Shadwells Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Wonderful dining experience. The steak was cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. The fudge brownie sundae was a great ending - it was so light and delicious. Our server was friendly and timed all courses fantastic. Absolutely great meal. We’ll be back again.
7 of my friends went to the restaurant to celebrate a birthday. There was a pretty good selection on the menu to choose from. The service was very good. The food was very good. The portions very generous. The pecan crusted chicken was really good, the steak was cooked perfect and the oysters seemed to be a big hit at our table. One of us ordered the undercover cosmo. It was terrible . Tasted like a watered down drink with something missing. The waitress was very kind to bring drink back and exchange for something different. The Blood Orange cosmo which was really good Not a big selection of wine. The ambiance was kind of drab. I think if you were just going out to eat this would be fine, but it would have been a little nicer to be in a place that was not so casual and plain for a birthday celebration.
Good family friendly restaurant. Large space, with booths for six and tables for four. Privet rooms for large groups. Service is great, very informed and attentive.
Food is generally good, with seasonal, local specials. Crabcakes, steaks, shrimp, pasta, oysters and very good bread. If you stick to basics all will be fine.
They have a very good bar, with a good selection of wines, beers & spirits. If you're in a hurry be sure to let them know, it can be hard to get your bill settled if your running late. Good if you can't get into your first choice at the last minute, or not dressed and hungry.
We decided to eat an early dinner traveling home from Christmas with Family, and found Shadwells.
While billed as a seafood restaurant, there were just as many chicken, beef and pork items. Menu was quite varied anywhere from light fare to a nice hearty dinner. The food was very good, albiet a bit pricey. Dinner for 2 with a soup and 2 teas was $75. Mr. had a steak with broccoli as his side, and I had crab cakes with mashed potatoes. Both dinners came with a salad included. Mr. had a garden and I the Caesar. The crab cakes had zero filler, literally zero filler. So, they fell apart, which is just fine with me. They were really good. We were not offered dessert but we were full anyway.
The restaurant was so cold that we never took our coats off. That was my biggest complaint. Mr sometimes ran out of hot tea and it took a few minutes to get the waiter. The restaurant was no where near full at 5:30 so we don't think it was that.
All in all it was a good meal. I would eat there again.
We made 7:30 reservations on Christmas Eve. On our arrival the host station was empty we waited 10 minutes for the host to arrive. He told us there would be a 35 minute wait. That is on top of our already 10 minute wait. I reminded him of our reservations, he responded with a sneer saying they had over 300 reservations. Incredulous I asked, so you overbooked? He responded with an eye roll, looks that way and left the station. Every time he returned he would glare at me or roll his eyes. Dressed in a striped tshirt he was very unprofessional. We found neighbors who had already been there 35 minutes for their 7:15 reservation. They were seated about 5-10 minutes later. At 8 another party inquired about their 7:30 reservations and were rudely informed they were waiting for a table. We got out our phones, found another restaurant, left and had a lovely dinner.
Arrived on time for reservation and was told there was a 20 minute wait. Waited for 20 minutes and then walked out. On the way out met a couple who had been waiting 45 minutes past their reservation time. It seems like the restaurant does not adhere to reservations. Also, the host was rude, never smiled, dressed unprofessionally, and definitely did not make a good first impression.
Staff was very friendly, but clearly overwhelmed with the Christmas Eve dinner crowd. Even though we had a reservation, we were told there would be a 20 minute wait beyond our reservation time. Once we were seated and our order taken, it was another 20+ minutes just to get salad and drinks. Food was okay, but nothing special. The place was more casual and a lot noisier than We were expectIng. Staff was very apologetic for the wait, but I don’t know that we’ll go back-maybe we’ll try them on a slow weekday for lunch
Had a 6:30 reservation....greeter said it would be about 15-20 minutes wait....I questioned why since we had a 6:30 reservation....he said everyone here (there were about 20 people in the waiting area) had a 6:30 reservation....I made a comment about this sounding like over-booking....no response.....we were finally seated at 7:00 (after a 30 minute wait)....so we are seated, but no server came to our table....others seated after us were being waited on....so after being patient for 15 more minutes, I flagged down a server and told him we would like service.....from here on the story gets positive....the server apologized, took our order right away, and the food was terrific. So...a 45 minute wait which is very unacceptable, followed by great food....does that balance out?....not in my book!
We met family that lives in Stuart's draft. We drove from Mathews to have a pre Christmas lunch as we woukdnt b together on Christmas. Food outstanding. Our waitress was just moved here from Colorado. She was beyond awesome. The she crab soup was the best I've ever had and I live on the Chesapeake Bay. Willb back!
This was the worst dining experience I can remember. The only thing I got in a decent amount of time was the appetizers and drinks. The salads took for ever to be brought out. The straw that broke the camels back was my dinner taking 1.5 hrs to be delivered. To top it off, my wife ordered her steak well done and received it basically medium rare. We left at this point. The only decent thing about the experience was the waitress. I could tell it really bothered her and she continuously apologized, unlike any manager of the place although it was brought to the hostess attention. The problem was that a party of about 30 took priority over a party of two. It sure appeared they were receiving excellent service though. I will never go back to this poorly run establishment and hope this discourages others. I will certainly discourage everybody I know.
Setting was just what we wanted, for 3 couples. Food was fantastic!!! We drove from Orange and the other 2 couples drove from Mechanicsville, worth the drive! Friends getting together enjoying the atmosphere, food and friendship. Will will return!!!! Employees were excellent!
The service at this restaurant was horrendous! We must have waited about an hour for our food. I watched entire parties come in, be seated, eat, pay, and leave before we got our food. At the end of the meal, we found that our checks already had 20% gratuity included. I can't help but feel as though we were passed over because that was the case.
Very disappointed in the Thanksgiving meal. We had been to Shadwells on several occasions and really enjoyed it. So much that we recommended to others. Invited our niece to Thanksgiving there. We both drove an hour to meet at the restaurant.
It was so disappointing. Over salty turkey roll, and nothing else was very edible.
Not sure we will be back.
By the way, two of the sides were mac and cheese and deviled eggs???? Also asked for extra cranberry sauce and was refusd because they only had enough for the dinners reserved?
We always enjoy Oystravaganza but this year was the worst meal we’ve had at Shadwells. The Oysters Rockefeller were over cooked to the point of being burned and our waitress never came back to check to see how the food was until time for the bill! Gave us 20% off but we will think twice before dining here again.
I made a reservation for 8 for a special birthday celebration for 3 people. I made note of this when I made the reservation . They did not recognize the birthdays, offer ANY kind of birthday dessert etc. I was so disappointed and embarrassed . The service was so slow. We were seated at 7:30 and did not get our dinner served until 9 pm. We will not be returning to Shadwells.
There were a few things that I did not like. The service was good but the timing in between courses felt rushed. We were not done with our appetizers before the main course came out, which then had to sit for a while. The broccoli with herb butter came out with no herb buttter. We sent it back and got another but it still had no herb butter. At this point we said, oh well!! The calamari was good but not the best we've had. Overall the place was ok. Would try it again and be more specific with what we want.
Very friendly staff, the atmosphere was nice and they had televisions broadcasting different football games. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable and attentive to refilling our glasses and bringing out our food. The menu had a lot to choose from and it made our selection hard. We choose the crab cakes and burger and the fish tacos and pecan encrusted chicken. Every dish came out piping hot and excellent. All of the side dishes were great the macaroni and cheese was perfect. We would recommend this restaurant again and again.
