Four of us enjoyed a well prepared, delicious dinners. We were seated immediately even though we were 10 minutes early for our reservation time. Our waiter Sage was very pleasant and knowledgeable (even though he said he only began working there a week before). The wait time for dinner 's arrival from the order time was not too long. We also found the prices to be very reasonable. Our out -of -town guests enjoyed being at Shadwell's and we will return again.
Wonderful as always!! Love the food and cocktails. Definitely will be back
We were being kicked out the door by 9:00 p.m. so that the staff could sit at the bar and drink after we left. We were not looking for any service from them, but it would have been nice of them to allow us to stay and finish our wine after we had paid for it + a full dinner. They vacuumed the place while we and other tables were still in the restaurant finishing our dinner! Food is heavy and not healthy, and the service was very poor. Will not return.
We had a fantastic dining experience at Shadwell's. The steaks were perfectly prepared to medium rate and the side dishes were also seasoned well and the entire tasting experience was excellent. Our waitress Emily was very attentive and very knowledgeable of the upcoming menu changes -- most notably in the wine list.
My wife and I have been to Shadwell's many times over the past several years. It is one of our favorite restaurants, and on this last visit we continued to be very satisfied with both the quality of the food and service. If you are looking for a very nice, relaxed and unpretentious dining experience at reasonable prices you really can't go wrong with Shadwell's.
Good service. Our server, Jason was attentive and informative. The she crab soup, scallops and oyster tacos were seasoned lightly and perfectly cooked. Cocktails were unique.
Birthday dinner, my pick because of oystravaganza, good but a bit disappointed, service and well, not much better than a chain restaurant. We live in downtown Charlottesville and have many locally owned creative eats available. Maybe I should have given them heads up, my bday celebration. Waiter had tag along to train. Sorry but this won’t be a repeat. We’ll buy fresh seafood, and steaks and cook at home next time.
The moment we walked in we knew we were in for a special dinning out experience. The service was excellent. Our server was energetic, courteous and very attentive. And of course the food was sublime. The grilled salmon with wild rice and asparagus was the best. Shadwell's made our Easter Sunday even more special.
Nice for our get together for Easter lunch.
Another nice meal at Shadwells. We love seafood and come here instead of someplace like Bonefish.
Between the three of us we had oysters, shrimp and rockfish. All were enjoyable. Also loved the cocktails we chose.
Efficient, attentive, responsive and great food too.
Burger was one of the best I’ve had. Service was great. We will be back!
The restaurant was very good. The waitress was very nice as well.
I had reserved the back room for our gathering. I called around lunchtime to confirm my reservation and to make sure that we indeed had the back room. When guests arrived the hostess was totally discombobulated and told the early arrivals that she didn’t have a reservation. I arrived and she located the reservation, but we had to wait because the table wasn’t ready. The hostess then attempted to sit us out in the restaurant. When she took us to the table, I said no, we had the back room reserved. She stated that no one told her and I told her that I had called earlier in the day to confirm, at which time she said that no one left her any notes and that she had to talk to her manager. After waiting another 15 minutes, we were finally seated in the back room as requested, but it was painfully obvious that the staff wasn’t happy about it. Unfortunately, our party of 8-10 dwindled to 6, but we still should not have been subjected to this behavior by the staff. As this was a going away dinner, we lingered over dinner after paying our bill. The bus boy kept sticking his head in the door and finally slammed new tablecloths on the back of the booth just outside the door. We decided that this was his clue that they wanted us to leave. It was around 10 pm, so we assumed that they must close at 10. I am unsure that I will be willing to book another reservation. The waitress was quite good, although she took a long time between seating us and coming back for drink orders.
I am always pleased with my visit to Shadwell's! Good food, well served and at a reasonable price
While my wife loved the chocolate bourbon pecan pie, she thought it was over powered by the whipped cream and chocolate sauce. She said she would enjoy it more if it were pared with simple vanilla ice cream.
I went there with my son when visiting. I was very happy with the choice that was made and the food was excellent. The service was exemplary. It was quiet enough for us to have a conversation and considering Charlottesville is a college town we had a bit of an older mature clientele but yet still very upbeat and enthusiastic!
Meal was good as always though they have changed menu and removed some old favorites such as sweet potato biscuits. It was a little noisy but a there was a large party and normal Friday night business so pretty full. We could still carry on a table conversation without too much problem. A good place to go for a special occasion!
We have been going to Shadwells since 2014 when we came to Virginia for a visit. Once we moved here we have come back often since it is one of the best restaurants in Charlottesville. The food is very good along with the service. Just wish they would bring back the cheese cake. It was the best.
Although the seafood dishes we ordered (lobster ball appetizer and salmon entree) were very good, the fish and chips was a bit soggy and the burger fairly average, though the French fries were pretty good. The decor is in dire need of updating; very bland, somewhat morose, with a 1980s vibe. The service was adequate. Overall, it wasn’t a bad restaurant, but I don’t feel that’s it’s a place that I would look forward to re-visiting.
Shadwells removed the B-B-Q ribs/baked potatoes from the menu. This item is what we liked.
Excellent meal. Convenient location for travel.
Seating was exactly on time. Wait Service was excellent and attentive. Time for waiting for food after ordering was exceptionally long. Food was presented beautifully and was tasty.
We had reservations and were seated promptly on the bar side in a booth when we arrived. The booths are a little hard to get in and out of, especially for a big man. We were greeted promptly at the table. I think our waitress may have been a little new because she wasnt very engaging or had suggestions. My husband is allergic to beef so he ordered the crab cake sandwich which he said was delicious. I had a chicken sandwich-very good too. We weren’t hungry for a big meal so the appetizer and sandwich options were great. Love that they take reservations. We will be back.
Booths are little tight. Good for skinny people or kids. Not comfortable for people with back pain.
Food was good but does need renovations. My booth seat was held together with duck tape!
The restaurant was empty, yet we were seated next to the only other occupied table by the kitchen. I ordered the rockfish which was undercooked over runny rissoto which was supposed to have crab meat, but the taste was onions and carrots. The rolls were good. The fish and chips which my husband ate were fine. Although it was a bright sunny day, the room we were in was very dark and oppressive. Live in the city, but probably won't go back.
Enjoyable evening. Calamari, Wedge Salad, Rolls & Crab Cakes were excellent. 7 oz. filet was tasty but looked to be 4 oz - and somewhat tough. Noah the waiter was friendly and responsive. If you go then definitely ask for him.
Food was outstanding, portion size was more than adequate. The service was excellent even though they were extremely busy. This was our first visit and we will definitely go back. The fish and chips were the best we've had in the area and the rockfish was perfectly prepared on a bed of crab grits. Overall a great experience and we will return.
We were ale to squeeze a reservation in for Valentine's Day and our waitress was very nice. Of course like all things, their computer broke down late in the evening and they had to come manually confirm the order, but they were very good about the follow up.
We've been there numerous time and enjoy going back. They need to put the Thomas Jefferson biscuits back n the menu!
Our table wasn’t ready at our reserved time. I don’t know if those who were waiting but seated before us also had reservations. There was a backup because it was Valentines Day. The server thought to bring us bread because the food was delayed. His service was excellent throughout. Overall, I wouldn’t be bothered but my steak was overdone.
Went here for Valentine's dinner. I got the ribeye and my wife got the filet and crabcake. We both got asparagus and fingerling potatoes. My steak had a good taste, but beef was a bit tough, which is odd for a ribeye. My wife loved her crabcake but left most of it, too tough. Veggies uneventful. Oh, I also got the French onion soup, which was tasty! No bread on the table but I noticed that others had some. Maybe an oversight?
The restaurant is nice and the service was average. Our steaks were cooked opposite and asparagus & potatoes didn't quite seem like they were cooked enough but still okay. Good beer selection on tap though! Nice bar scene. Overall, maybe a 3/5 experience. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to go there again.
Best crab cakes in Ch’ville! Their TJ’s biscuits are excellent also, however, they were out of them the last time we dined there.
We have dined at Shadwells many times and it's become our favorite restaurant
For that reason we made reservations for Valentine's.
We were seated fairly promptly but got a waiter we had not seen before and the service was absolutely terrible. Fresh rolls are usually delivered immediately upon taking the drink order but we had to ask for them 3 times. They finally arrived after we had started in the entree.
The she crab soup was delicious as usual.
I had asked for coffee and water to be delivered with the entree. Another waiter delivered the entrees and asked if there was anything we needed and I said water and coffee. I did not see either waiter for about 10 minutes. I had almost eaten my entire entree with nothing to drink before our waiter showed up and he asked how everything was . We told him we had never gotten bread and I had never received anything to drink.
A few minutes later he arrived with the rolls, water and coffee but no cream. I requested cream and he said there was none. I wondered I he really could be telling the truth as it was only 6 o'clock in the evening. He said he would go look again as I said coffee without cream was not acceptable. A few minutes later he returned with half and half in a little plastic container (The same container our butter was in with the rolls) all other tables had coffee creamer in silver creamers ! (At that point I did not have any patience to tell him that half and half IS coffee creamer. I just let it go.
As to the food, my husband ordered short ribs. He said they were nearly all fat. He had just had this during Restaurnat week and loved them!
I got fillet and lobster and the fillet was delicious but I thought the lobster was a bit tough.
The waiter ruined a lovely celebration for us. We will give Shadwells another chance but I hope they have given this waiter his walking papers.
So disappointed we had reservation still waited 30 minutes and then were asked if we minded sitting in the bar. Waiter was terrible - annoyed with his job for sure. Very disappointed
Took my wife there for Valentine's Day. We had dined at Shadwells before and always enjoyed the meals. The selection is great and the service is always good.
We are two senior retired professionals who have dined at shadwell s many times in the past. valentine day is always a special occasion for us .we had made reservations nearly two weeks in advance. We arrived 15 min earlyTravis the manager warmly greeted us .I immediately noticed at least two booths vacant in the back first aisle i asked the hostess to have a booth , for two reason , intimacy and more important comfort since I’ve had a hip operation . Two couples app 5 min and 10 min later arrived for the same time 5 pm
we were all asked if we could wait until 5 pm . When the time came the hostess brought us to a table when again I asked about the booth she just walked away .the party that was the latest arriving got the booth on the left .several min utes later a another couple were seated in the right booth app 505 pm .my lady didn’t want to make a big deal or did I . Ihad to use the rest room. When I came back two other couples were seated next and behind us it was now approaching 515 pm we sat there for at least another 5 min or so during all this time not one waiter approached us we left at app 522pm to say we were humiliated but more important embarassed

The seasonal Rockfish with the blue crab grits were terrific. Kudos to the chef! Highly recommend. We will be coming back with friends.
Had a great dinner with friends. Food & service were top notch. Fortunately we were seated in a side room where it was more quiet. The main dining room always seems noisy. Will return !!
