Sunday brunch selection was outstanding. I always appreciate their use of seasonal produce - today’s salad of little gems, kohlrabi, poached pears, and seasoned hazelnuts was AMAZING. I only wish they could do something about the noise level - having to shout across the table to be heard is a drag and keeps me from coming back more often.
our server was wonderful, but the bar and kitchen were excruciatingly sloooooow for a 5:30 reservation amidst a mostly empty restaurant. 25 mins for cocktails. 45 for our starter, which was notably awful: jamon croquettes. They were like slimy, snotty glue; the most overbeaten potatoes I've ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth! but the special fish dish for 2 was perfectly cooked and spectacular. as were the plated veggies with it and the side of corn. again, service was great....and stick with the specials!
We really love the food here--very creative, veg and fruit oriented, and tasty. I just wish the place wasn't so CRAZY LOUD.
Lovely 3 course lunch for $20. Perfect amount of food.
Every dish we ordered was excellent and the service was top notch. Portions are generous. We probably could have ordered less, but I got to take home the leftovers. :-)
The only downside is the lack of parking.
We loved everything about Shakewell! We were greeted warmly by the hostess, the servers were all very attentive without hovering, and the food came out a a good pace keeping up with us perfectly. Every flavor was spot on giving us a few pleasant surprises like the mint in the octopus salad, fantastic! There was a nice variety of wine with an unexpected 20% off on bottles on Wednesday night. We will be back and encourage our friends to dine there when they are in the area! The only thing, less than stellar, was the name which made me think of a burger joint and if our friend hadn't know of the restaurant I might have passed by it based on the name...don't make that mistake!
We find the food superior to other nearby restaurants, although it’s about 75% more expensive a meal than some other places. But: portion size has increased.
The fried chicken is amazing. I always get it, and have brought several people here.
Lousy new menu
The service is amazing - super friendly and patient wait staff, and delicious food as always!
I love Shakewell the menu is ever changing which is exciting and the seasonal options are delicious but I do wish for a larger salad option However any foodie will thoroughly enjoy the brunch and dinner 👌🏼
*Excellent* food and very good wines with terrific, professional and friendly service in a stylish setting. The corn dish, felafel, broad beans and vegetarian paella were all delicious, and the waiter was very helpful in directing us to great wines to compliment the food and our tastes.
delicious spot for a light and healthy lunch. Would definitely recommend to friends.
Food was all overcooked and tasteless. Ordered the potatoes, which were practically burnt and extra cdry and hewy (yuck), the fried chicken which was way too dry and overcooked, and the paella, which was also overcooked, dry, and burnt on the edges. I don't get why a chef would ruin such great ingredients to produce such overcooked crap. We left a lot of food on the table, paid $220 (also for a bottle of wine which was 20% off b/c "Wednesday Wine," and vowed never to return. I don't get the hype at all.
Great cocktails, excellent small plates to share. Highly recommend the octopus- perfectly cooked. Also the corn salad. Staff was highly responsible about a gluten allergy we had at the table. Many thanks!
Must have a bomba (paella ) every time we come. Tried the squid ink this time and it’s the new favorite
We really enjoyed the braised pork shoulder. With our salad we enjoyed the cute little Peruvian tomatoes! Our wine choice -the Tempranillo was excellent.
Everything was amazing from the cocktails and wine to the service to the fried stuffed olives, the amazing squid ink paella to the most amazing halibut dish I have ever had!
Getting there and parking was easy and the area is nice. We hit up a few shops and the Cat Bar beforehand and grabbed some goodies from a small bakery down the street to bring home for dessert.
This is my new favorite restaurant. Will definitely be back!
The menu has a varied selection and everything we tasted was delicious. Service was good but the place was very busy for Saturday brunch and they may have been understaffed. We really enjoyed the music but it was a bit too loud, which made conversation difficult. We also liked that the crowd was diverse—all ages, ethnicities, etc. This area of Oakland is charming and we had no trouble finding parking. We will definitely go back—looking forward to trying Shakewell for dinner!
This is one of my favorite restaurants. It's in my neighborhood, the food is great, and the people are friendly and very competent. I enjoy lunch and dinner there regularly and there is plenty that works with my serious lactose intolerance. The lunch specials are the best bargain in town.
The only down side is that it is too noisy at dinner to have meaningful conversation.
Squid ink paella with added sausage and prawns was A plus. Drinks were excellent.
Good food, good service.
First - understand that it is located in a trendy part of Oakland (upper Lakeshore) and patrons have money to spend.
Two of three people at dinner had lived in Madrid for several years (~9 years) and are very used to various Spanish styles of cooking.
The starters were OK but overpriced. The spicy sauce was good however on the potatoes. I had never seen blue potatoes in Spain however.
The main meal was good. The carne asada (flank steak) was cooked perfectly. If you have issues with salt, you might ask them to reduce the amount they use however. Two of the three people at our table had the Paella they loved it. They had it with fresh fish and chicken (a classical style in Spain). Personally I did not see much chicken in it but I did taste the rice and it was done correctly even if the crusty part was on top and not on the bottom as is normal.
Skip the Sangria. Not much taste and too much water perhaps in it. For the price, it was not worth it. To be honest, as a great fan of Sangria (and I have it often when I am in Madrid), most Sangria drinks in the US tend to be created by individuals who have not had the chance to drink "real" Sangria in Spain. They are often missing the entire concept of what Sangria is supposed to be.
We did share the Churros and Chocolate sauce desert. It was served hot as is expected. While in Spain, it is really more of a morning item, it worked well as a desert here as it was cooked correctly.
Would I go back? I would but I would try different starters. I would also skip the Sangria and just have the house red wine (tinto de casa).
Great food and very knowledgeable staff. Happy to accommodate food allergies. Mostly small plates so prices are pretty expensive for the amount of food you receive.
We went before 6 and sat at the bar and it took 15 minutes for anyone to notice us, even tho the place was empty. And while the food used to be really good, we ordered four apps and only one was as good as I expected. The rest were just ok or not worth eating. We ended up leaving and going to dinner somewhere else so I can't comment on the entrees. I asked my friends if they had the same experience and they said yes and they think Shakewell is mostly riding on their former rep and not their current output.
Just inattentive wait staff. Left without water, and drinks for long periods of time. Last course took forever and so did our bill.
Shakewell for brunch is always a good bet. They change their menu or parts of it frequently so there is always something new to choose from. Even the old standbys...chicken and churros or French toast are totally delicious.
Always a pleasure! Love the Bloody Mary’s!!
Very good & interesting cocktails. Good wine menu. Great service by their staff. Food was excellent. We shared the bacalao croquetas appetizer, the watermelon and feta salad, and a paella. More than enough food for two. Great place!
We love the food and understand it's a popular restaurant that is always crowded which is why we made a reservation well in advance to host a family member in town for brunch. Unfortunately, we had to wait quite a while, even with the confirmed reservation, for our table. We were finally offered one in the bar area that is usually used for walk-ins - because apparently the reserved tables weren't turning over as fast as they had planned. The service was a little slower than usual so it was clear they were slammed. We will go back, but not for Sunday brunch, and try to find other times where reservations are better planned for.
I went here with my husband on a Saturday night. The food was outstanding, the ambiance really hip and nice, and the service was fantastic. I will definitely one back!
I loved everything about this place. Only wish they had some louder music in the dining space
Food was delicious. Great place to meet up with friends.
Good drinks and food. I had the Sanctuary (cocktail) and classic paella w/ shrimp & chicken- yummy! Split the paella with friend and we had leftovers.
Service could’ve been better. Made reservations thru Open Table for 6:15pm. However, hostess showed it was for 5:54? and assumed I was late, which was odd because earlier I also confirmed RSVP via phone call. My friend & I ended up sitting at the bar. The bartender’s service was good though.
Always great. We love Shakewell! Do I really need 50 characters?
Our waiter was seriously the best ever. Very attentive, anticipated all our needs. Keep up the good work Shakewell you employ great people
The food was great, the service could have been more personable , engaging and no check backs were done...the staff could have sold us more if they had been more attentive
My wife and I really liked the atmosphere and the paella was outstanding. I'm not usually into cocktails, however their "Sanctuary" was just the ticket. The only downside was the dry chocolate cake for dessert. I will definitely be back!
Spectacular food and a great atmosphere. The service was a little slow, but impeccable.
