About Shadow Boxers
During Prohibition Shadow Boxers was a speakeasy; a place for writers, artists and journalists to gather and discuss their next concepts and creative endeavors. This former speakeasy re-opened in December as a sophisticated restaurant/bar/lounge with a private event space downstairs behind black curtains, reminiscent of the Prohibition era. Shadow Boxers is located at 215 West 40th (40th St. between 7th and 8th avenue) nestled between the lights of Broadway and the corporate offices of The New York Times and Ernst & Young. With an energetic and a friendly work environment, Shadow Boxers is a favorite for the happy hour crowd and we have now extended service with our Brunch & A Movie and Dinner & A Movie events every Sunday.

Shadow Boxers Ratings and Reviews
We found this place via Opentable, and while it said "Bar/restaurant" I think I thought there would be a little more restaurant than bar based on the menu. A little startled when we open the door as the bouncer asked "are these your daughters?" pointing to my girls. Once we assured him they were with us, we were sat nicely in the far corner, which was perfect for us. Did not expect large screens showing the latest in music videos...but I have teenagers, so they loved it. The food was quick, which was great as we had a show to catch, and everything was surprisingly fantastic. The sliders were truly tasty! As the after work crowd shuffled in, we quickly excited to the astounded onlookers asking in their minds "who would bring kids here???" My wife and I were disappointed that we couldn't return later in the evening for an adult bar scene.
I made a reservation for 8 on Open Table. Everything was confirmed. When I got there, 5 minutes before our reservation time, I was told they were having a private event and that my reservation was basically worthless. I had to do some last minute planning for a party of 8 at 6pm on a workday in Midtown. Not ideal. Really disappointing.
First time visit. Went for lunch with a work colleague on a cold winter day, so did not expect a vibrant atmosphere. We experienced pedestrian fare in a somewhat cavernous venue with an ambient temperature that was too low for comfort (we kept our coats one). The staff was welcoming and competent, but even though there are not a ton of good lunch options in the neighborhood, there are enough better ones that I would not go back for that. Perhaps the after-work scene is better, but I would go for the drinks, not the food.
As an aside, the pool table tilts wildly to the west.
Loved the drag brunch! Food was delicious and the Queens were, fun, vibrant, chatty, and attentive. The space needs to work out a few kinks performance wise (the girls were phenomal just maybe some lights to help me out). Music was a tad loud during the dining but worked well for the show experience. They even had a coloring page while we waited which made things fun. Easy to find, easy to book, take walk ins, and a great show. I recommend this to all NY brunchers.
The bar was a great space and I'm looking forward to going there for some nightlife as well.
We took a chance on a place we had never heard of and came out impressed and planning a revisit. While the food is simple, it was all excellent. Great burgers, nice selection of salads and super sandwiches all in a casual, upbeat atmosphere. It offers high top tables as well as booths so you can pick your setting. It is very affordable which is also a draw and allows you to relax & enjoy and not worry about the bill.
