Shakou St. Charles Ratings and Reviews
This was our 3rd or 4th visit to Shakou. Food has always been excellent and we have sampled much of the menu. The raw oysters and Golden Lobster are must-try in my opinion.
The environment tries to tap into a downtown-Chicago feel, house music usually a little on the loud side, very modern décor, valet service.
Our only gripe with Shakou has been the service. It's been consistently average to below average; but mostly little things that are an annoyance and not affecting the experience to the point where we don't want to come back. If the food wasn't great, it may have turned us off. Forgetting place settings, plates, empty soy sauce; servers not knowing the food/drink menu all that well; slow on drinks, etc, etc.
It's still an overall positive experience and somewhere I recommend.
The food was outstanding! Very fresh ingredients and delicious. Presentation was very interesting and large portion sizes.
Our waitress was seemingly missing at times and we sat with empty glasses for over 5 minutes.
She was nice when she did come by.
The booth seat was very uncomfortable. The edge under the knee was too high. None of the four in our group could place their feet on the floor.
Very good! Went here for a homecoming dinner and did not disappoint. Waitress was very friendly and food came out in a good amount of time (and tasted so good!) It’s a little pricey, but with high price comes high quality food! Would definitely recommend for a nice date, a special occasion, or if you’re just feelin some high quality sushi!
I've been here about 4 times......food is excellent everytime I've gone! Love the decor....the only complaint is the "house" music is EXTREMELY LOUD!!! Don't plan on a romantic date because you'll end up having to yell at each other to be able to hear. I went this weekend to the St. Charles restaurant, there were 4 of us, the person I was sitting next to was the only one I could talk to because we got tired of yelling at the 2 sitting across the table. A bit loud for dinner music, definately night club vibe, needless to say when I left the restaurant I had a horrible headache. I will think twice about going back for this reason which is unfortunate because the food is so good.
We had a lovely meal at Shaku before a show at the Arcada which is just a 5 minute walk away. The calamari appetizer was delicious, the crunch melt and Devil's crab were fresh and beautifully prepared. Service was great. Will definitely return if we come to the area again.
They do a nice job with the food, no complaints there. We were not satisfied with the bat service. They put us in the awkward position of sending drinks back, at $12 per, they should be spot on. We sent them back twice, we had to compromise. Disappointing and with no apologies. There are too many options out there to try here again.
Had 7:00 reservation, seating right away upstairs. Everything looked good, decor, food outstanding.
Upstairs music was dance loud thumping music and not necessary for the dinner hour at a Japanese restaurant. Plus they had huge TV's everywhere distracting; again, not necessary. Both out of place.
Service was okay; thought she could have been more informative on menu choices and recommendations.
Second time here. The atmosphere was fine and the place was lovely as always. I won't be coming back due to the exorbitant pricing. $20 for a roll that didn't "wow" and had browning avocado is absolutely not worth it. I paid $63.00 for two rolls, two pieces of salmon nigiri, side order of vegetable fried rice and a glass of plum wine. The pricing is obviously meant to pay for the real estate. It's a great looking place, for sure, but not worth the $$$$$$.
First, I have never tasted Soy Sauce with so much salt. After tasting the regular asked for low sodium and not different. The miso was only fair as strong smell of fish. And the rolls were heavy on rice and low on fish. The best item was the gyoza.
They need a little more manpower on waitstaff, though our waitress was very good she was stretched a little thin. Noise level somewhat elevated for us, in that we were trying to share an anniversary. Great food and wonderful presentation. Our second time here. First time was with larger group. Maybe consider separate area in upstairs seating for more intimate gatherings, for two to four tops?
In my opinion, the food did not live up to the expectation for the price point. Service was not anything special, just the standard check how the food is once after it was delivered. Information was given incorrectly on substituting items that I was later charged for. My side salad came out before appetizers and I would have expected it with my entree. Our server also made a point to pick up the completed check moments after I filled it out, which was well before she would have been closing out a shift and there were plenty of open tables, so not really turning and burning so to speak. Ambiance was nice, but no outdoor seating surprised me given the vast other local options for it. Overall the food and service did not meet what I would expect for a meal over $100 for two entrees, an appetizer and two cocktails. Unfortunately I would not recommend this location to other people.
I love it every time I eat at Shakou. Terrific cocktails and great food. I brought my relatives from California who eat sushi all the time. They were super impressed with selections, taste and ambiance. It's like bringing the city to the burbs! It is a must try and if you do, you will want to go back again and again.
I will not be back. I had heard amazing things but we were disappointed. The service was terrible. It took an hour to get our food on a slow, Thursday night. And our server forgot one of our items and brought it out after everyone had finished eating. The food was fine but nothing spectacular and it was a bit over priced. We tried Shakou because we usually go to Wok N' Fire and wanted something new - it was a mistake and we will be going to Wok N' Fire instead moving forward!
The food tasted amazing! My husband who is Japanese was blown away by the taste of the rolls (and the size) and the sashimi. Teriyaki chicken grilled to perfection with a hint of spicyness. The overall feel is nice and relaxing. It's high class so expensive but not too expensive for what you get!
