If you’re craving for exquisite Chinese cuisine in the heart of downtown Chicago, I highly recommend Shanghai Terrace located at the Peninsula Hotel. The service is excellent. The wait staffs including the maître des were very attentive to our needs. The cocktail drinks were marvelous . I had the Ning Sling x2. It’s heavy on Absolut Mandarin but you’d hardly taste it due to the sweetness rendered by lychees and passion fruit. My husband had Sour Cherry Old Fashioned x2, too. Like my cocktail, they didn’t skimp on Woodford Reserve. It’s stiffer than Ning Sling actually. We had steamed pork dumplings Shanghai style. These are dumplings with soup encapsulated in the soft thin buns. I ordered Dong Po Pork Belly which is actually bacon arranged like a prism and braised in miso, Palm sugar and anise. The pork belly is so tender you could cut it with fork. It’s sweet and salty and fragrant as well. Chip ordered the Wok Fried Shredded Beef. The beef is stir fried in oyster sauce with scallions. It’s tasty and flavorful but the taste is something we’re already familiar with. It’s a safe choice to say the least. My son ordered the Three Treasures fried rice which included wagyu beef (yes, THE wagyu beef), chicken, duck, dried scallops and egg. It’s probably one of the best fried rice we ever tasted. I think the umami flavor came from the briny taste of the dried scallops. We all shared a dessert of strawberries and lavender pavlova. It’s a delicate, delightful and refreshing combination of fresh strawberries on top of a meringue sitting on a moat of lavender cream with a scoop of strawberry lavender ice cream. The flavor was clean, light and teases your taste buds for more. We ended our meal with the most fragrant jasmine tea I’ve ever had in decades. Our wait staff even gave us extra almond cookies with half almond nut on top brushed with edible gold and little dice like chocolates with runny fudge inside.

A wonderful New Year's Eve experience in all respects. While pricey, we were happy there was no fixed price menu at New Year's Eve markups. Maybe the only upscale restaurant in the neighborhood where you could order from the regular menu.

Elegant Chinese restaurant inside the Peninsula Hotel. We enjoyed a Christmas eve lunch / dinner . Small skating rink on the terrace provided people watching opportunities. Food was delicate and flavorful - pork buns and dumplings for appetizers and a variety of Cantonese and Shanghainese entrees to pick from. The hotel was dressed up for the Holidays, so the entire experience was festive and seasonal.

The service by the Chinese staff was impeccable! For us, it was certainly one of the best in the Chicago.
The cooking was a disappointment. The appetizers were passable, the desserts were good but the main courses, the Kung Pao chicken and the shredded beef were bland. None of us could finish our meal. Any hole-in-the wall Chinese restaurant in China Town or elsewhere would have served better dishes (and needless to note, at much cheaper price.)
We live in the neighborhood but will never return to this restaurant or recommend it to others.

I think it was one of the best dinners I've ever had. The Peking duck was amazing as was the braised eggplant. The dim sum appetizer was memorably good as were the specialty cocktails. The service was outstanding. It's pricey but for a special occasion it's well worth it.

Once again- this was a perfect evening with fabulous service, Devine food and a gorgeous setting- especially with the Christmas scene and skating rink. Make sure to add Dim Sum- go with a few people to share all the wonderful dishes!! Sour cherry old fashion is yummy!!!

It was my wife’s birthday, and I wanted to surprise with a new experience in dining, unfortunately it was not what I was expecting. Working in fine dining myself such as the four seasons I expected a little more.
The server forgot some items we ordered, the staff brought out food that were not ours, The food came out a bit cold. Someone did come to our table and apologize for their mistakes, and offered dessert on the house.
I was not looking for dessert on the house, I was expecting a great experience for my wife! You are rated as one on the top hotels in dining and staying are you not?
Hopefully you will correct and talk to your staff on how to make it better. The place was not busy for these types of mistakes to happen.

We were disappointed, because the quality of the food did not match the prices, with the exception of the Peking Duck, which was very good. The dim sum sampler was average, the chrysanthemum fish below that. We would not recommend this restaurant.

Great service and nice ambiance. Asian decor is very nice. Food is very good. Had the Peking duck salad, spicy prawns and sautéed prawns. All excellent. Roasted duck and medley fried rice were very good. Portions are hearty and reasonable. Cocktails also good. Generous with the alcohol. Dessert menu was not as appealing but everything else was delicious. A bit pricey but good.

Overall a wonderful experience for our anniversary celebration. The Dim Sum was amazing, and the main courses were generous portions. My Mapo Tofu was the real deal, just like what you would get in Cheng Du! The real highlight though was the staff, from the host to the servers, who were so gracious and responsive. They provided a flower arrangement for our anniversary dinner and a complimentary dessert as well. The only negative was I expected a little more quiet, intimate ambiance and it was quite noisy and energetic instead, so my wife and I had a little difficulty hearing each other speak at times. But that really did not detract from our overall experience which was great. We will definitely be back!

The Ultimate Birthday present, lunch in this atmospheric restaurant was a memorable and delicious experience. Their delectable wonton soup made everything that I previously thought was wonton soup seem woefully inadequate. The dim sum prix fixe meal was not only a carefully chosen selection of flavors, it included generous portions. The spicy duck fried rice was especially well prepared. The dessert of fresh fruit and passion fruit sorbet was refreshing and the perfect finale.

The Peninsula is a premier hotel and this world class restaurant is indicative of its quality.

We make an annual visit to Shanghai Terrace while in town for a medical conference. In the past, it was more exotic, though with genuine Shangainese cuisine. I suspect the menu is more approachable as a new strategy, which is fine. The Peking Duck was as good as I'd remembered, and the service was excellent. We got the steamed halibut, which was delicious and surprisingly buttery. My only disappointment was the appetizers. We got the Chef's Dim Sum plate, which was an assortment of dumplings, none of which was better than what one can get in your standard divy Chinese restaurant in a big city. Most had special twists with fancy bits, like roe on the shumai, but the seasoning of each of them was a little weak.

What made this uniquely Shanghai Terrace was definitely the dessert. It's rare enough to find a pavlova on the menu at any restaurant, but the lavender cream and strawberries were exquisitely done, delicate, and really top notch. I'd have returned for the consistently good entrees and service, but that dessert made this the special occasion I hoped for.

Friendly staff, attentive waiter, beautiful decor, and great food. The only con is the space is tight and when the restaurant is full the volume level is pretty high. I had to lean in to hear what my friend was saying to me. I will eat there again.

On a weekday's evening, found plenty of available time range on open table, so expected quiet dining as I had last time. But most seats were taken and very noisy. Other than that, this is one of my favorite place to have fine dining with great vegetarian menu.

My mum and I always try to return to Shanghai Terrace for dinner when we come to Chicago each time. Not having been in a year, we had dinner last evening. Having appraised Chef Mao that we were back and wanted traditional style (ie authentic), he pleased with char siew and fried kai lan. These were beautiful and well balanced. We also had the shrimp har cao and shrimp siew mai - both the fillings were nice but the skin could be made more paper thin.

Unfortunately, Max worked lunch that day and wasn't there that evening and he was missed. Christina came over to say hi and we were delighted to find her studies had progressed.

Another perfect meal at Shanghai : food service , outside seating , and excellent bartender . This place absolutely spoils you for Chinese food . I have had everything on the menu but you can't go wrong with the scallops , Chilean sea bass or the Peking duck ( yay). The dim sum, fried rice, and vegetables are outstanding . I can't stay away from this place .

Beautiful night and we were seated on their outside terrace. Vegetable dumplings were outstanding and the soup we ordered was split for us - also excellent. For main courses, my wife and I shared the Beef Tenderloin and the Scallop dish. No complaints on either dish. The service was excellent and the Sommelier made an excellent recommendation from their very extensive wine list. A great restaurant in Chicago and one we will return to again.
