Co-owners and chefs Aaron Israel and Sawako Okochi created a menu that combines both Jewish and Japanese cultures as well as fresh ingredients sourced from local markets. Plates, such as matzoh ball ramen with foie gras dumpling and sake kasu challah with raisin butter, are meant to be shared with the table for dinner. Visit for brunch and enjoy the lox bowl or pastrami-don.

Service at first was good we were served main then forgotten about. Had to wait longer than expected for more water. Coffees were served without milk or sugar. By that time coffees went cold. All the while waiter was in kitchen hanging out. Not returning or reccomending
One of the waiters is extremely rude. Ruined the experience.
Unique fusion of Jewish and Japanese cuisines.
Our third time here. Always excellent. One of our favorite NYC spots.
Impeccable food as always, the kindest + most knowledgable staff, it's always a great time!
Incredible experience. The staff is super nice and helpful. Food was a blast, make sure you get the bread pudding and the teryaki duck wings. Everything is solid though. Seasame Mazemen was really refreshing.
Shalom Japan has been one of my favorite restaurants in all of New York, if not the world, but watching my 11-year old devour four orders of Teriyaki Duck Wings (w/pickled ginger, sesame, scallion) this past weekend was a revelation!
I and my husband ordered from them many times when indoor dining wasn't available and we couldn't wait to go there. Yesterday was the day we went there for the first time and we were very excited then soon very disappointed by their poor service.
1- Made us wait for 10mins standing even with reservation and three empty outdoor tables. They gave people a table who came later than us.
2- We asked them for outdoor table since we saw three empty tables outside then the manager said they were not available with very unfriendly attitude. (Attitude is subjective thing but I and my husband totally agreed with). We assumed empty outdoor tables were all reserved before we made reservation so gave up after asking 3 times.
3- 5mins after we got the indoor table, they gave outdoor tables to people who said they didn't reservation. It happened right next to where we sat since we had a table right next to the entrance. It was very rude.
4- While the waiter was taking finished appetizer plates, he just put our utensils on the table. There was not paper napkins or utensil holders. Not even neatly just put them on the table whatever way. We used those utensils and we were going to use them for main dishes. It's covid/post covid era. You don't want to use utensils on the bare table.
5- I spent about 100 dollars and about to get out of there unhappily but trying to understand them or just forget about sloppy service but nobody even saying "thank you" or "bye".
I'm not asking for 5stars hotel/restaurant service from them but just whole experience was very unpleasant. I like their food but it's not worthy of spending $100 there. Dining out is not only about food but also about atmosphere and service.
There are many other places with good service. I'm not going back there.
Just unbelievably good food! Great service too. So happy I finally went.
We had a great time. The food and service was great! I will definitely be back
We loved everything. The Wagu pastrami sandwich was amazing
Very small portions, especially for the price, but the food was tasty
An extraordinary culinary collision of oddly compatible cuisines. The chefs' vision and execution is nothing short of marvelous!
Delicious food and great service who knew exactly what to recommend
This restaurant is an absolute MUST. We've been many times and it just keeps getting better. There is nothing on the menu I don't recommend but must haves are the sake kasu challah, matzoh ball ramen, sesame temomi mazemen and the pastrami don. Oh and the chocolate banana challah bread pudding. Also, shout out to Rob, the GM who made the experience that much more delightful. He was a great server and great to talk to. 11/10 recommend this restaurant!
Obssessed with this restaurant. Amazing service & even better food & drinks
Ripoff. We had extremely expensive Ramen. Shame on us. It tasted pretty good. And challah rolls $7 each. Shame on us. $100 for 3 bowls of Ramen, one with Egg and 2 Challah rolls split between 3 of us and 1 cream soda. A shanda! Oy vey!
I don't remember the rest of the menu and don't really want to think about it. I won't be back and I won't be recommending.
Location is quite unfortunate as well. Traffic is right in your ears, especially when backed up at the red light. Loud music emanations and trucks "sounds" ruin any atmosphere there isn't.
Really disappointed in our experience last night. Awful service - we waited over an hour for challah bread to come and asked for water refills several times before we were served we sat at 8pm and our food came at 9:45... Additionally we felt the appetizer portions were very small considering the price. $15 for two very small bites of the Japanese hot pocket didn’t seem fair.
Overall bummed that our experience wasn’t good and feel that better service should be expected from a place with high prices like theirs.
Cocktails were VERY good though!
Food is just terrible and pricey considering. Insipid ramen and sashimi salad.
The service was very unpleasant. The food came out extremely late.
Great staff and great food.
great food, great service. the duck wings will change your life.
We had a wonderful meal. Our waiter was so fun and made us laugh the whole time. Will definitely come again.
Tasty food, good drinks, nice atmosphere. Will definitely come back.
Great food awesome staff and really nice place. Well worth it. And such interesting combinations of Japanese and Jewish food.
Truly delicious and original dishes with no pretense. Great for family, kids, and dates who “get it@.
What an amazing place. Took my husband there for his birthday. He is Jewish and love Japanese food. Perfect blend. Drinks were great and the food was amazing!! We will be coming back to try more of the menu.
This place never disappoints. The food is phenomenal, their sake selection is really interesting, great staff. And it is SO comforting how seriously they're taking COVID precautions. A+
Great food! Great service! Love this place.
Bad. Awful. Don’t.
The whole experience was very rushed and we left hungry. $500 for 2 people, did tasting menu and they brought 2 courses at the same time. Outdoor dining was freezing bad heater situation. Gave us a different dessert than what was on the menu at the end and it was nasty. Not enough food and terrible value for what we got.
Loved the prefix valentines brunch menu, and the start were charming.
food was unique and delicious! staff was friendly and atmosphere felt safe- would definitely recommend!
Food was fantastic!!! Service was very attentive. We had almost everything on the menu. The stand out favorites were the challah and pastrami!!! Can’t wait to go back!
Ramen. With pork. Warm, filling, amazing! Also the chirashi. Our waiter was lovely!
We had a great outdoor dinner. Excellent food, cocktails and wine; and even better service. We will be back!
Great food and service!!!
Fantastic experience with their Christmas Prie-Fix menu. The food was delicious and an amazing, unique encounter with Jewish-Japanese Fusion. The staff were so friendly and attentive as well. I'm definitely wanting to come back in the near future to see what their seasonal/special menu is like!
The food was delicious and really interesting! The service staff were very kind and keen to help us however they could.
the food was really great- we loved trying to decipher which part was Jewish and which part was Japanese! Love the mix of flavors. The staff were very friendly and we felt very safe (and warm) eating outside.
