Shanghai Terrace is always a great dining experience and doubly so during the holidays, when the Peninsula Hotel is tastefully decorated. Dim sum is brilliant as an appetizer here, this time I chose the Lobster with dark truffle dumplings while my companion went for her favorite duck fois gras dumplings. In the quest for something new on New Year's Day, I opted for Chilean Sea Bass Szechuan which came with the fish encrusted in a seared layer of the famous hot sauce. Every time, the food and the team step up for a great experience and lived up to their reputation again! All the best!
We were told how excellent this restaurant was so we tried it. It was just OK not memorable. The menu is fine but I’ve never had a Chinese entree that was void of vegetables. Very odd.
Superb food. Meal marred by delayed service for each course. Wait staff was very pleasant, but it just took a long time for them to appear. We will go again because the food is excellent, but our anticipation will be somewhat muted because of the inferior service.
All of the above ... As always everything was first class!
We had a great meal and would love to return for lunch dim sum. Try a saketini!!
Shanghai Terrace was mediocre at best, and it was extremely expensive ($500 for 2 people). I would not return. The one positive note was the service: it was excellent. All of the staff and servers were polite, quick, and knowledgeable. The food, however, was small portions, high prices, and not as good as other high-end options, such as Duck Duck Goat. It was a disappointment all around. We would not recommend it.
Great as always!
My second time here at Shanghai. I found appetizers to be unique and outstanding. But the entrees were okay. I had kung pao chicken and couple of vegetable entrees including eggplant one. They felt like just a bit better than average Chinese restaurant. With the quality of appetizers, I was expecting a lot more from main dishes. But still overall very good experience.
It was great the food was excellent and the service was very good.
I grew up in Shanghai, and technically can be consider a local. Most of the plates there we ordered are legit. In other words, they are tasty and acceptable although probably not the best I've tried. Still definitely a good place to enjoy Chinese food.
Food and service were great. Table was cramped, it was a challenge to get in and out of the seats at our table due to the tight quarters. This tight fit was the only downside to the experience.
Loved the food and the atmosphere. Service was rushed and less than attentive.
Been before but this time was not up to expectations
Good but not great
The waiter came to our table and greeted us by name, service was impeccable, food was fresh and delicious and we will surely return again.
Service was above average by far. Host and wait staff were very focused on the diner's needs.
Food for quality, flavor, presentation and creativity was impeccable.
Prices were commensurate with this kind of setting and experience
The Chinese food was very tasty and it was a very quiet relaxing meal off the busy holidays on Michigan Avenue
Exquisite and perfect in every way. Food and staff are amazing.
Near 30th anniversary.
Beyond loud.. and really busy so the taste of food was not at its best. But still one of our favorite place
This, our second visit, confirmed our experience of a disturbingly loud setting, this time with a table of 6 next to us seemingly shouting at each other inanities. Nevertheless, the food preparation was exquisite, from duck salad and dumpling appetizers to Peking duck and chicken sung. The service was attentive and friendly. Architectural changes to dampen sound could entice us back.
My high expectations were not disappointed. In addition to some authentic and out-of-the-ordinary tastes, I especially appreciated that fruit at dessert was high-quality even in mid-December. The whole service team looked out for me and for my guest. Of course, an exceptional experience comes at a higher-than-everyday price, so I will wait until another special occasion for a return trip.
Great food. Great restaurant
superb, knowledgeable service
classical dishes with a twist
Wonderful as usual.
Very pleasant experience. Delicious food and luxurious setting. Impeccable service.
We love this place . It rivals the great chinese places in San Francisco . Excellent service , superb food and a beautiful space .
Amazing food and service! We loved the appetizers, entrees, and beverage recommendations from the knowledgeable staff
My mom and I have dined at the Shanghai Terrace many times, but we wanted my dad to experience the magic as well! He was very impressed, and his birthday dinner was very special, largely because of the amazing food and wonderful staff. Our waitress Anna was wonderful! And the male host in the front was kind enough to take some pictures of the family after dinner. Thanks again for a wonderful experience!
Outstanding service and delicious food!
Great for birthday celebrations!
Every one of the several hosts/servers greeted us by name, introduced themselves , were unusually courteous and knowledgeable about the menu. The decor is delightfully high end Chinese and the food choices plentiful with great variety.
This restaurant was great! The food was authentic Chinese food and a super high quality. There service was great and the atmosphere was nice. I had the lobster with scallop hot and sour soup, lobster & chicken dumplings with black truffle, seafood fried rice with abalone sauce and mixed vegetables. Everyone just so delicious. Thai is my new favorite restaurant in Chicago.
Award winning dumplings! And the Green Tea Creme brûlée was awesome. Highly recommend!
As always, our food at Shanghai Terrace was excellent and service was great. It's a pity that getting great Shanghainese food requires such pomp but there it is. Highly recommended. Oh...and it's not as if you'll get a good pavlova for dessert, (much less a good flat white,) at any run-of-the-mill Asian restaurant.
A pleasant atmosphere, the table was nicely decorated and the plating was beautiful . The service was courteous and we enjoyed delicious food.
The price is disproportionately high.
But still, the experience was pleasant and we enjoyed the evening.
Thank you !
Great hotel, luxurious atmosphere and superb service. Check in was polite and tidy and the wait staff were professional and very friendly. No complaints at all. Top notch- what you would expect from the Peninsula. Having said all that, I have to say that the food was a bit disappointing. Overall criticism was that everything was overcooked making the texture of the food textile like and rough. Missing the soft succulent taste that makes Chinese food great. Also the sauces were a bit tart with a strong almost pungent smell. Not bad but given the atmosphere, service and price point the food doesn’t quite stack up. First time so may have been an off day. Willing to give them another shot. We are from Hong Kong so maybe standard is a bit high.
We have dined in Shanghai and Hong Kong enjoying the same cuisine at a quarter of the price. Excellent service and a beautiful table are features of the restaurant located in the Peninsula hotel. In other words, the dinner price reflects the real estate. As good as it was, it did not justify a $450 tab for four people with only 2 cocktails.
Outstanding service and food. Staff is charming and welcoming even though we came with our 8-year-old kid.
This is a great restaurant. Peking duck is amazing!
