Shakewell
Excellent food, excellent service. I recommended the chicken and churros for brunch!
Food is so good, it makes up for the crowded and noisy ambience. The paella is out of this world!!! Drink menu is fun and innovative, service is great. But - tables are WAAAAAY too close together. I could barely hear my friend sitting across from me due to proximity of couples on either side.
This was a birthday dinner, so chose a place I already like. Shakewell did not disappoint! Loved the cardamon cheesecake. : )
Fun birthday dinner at Shakewell! Every dish was delicious - we’ll be back after the Stay-at-home order is lifted.
I’ve always enjoyed Shakewell. When got have a reservation, the seating process is quick and seamless. The food and drinks are great. The servers understand the menu and can help you make great choices if you aren’t sure. I love this place!
Excellent takeout!
Really nice place. Neither too posh or too casual. Good food from a menu with great selection. The wine is good and the bartender makes one of the best gimlets I've had.
Absolutely delicious food. For price, such small portions.
Excited about this place. Cocktails were well done. Expected a better food experience. Octopus was cooked well but not as tender/texture when cooked exceptionally well. Tabasco flavor seemed to dominate the accompanying sauce. Overall, very good but I had very high expectations from what I had heard and so was a little disappointed.
We were a little disappointed about the quality of the food: salad was way overdressed, lamb and beef kefta were tough, za'tar flatbread was just like pita, and bacalao croquetas were bland...and we each only had one drink (a glass of wine/beer) and it cost $100.00 with tip. I understand the need to raise prices to pay workers a fair wage, but this was a little ridiculous. Won't be going back.
Did was great, service was slow
Had a great experience . Waiter had good suggestions.
We really enjoyed this wonderful fun restaurant.Great food, service and bar.
Very cool place to eat. Parking can be tricky. Great service
I’ve been to Shakewell previously & the only reason I don’t go more often is the noise levels are outrageous. Surely an acoustics expert could make some simple recommendations for reducing the high decibel noise level. It’s a major detractor. It’s just not fun to have to shout at one’s dining companion(s). But the food is fantastic, it’s just not relaxing to eat amidst so much noise.
Food and service were great. Enjoyed the art and lighting. It was very loud inside and I couldn't hear well. Also, I tend to not enjoy having a TV visible, since I'm distractible. If you have good hearing and don't mind a TV visible in a restaurant, then you'd probably give this place 5 stars.
Delightful Valentine's dinner. Great service. Very good Spanish cuisine.
Overall excellent!!!!!!!!! Great food great service. Just a bit noisy.
Classy neighborhood lunch, brunch, or dinner spot with delicious food and full bar. What more could you want??
I always love coming to shakewell. The wait is normally 30-45 when the owner says an hour and a half. But we made reservations this time. The mimosas kept coming and the chicken and churros is always my fav!!
We went to celebrate a friend's birthday. I called ahead to make sure the we were given a good table and was assured that our table was great. Well it was right by the kitchen and on the main walkway for all wait staff. This place isn't just a little bit noisy. The food was salty. The service was good. This was a return visit but not sure I will go a third time.
We love Shakewell, but this wasn't our best meal so far. Not to worry! We'll keep coming back!
Good food and service
Wonderful restaurant and staff:)
Delicious Olives! I loved the reimagined beet salad. We had the Octopus and the Jamon Croquette (I wasn't really a fan of the croquette, maybe I just don't understand it).
our favorite place, always good, lively crowd, cozy space.
Service was off. Waitress was distracted and dishes were left on table although we had finished.
The kitchen turns out lots of deep fried dishes - not a good sign. If this is what you do, then at least make sure the inside of your fried items is hot.
Cocktails mediocre.
Not worth the money. Would not recommend it to anyone.
Very tasty brunch food - churros and hash were delicious. Nice, low-key yet classy atmosphere. Not too difficult to get a table for weekend brunch. Hoping to go back for the dinner some time. Would recommend!
The food is always delicious and creative. Service is friendly but very slow and not attentive. It’s way overpriced. This will be our last time here
Shakewell served quality food that is tasty and innovative. The servers were pleasant and prompt. We had a lunch but we'll go and check out the dinner. I had a three course veg. menu and my wife had three course choice with a steak sandwich. The squash soup was hearty and delicious. Both of our entrees were well executed. And chocolate dessert with caramel souce was memorable. Its Mediterranean menu appeals to us in California.
The noise level was over the top. You may want to call it energetic but I call it impossible to enjoy a
good tasting meal. In fact one of my birthday guest who was having dinner with us left in the middle of his entre because the noise level. I enjoyed the food but found myself eating fast so I could leave the restaurant.
I also found the service to be indifferent. Not unfriendly but indifferent.
This may be the new standard for restaurants. Delicious well prepared food is why you go to have dinner at a special restaurant but ambience and service is a must for me as well as the others I was eating with.
I do not see myself ever returning to Shakewells.
Our first visit & we enjoyed ourselves. One constructive concern..it was cold and drafty & we ended up eating with our coats on! Brrrr...
The flatbread with zatar was very good as were the brussel sprouts as starters. I had the classic paella with prawns and clams; overall the dish was very tasty and a much larger portion than I could eat at one sitting. The prawns were excellent, perfectly cooked and delicious. The clams were miniscule. My friend had the octopus and enjoyed it very much. We finished with the churros, which were a little disappointing. They could have been crispier (maybe smaller) and would have benefitted from addition of a little cinnamon.
Service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing.
A bit loud but food and drinks were amazing.
Came here for Oakland Restaurant Week with a reservation through OpenTable. We were greeted and seated promptly after arrival, with friendly service all around.
We had one order from the prix fixe menu: leafy green salad, grilled terrace major (bistro steak), and almond cake; as well as the fried chicken. We also ordered a few drinks, which were both tasty. The salad had a nice mix, and of decent portion. The bistro steak and the almond cake, though, were small in portion. Both had great flavor. The steak was cooked to a nice medium rare. I just wish there was more of it, even for the restaurant week price. The almond cake slice was tiny. The fried chicken was delicious and offered a nice portion.
I would come back and recommend to a friend, just not for the bistro steak or almond cake for the price.
Great time as always just cant wait for the Wednesday Fried Chicken dinner special
My family goes here for brunch for birthdays and special occasions. Staff are wonderful, personable and accommodating. Our favorite spot in the Bay for brunch.
Most of the dishes seem to use the same sauce which is disappointing
The best of the Bay!
Best thing I can say about this restaurant is that it feels like a local spot, with a comfortable welcoming atmosphere, and has food fit for a fine dining restaurant. For me, best of both worlds. The server was knowledgeable, patient and friendly. All of her recommendations were excellent. Highlights include Fried Chicken, Octopus and mushroom toast.
We had friends visiting from out of town and took them to Shakewell for brunch. We had to let them know about chicken and churros! Also, the Shakshura is amazing. Portions are generous and flavors delicious.
