Co-owners and chefs Aaron Israel and Sawako Okochi created a menu that combines both Jewish and Japanese cultures as well as fresh ingredients sourced from local markets. Plates, such as matzoh ball ramen with foie gras dumpling and sake kasu challah with raisin butter, are meant to be shared with the table for dinner. Visit for brunch and enjoy the lox bowl or Shalom Japan burger.
Delicious food! Highly recommend the matzoh ball ramen and the burger for brunch :)
We had an amazing time! Great food! Excellent service!
The food was more than average. A rice paddy covered with a slice of smoked salmon isn’t really a dish...
Truly terrible experience.
We had a reservation at 6pm and arrived a few minutes late (called them to let them know). Our order had been entered into the system by 6:15pm. By 7:58pm we still had one course of the omakase, which is 5 courses, and the dessert to go. They took more than 25 minutes between courses (one of which was a salad - one salad - split between three people). The food was fine, but not excellent, and the concept didn't really come through. At 7:58pm, still hungry and waiting, we asked for the bill so we could leave.
At this point, one of my guests (who was inviting) was really upset and just signed the receipt, which was for the full (overpriced) cost. The waitress told us that if we had a cutoff time we should've let them know because omakase always takes 2hrs and 15 minutes (where is this rule? never heard it in my life). She said "when you come next time you should..." and my guest just said "I don't think there will be a next time" to which she reacted poorly. She then noted that a tip should be left regardless, because it's not the waiter's fault, which, I agree, but when service has been bad, the food hasn't been good and your customer service is garbage, I'm sorry but you don't get to demand *more* things from your guests. If you're sincerely concerned about your waiter, you will discount part of the meal and I know that my guest would've left a tip, but for $250 for 4 bite-sized pieces of food, one bowl of greens to share and sparkling water, that's a lot to ask.
I highly recommend you go somewhere else, especially in Williamsburg where there are so many great options.
Shalom Japan has the perfect blend of Jewish and Japanese cuisine. I loved my matzoball ramen and need to go back so I can make my way through the menu. It is a great venue with a Japanese vibe, but I would only recommend for groups of 4 or fewer people because of space.
Great service, consistently interesting and delicious food.
Wonderful meal! Service was friendly and attentive. Each meal was delicious and enjoyed by all.
They called me the day before Valentine’s Day to tell me that it would be $125 a person prixe fix. I Felt like I got scammed and couldn’t change my plans the day before Valentines. There was no mention of the prixe fix before. The food was sub par and not very special. Walked away with a $400 check. I would never go back!
Lovely as always! The food is spectacular - creative, delicious, and beautifully presented. There were a couple of truffle specials since it’s truffle season: truffle hot pockets, which are a playful rendition of a knish with potatoes and truffles wrapped in a soy skin. We also got a truffle pastrami sandwich which was an improved version of the regular menu pastrami sandwich. You should consider ordering either (depending on your truffle preference), because the pastrami is great. A bowl of ramen is the right move for the NYC winter weather. Will be back!
Amazing food and great friendly service. The sake juice boxes were so fun and delish.
Loved the food!! Great experience for brunch
All the dishes we had were amazing, our server was great and helped us figure out what to order, everything was great.
Good was very tasty. Prices were outrageous.
The staff seemed uninterested in giving a good dining experience and we were also informed that we would only be able to sit for an 1hr and 15min regardless of our reservation. Felt disrespectful and I will not be coming back or recommending. Too many other amazing restaurants where this would never happen.
Scallops were bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb
Excellent menu and service. Will be definitely going again!
Amazing food, would go again!
Blah blah blah blah blah
Absolutely unique place that there is nothing anywhere else like it! The food was fantastic!
Shalom japan presents an innovative take on jewish and japanese cuisine. The dishes are clever, make sense and were delicious. I liked the simple menu, enough options but i was not overwhelmed. The "jew egg", matza ball ramen, and desert sorbet in particular was remarkable.
Absolutely amazing! We did the tasting menu which was a fantastic experience. We got to try nearly every delicious thing on the menu as well as get paired drinks along with every course. The staff was extremely courteous and the whole experience makes me want to go back again and again.
We did the tasting menu. It's great value but the ingredients are also not too expensive. The fusion is executed pretty well considering the vast difference between cultures. The service was slow, forgetting the drink pairing with the courses and the AC wasn't working so it was about 100 degrees in there. I prefer sitting at the bar for dinner, which is nice and spacious since they don't pack the restaurant out.
Food was underwhelming. For such a small menu I expected for some spectacular tasty plates. Oh well.
It was a bit expensive for amount of food.
My wife and I enjoyed everything about the experience.
Amazing Christmas Miyazaki hot pot Pre-fix!
the worst ... the absolute worst ... overpriced, poorly conceived, poorly planned, and poorly executed ... and EXPENSIVE. it was the absolute worst.
We have enjoyed eating here over the years. We had an 8:30pm reservation on Christmas Eve and arrived 5 minutes early. We were told that there would be a 20 minute wait. 40 minutes later our party of six was seated at a table that should have been a table for four.
I understand that on Christmas Eve they are trying to pack in as many people as possible but customer satisfaction is sacrificed.
Also, we received a “sincere” apology a few times for being seated late. But when a restaurant delay of this type occurs, restaurants usually apologize by offering complementary drinks or dishes. That would have been nice after standing for 40 minutes. But no such gesture was made. If it were made, I would not be writing this review.
Prix-fixe Christmas eve dinner was excellent. A little too expensive though.
I just like the place i dont have much to say about it.
Shalom Japan was incredible from the moment we sat down until the moment we left. We did the set price dinner and were amazed at the creativity, quality, and taste of every dish. Furthermore, every single server was more knowledgeable about the dish than the last. The level of passion and professionalism from the staff was incredible. I would drive hours to go back here!!!
Very accommodating and amazing food
We had the Tuna Tataki, Scallops, Sando, and Banana Bread Pudding. I would get all of them again!!
One of my favorite spots to eat in all of the city. Unique and tasty dishes. Never disappoints
We had a lovely time. The food and drinks were delicious and well priced. The service was attentive and the staff knowledgeable. We will definitely be going back. Thank you for making our night memorable.
Very good service and cozy ambiance. The reason I did not give more stars is the quality of the dishes was not consistent. We shared a few things: the Matzoh Ball Ramen, the Pastrami sandwich, and Tuna tataki. The ramen was GREAT, the sandwich was GOOD, but the bread was a bit soggy and soft, and the tuna itself did not taste as fresh as I would have hoped. Overall it was a GOOD experience and an enjoyable time, but I would hope for fresher seafood if I returned, as it seemed to be slightly higher caliber.
Food was amazing!
I've already recommended Shalom Japan to friends. Food is delicious. Service is outstanding. Very busy on a Saturday evening. High noise level, but that's part of the NY experience! It was my husband's birthday and he really enjoyed it! We will definitely be back!
Awesome spot, very nice service crew, eclectic and well executed menu.
Good. Interesting. Love the ambience of the restaurant
