Shakou Libertyville Ratings and Reviews
Love the food, service, staff and decor. The menu is overwhelming but the wait staff can make great recommendations. Highly suggest engaging in this conversation with your server to find the perfect appetizer, entree and cocktail. Wish there was valet parking though!
The diver scallop dinner was so heavy sodium laden I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth until next day. Someone has to tell the cook to back off on loading up the dishes on salt. I'm not sure if they're covering something up (fishy smell) or it's part of the process to way over salt things. 2 thumbs way down!!!
So disappointing. We used to love going to Shakou- unfortunately the food quality and service has deteriorated. My husband had to wait 10 minutes for a knife to cut his steak. By the time it arrived the steak was cold. For the price, the quality is just not there. My beef and fried rice was very greasy and my husband’s steak, though cold, was flavorless. It was interesting, too, that there were quite a few empty tables around us for a Friday night.
We had made a reservation and a table was reserved right in the front area - where it is noisy - we were accommodated with a different table (booth) quickly upon our request. ( we are 3 hearing impaired folks & a booth help reduce surrounding noise for us).
Nice to find a restaurant that doesn't have sports playing on TVs. Unique atmosphere considering the location. Simple contemporary design. Pricey, but good size portions - not a deal breaker. Great salmon, ribs, crab cakes, and bacon-wrapped scallops! Plenty of FREE parking around back, two multi-level city structures. If that was in Chicago, you would be adding $30 to your evening.
Downtown vibe, downtown décor and downtown noise. The music is so loud you can't hear your diner companion and when we asked the server to turn it down he said he would try but management wanted that downtown vibe. Lots of other patrons were complaining about the volume, but the music choices were great! The food is really good, but getting it to the table is EXTREMELY slow. Drinks were good, appetizer was good. To make this a great restaurant for me they need to turn down the volume so you can enjoy your friends and not have a sore throat from shouting for 2 and a half hours and get the food out faster!!
Tempura was ok, batter was too heavy, vegetable pieces sliced, cut too big, though the portion was good-sized for price. Beef asparagus appetizer uniquely portioned as a sushi roll. Flavorful and tender, would have liked more asparagus in center.
Beer was a tad overpriced at $10.
Tried a couple of Maki rolls. One, "Black Widow" was so unevenly cut, could not eat it without cutting, it was so big. Eel inside was tough to chew. "Flaming Himachi" was beautifully done and well balanced flavors with a good amount of heat.
Great atmosphere, beautifully decorated, good service. A bit overpriced at $20., and $17., for sushi rolls. $70.00 food and one drink each without tip for two people.
