Brule couldn't be missed - and Do-Rite donuts, my sisters love those donuts!! Great coffee - hot and delicious! Lobster bisque was excellent. I loved everything and want to go back again soon!!
My girlfriend & I had a great dining experience. The young woman at the hostess station was somewhat curt when we checked in for our reservation. Other than that, we had exceptional service. Our waiter was friendly & efficient. Our food was delicious. I had the Alaskan Red King Crab legs & they were scrumptious - pricey but worth it. She had the seafood sampler & loved it. We’ll be back again.
I brought a date who had not been to Shaw's. She is from Chicago, and I am from DC. I have been many times and just love the place. My date did too. Call me if the place ever considers closing - it is a landmark that should be around in 200 years like a couple of good old spots in Boston. Many thanks!
We went out to dinner before seeing Wicked on a Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated immediately in the fine dining section. We had awesome wait staff, delicious appetizers and bread, and a pretty darn good passion fruit drink. The crab and oysters were perfect. It was all so good we even had a dessert sampler with key lime pie, raspberry pie, creme brûlée and cheesecake all sooooo good we will definitely go back the next time we stay in downtown Chicago!
