We used Open Table to book a reservation at Shalimar Restaurant for 6:00pm and when we arrived the restaurant had a "Closed" sign on it. I was surprised that Open Table wasn't aware of the closure and the restaurant's website didn't mention it either. It was a disappointing experience and will make me wary of both Open Table and Shalimar Restaurant in the future, though I've used Open Table for years and this is the first time this has happened to me.
Our server was very helpful in helping us with selections. The food was all excellent as was the service. We were there early for dinner so noise level was perfect.
They accepted our reservation, and then were closed for the evening when we got their. Not impressed.
Ac was either broken or not on. Only thing keeping it from five stars. Every dish was rockstar but highlight was seafood curry. Their Indian beers were yummy. Lots of seating here. Will be back for more!!
I reserved a table for a party of 13 to celebrate my brother's graduation. Upon arriving at the restaurant a few minutes before the reservation, the hostess stared at be blankly and stated that they did not have room for us. I showed her my confirmation email from OpenTable and she responded with "OpenTable" never called us to let us know. Instead of trying to accommodate us or being sympathetic she continued to use her blank stare and unforgiving tone to tell us that we could not eat there. None of the staff ever apologized or provided us with an alternative solution. Did I mention that the whole place was empty at 8:30 pm when we arrived? Not sure what was going on there, but seems like you need an in to be able to eat here. I would recommend that OpenTable not work with this business in the future.
I always order the patia with fish (cod). It is a tangy mango curry that I have not found at other restaurants. It's always so consistently good!
I have been going to Shalimar for several years, most often by myself, but also bringing a special friend, or a group from work. Wassif and his wonderful staff always treat me like family, with love and great care. The food is so exquisite! It is a wonderful part of my life
If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. We got to the place and the sign on the door said "closed for a private party." Why accept a reservation if you're going to be closed? I tried to ask what was the story, but couldn't find anyone that spoke enough English to give me an answer.
The food is just not worth it. There is no freshness to food in fact everything tastes months old and greasy gross. Never going back. Worst $70 I ever spent on food. Now bare in mind, I am Indian and know what good Indian food even average Indian food should taste like. N complaints for the servers or service. But food is just awful.
The food was great. Only one complaint is that a worker were vacuuming while we were dining. Wish she had done the vacuuming after hours not while people were eating. Cause she was doing it all over and around everyone who was eating. And then she stopped to vacuum to serve a sizzling dish to a customer and almost dropped it. I just thought that was insanitary of her to do that.
We sat for quite a while before our server came over to greet us, but once she did the wait staff was very attentive and very friendly. The food was excellent, The only disappointment was that they did not offer brown rice in addition to white rice.
The food was very flavorful. We dined early so it was very quiet. The staff was kind and courteous.
Excellent meal here! From out of town and traveled a bit of a ways to go, and it didn't disappoint in the least. The food had quality ingredients and great attention to detail. The naan was gigantic - great for sharing. Service was outstanding. Definitely worth recommending !
Best server ever
Shalimar was outstanding, from the buttered Naan, daal and papadams to my Patia (mango curry), and my friend's Jaipuri (signature dish). Really great that they can adjust the spiciness of your dish. Lovely candles and little waterfall, elegant and enjoyable atmosphere and the staff were very attentive. I am coming back!
Our waiter was so great. He gave us great customer service and the food was so tasty. We will be back for sure!!
Enjoyable and friendly family restaurant. When they mention family's style, they truly mean it! The portions are large and we ended up taking most of our meal home with us. Traditional food with great ambience and energy.
Ordered the Goat Madras curry and Sheesh Kabab. The food was phenomenal. There is no compromise on the flavor or spices and spicy does not imply HOT! Definitely going back and trying the remaining menu items.
Friendly and helpful service and oh so authentic & delicious dishes!
Our first visit, Tikka Masala and Jaipuri were excellent. Staff friendly, helpful and attentive.
The staff was nice, but overall it was just an ok experience. Not bad... it was just like so many other places, nothing jumped out at me. Food was ok, great spice but i was distracted... in between serving, 2 of the staff members would stand toward the entrance of the dining room and just stare out over the guests eating. Then they would whisper to one another, and go back to standing there and staring at everyone.
Perhaps they were looking through the window but I certainly don't think so. :)
Again, the food was fine, but overall a very dry experience.
This was our second visit to Shalimar, celebrating my birthday with good friends. The food was, as we expected, delicious and beautifully presented. We will definitely return--it doesn't need to be for a celebratory dinner.
Very tasty Indian food with some stuff you don't see at other restaurants, and a very friendly and helpful staff.
Our meal was very good with plenty of food. They had run out of several of the beers on their menu and they had NO record of my reservation but we didn't need it anyway. This is a very nice place with great food - a welcome treat in the grubby U District.
Shalimar is my favorite Indian restaurant in Seattle. I've never ordered something I haven't liked here.
Bindhi should be grilled/roasted not cooked so that was a miss. Chicken was clearly frozen and cooked too shortly after thaw so the taste was bad. Naan was huge and tasted more like pizza bread but it was very fresh. Papadum, I ordered never made it to the table and employees were all eating at the back table together so I had to hail down someone coming in (looked like owner). Giant plates look overwhelming. Waitress was nice enough to credit me for the bindhi.
A very pleasant surprise! If you enjoy real Indian food - this is the place!! The atmosphere is very pleasant and the food is simply great. The wait staff are very capable - but keep to themselves. I loved the Chicken Dishes with stir fried vegetables! I would definitely go back!!! It is also very walkable from the Marriott Residence Inn.
We only manage to dine here once a year. It was so incredibly delicious with gracious service in a relaxing, lovely environment, that we will return @ least for lunch :) Wonderfully authentic food, reminding us of our time in the Indian Subcontinent so long ago!
Bravo for keeping it authentic and low-key!
Excellent food and service. Would definitely eat here again. Kid friendly and Vegetarian friendly.
Food was just ok, kind of luke warm upon arrival. The Naan was very bready/doughy but they took it off my bill. The pistachio ice-cream was out of this world good.
A bit longer than expected to get food given the amount of people in the restaurant, but worth the wait. The bhatora was incredible, Naan was solid.
The food was good from both quality and quantity perspective. Service was excellent. Price was little higher but overall a very pleasant place to dine
My chicken curry was exceptional! Perfect taste! I've had better Naan bread, but theirs was ok. The service was incompatible with the food. Not rude, but very impersonal and lackluster. They took my order, brought my food. No smiles, no greetings, kind of robotic. Beware that they only serve beer and wine, and not particularly good wine. If you want a good plate of Indian food, this will work. But if you're looking for an "experience", you won't find it here.
This is the staple Indian restaurant in the U-District, the neighborhood that's arguably the epicenter of all such restaurants in the city. The food and service are excellent, and the family that runs the place is lovely. That said, this is Seattle, and the food they serve (and their business) would SERIOUSLY benefit from having beer on tap.
The lamb and okra are amazing, if you're into that sort of thing. The chef and owner came out to tell us about the dishes and even customized some items for us. Great food and generous portions.
I took my daughter here for a date. She is a vegetarian who loves a wide variety of ethnic foods. She loved it. One of the aspects that I enjoyed the most was the variety. Many Indian restaurants have a somewhat regional menu. Their menu highlighted food from all parts of the country. Great diversity.
While most Indian Restaurants are white tablecloth, they don't have the greatest atmosphere. Shalimar looks great and it feels good to eat there. Lovely stone wall with flickering candles are lovely. Good menu selection and I have never had a bad dish.
Very good dishes and excellent ambiance (i.e. Quiet)
Made a reservation days prior. When we came in, table was not ready. Requested rose was not on table (they at least brought one out later). Server didn't introduce herself, she just asked if we were ready about 8 minutes after we sat down. They were out of the wine we wanted, she just brought two others over for us to choose from. Food was presented poorly. Chopped onions were thrown over rice in one spot as if I was hurried out. Water was replenished at a good pace. Price was okay, a little on the expensive side for what we got.
Overall, it was OK. Not great.
They did not have our reservation on order. Also, the service was slower, less responsive than usual. Which is a bummer because I love coming here.
