Severn Inn Ratings and Reviews
We visit Severn inn once a week during spring summer and fall.
Summer always has the same problems
Not enough help in the kitchen.
Our dinner took 2 Hours and 15 minutes to come to the table.
Drinks took 38 minutes to come to the table.
And then another 30 minutes for second drinks.
And the bar was empty.
We spoke with a manager who while very nice
Simply agreed with us that it is a continuous problem.
We love the views, the staff is warm and friendly but the service issues continue to haunt this restaurant.
We sat outside and enjoyed the evening catching up with friends we hadn't seen in awhile. The server gave us lots of space to take our time but was very attentive and was professional. The food was outstanding! Very fresh! The ambiance was perfect for a summer evening.
The best part of the experience is the view across the Severn River at the US Navel Academy. From there it starts to go downhill. The restaurant has a limited menu and as such you would expect each item to be outstanding. Unfortunately our team experience fell short. The entries are very expensive compared with other restaurants in the area. Again, if the quality of food were there this would not be a problem.
My wife got the grilled salad and I got the cream of crab soup. The salad was not good and the seasoning was not very tasty. The crab soup was very good with generous lump crab meat. The waiter did not offer pepper and we had to request salt and pepper shakers for the table.
The main courses were very disappointing. The crab cakes were mostly filler and my Wahoo can only be described as eating dried out chicken. With so few choices you would expect the dishes to be expertly prepared. To say the least the overall experience did not encourage me to want to come back for another visit.
If you are going here for Sunday brunch and primarily planning on eating seafood, think about it. The shrimp were good, the lox on cucumber was tasty but the portions were the size of a nickel and the Oysters were pathetic. They were tiny, almost non-existent. I've easily had bigger oysters from a BumbleBee can.
The free drinks are mostly watered down (not surprising since they are included). They offer NO flexibility in drinks or cook to order eggs. For example, you cannot change the Vodka in the bloody mary, even for an upcharge. And although you can order an omelette with a wide variety of fillings, you cant modify the eggs benedict. This makes no sense as the egg dishes are cooked to order in the kitchen.
The hot food was average except for the fruit & pudding laden french toast and oriental stir fry which we quite good. The deserts were on the whole excellent, but not worth the price of the brunch alone.
Server was slow although they were not that busy. Finally, if you split the check, the suggested tip on both bills is for the full amount, not half. So if you are not careful, you can easily tip 30 or 40%. Especially excessive since the server doesn't do much besides bring you an occasional drink and clear the plates.
We were disappointed with our crab cakes this time. In the past, the SI crab cakes have had almost no filler, but that has changed. This time, there was quite a lot of filler and the price was still as high as before. I ordered a grilled romaine Caesar salad- the dressing tasted nothing like Caesar dressing and there was a wad of coleslaw on top of the romaine. It was not what I expected given the name. My husband's watermelon salad was good, however. We have often dined here in the past but will need to see if this was an off night, or if things are changing.
Just surreal dining scene -- I never want to go to a place twice when on vacation, but this place I did. Between the bridge, the water, the naval academy and the bugling at sunset, they could have brought me deep friend chicken nuggets and I would have been happy. However, the crabcake special was generously portioned and delicious. We shared a great appetizer while watching the boats. Don't miss this one -- and it's a sharp left turn at the base of the bridge so it's easy to do so.
This was my first time at the Severn Inn, and the occasion was a Sunday brunch on my mother's birthday.
The family loved this place. The food was excellent, the atmosphere quiet and friendly, the staff attentive and very helpful.
With just this one visit, the Severn Inn has earned a very high opinion in my family.
The menu on Wednesday, 7/5, for dinner was limited and inflexible but I was informed that it was so due to the crowd expected for the July 4th celebratory fireworks display that evening. Nevertheless, the value was less than I was expecting or received. The atmosphere and view from the dining room was superb. I drove from Rockville, MD and it was worth the trip.
We love going to the Severn Inn. Not only is the food outstanding but the service is wonderful and the view is spectacular. It was a hot and muggy day so what a treat to walk inside and feel the AC. In short order we had cooled off and enjoyed a wonderful dinner.
Not much to say about the food since all 4 of us ordered the crab cakes. But they are delicious and there is no filler. They come with a refreshing corn side that is really a mix of vegetables and fried green tomatos. We ordered sauteed mushrooms and jalapeno mac and cheese. Both fit perfectly.
One piece of cheesecake to split was the ideal finish.
Service was great as was the Hobbs Pinot Noir.
We had to move inside due to rain, the staff handled it without problem.
Great location, view, and décor. Unfortunately the food did not match. Limited selection, mostly tasteless and service was adequate. Crab soup had no taste, deserts were what I make at home and I do not cook. Entrees were better, but mediocre. Seems like a waste of a great location with more potential than is being utilized.
Outstanding in all categories!! Beautiful view looking across the river at the Naval Academy. Sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful day and the view. Service was prompt and excellent. The food was very good and highlighted the local specialties. Loved the crab cakes.
Lovely lunch on the deck, with a very nice waitress who laughed with us and was helpful. My only negative comment about the food I had is that the crab cake was more what I would call a crab fluff or crab souffle...seemed to have some sort of eggy filling. It was also very small. But, still at Severn Inn you are paying for the beautiful view and pretty good (but not excellent, in my opinion) food. They do have a new binder with all of their wines, beers and liquor which is a nice addition (no prices for liquor, however...interesting). We enjoyed our time there and will return.
Our server was Hillary and she was prompt, friendly, and efficient. At 5 pm, the outside deck was full, but the indoor restaurant only had two couples, so it was quiet enough for a date to have a conversation. There was no wait and we were served quickly. The food was good, but the menu didn't reflect the one online. Note that the lunch menu is almost identical to the dinner menu, but the prices double for dinner. I had the seared yellowfin tuna, medium rare and it was delicious. However, they put the coleslaw over top of my tuna, which was not appreciated. Drinks were refilled in a timely fashion. The young man refilling the water, was pouring it all over the floor and table. I have been here before and had the crab cake dinner. The crab cakes are bigger and better at the G & M. You cannot beat the scenic view of the Naval Academy, across the water. After dinner, we walked along the beach at the park adjacent to the restaurant. This restaurant has prices that are obscene, when compared with the food. As we drove away, the stench of their dumpster was over powering and made us both gag, something the management should look into. A bad ending to a good dinner. I would recommend the Severn Inn to friends and family, with the suggestion to eat inside, away from the smell of the dumpster, and to bring lots of cash.
