Serratto Ratings and Reviews
We had a tired child with us and the waitperson was not very accommodating or friendly. Maybe she was having an off night or not in the mood to accommodate a 6 year old - but since it was my birthday celebration I had hoped for a more pleasant, understanding wait person.
Serratto is usually a very good restaurant. This time we had a very awkward table near a door in the back. The restaurant was very noisy. The food was so-so, well below their standards. I think they have an off night. The wine was good though. I won't give up on them just yet.
This old time restaurant was a landmark and outstanding establishment. The last visits have become more dismay. The menu is tired and the presentation sloppy . I suspect it is surviving on past glories. I judge restaurants on their scallops. I ordered the scallops. Ordinary at best. My wife's fish stew was almost deplete of fish, and what was served were small indescribable mystery fish and a limited amount shell fish.
Sad to state we will not return. There so many better restaurants. In Portland .
I wished they didn't put grapefruit sections in the Kobe Beef Steak. Should've kept the pecans or however it was at first. Asked for an extra side of dressing, and didn't get it. Didn't ask again, either. Nothing special for my boss' birthday, which I mentioned in the reservation either. Which is a bit cheap in itself. And that lamb/beef stew - was not the business. A spoonful of dry meat soup - no uncuousness to it, a disappointment.
Location, atmosphere, wine list and service was good as usual. This is a traditional favorite place. However, the food was lacking this time. Could have been a one off. But the fries were completely limp, the dressing on the steak salad was watery and tasteless, and the daily pizza was lacking meat and bland. More than one dish was lacking so that was concerning. However, we will give it another try and hope the food is back up to previous standards!
We have gone to Serratos for years, but the last two times have not been up to their usually standard, something or someone has changed. The kale salad (a favorite) was underdressed and tough without the usually tart apple in it, the pasta not quite cooked. They used to do a very clever fruit plate for the kids, but recently it has been pretty lame. Also the menu does not change much. It breaks my heart to lose the quality at this favorite neighborhood spot.
Serratto is a wonderful combination of reliable, reasonable and still interesting. I also appreciate wine options that are less than $12 a glass. Great pastas always. It also is quieter than some competitors, which to me means I can have a conversation with the person across the table without straining my voice and hearing. Our server this visit was either overworked, under-trained or disengaged, which is not the usual excellent care we get at Serratto. Hence the low mark on service. Only other gripe is in their effort to emulate Italy(?) they have some chairs that nobody finds comfortable. Maybe they want to keep us from lingering after we finish?
I downgraded the service, food, and overall rating because I returned to the restaurant on Wed 4/26/17 at 11:30 am for lunch with my office. We were on break from a seminar but had made a reservation in advance. We had a group of 10 and requested separate checks. After the waitress took our drink order, I went to use the bathroom. On my way back to the table, 2 waitresses and a 3rd female, I think the hostess, were commenting loudly and laughing about how tacky it was for us to request separate checks as they stood around the bar area. Mind you, my lunch alone was over $50 and I did leave extra tip on top of the automatically added tip against better judgment. The food is usually really good but this time my pizza was charred black underneath. I didn't have time to send it back for a replacement so I ate what I could. I raved about this place to my staff and in the end it was just OK for lunch. I will think twice about returning with those catty waitresses talking behind our backs. It still irritates me that we paid good money and were ridiculed like that.
We loved Serratto. Everyone was thrilled with his dining choices from the fabulous ahi tuna tartare to the main courses which showed off the best of fresh fish. The halibut, bouillabaisse, and scallops all won raves. The wine list offers so many wonderful pairing choices. Tony was an exceptional waiter who knew how to read the table's needs and had great comments to help answer every question. Great evening.
