About Seres Restaurant and Bar

Seres Restaurant in Portland’s Pearl District is a modern, sustainable interpretation of classic American Chinese cuisine. Everything from ingredients to practices follows a commitment to the health of diners as well as the planet.

In addition to using primarily locally farmed produce, Seres grows some of their own vegetables and garnishes. Seres' dishes feature meats raised with no hormones and no antibiotics, sustainably caught or sustainably raised seafood, and bean curd from Portland’s own OTA Tofu Company.

Essentially, you will still find every traditional long-loved Chinese food like fried rice, dumplings, or Kung Pao at Seres, however with a lightness and purity that is not only delicious but also important.

I've always really liked the food at Seres Restaurant but the service has been hit-or-miss. This time we went the waitress didn't pull my friend's soda even though he asked her to as it was flat and tasted terrible. Our waters weren't refilled in a timely manner and she even whacked one of my friends with her plate. She was slow to take our orders and even slower to cash us out at the end which was a problem because we were on our lunch breaks and had told her we needed to get going. There were only two other two-person tables in use there so I'm not sure why she had to spend so much time in the back with the chefs.
The moment was sort-of saved when they brought my friend a scoop of ice cream for her birthday but it didn't really make up for being neglected almost the whole meal. If you come here, it's usually better to call ahead with your order even if you're eating in.

Typical over oiled and over sauced, under flavored Chinese food. Which is fine if a typical setting. Go upscale then expect better treatment if food. Place was near empty but service was average. Few would complain with food at $10-12 but charging $14-20 makes expectations rise too. Nice looking place, good spot. There's potential here

This was our second trip to Seres. Both times, the food has been very good. Noise level will just depend on how full the restaurant is. Wonderful variety of dishes, and everything we have tried has been well prepared. We appreciate the elegant atmosphere of this restaurant. It's not gaudy. Only downside: I ordered coffee at the end of the meal; would definitely finish the meal with tea rather than coffee next time.

I loved Seres. The staff was very friendly. I had vege chow mein and shared pot stickers. The red chili sauce was excellent, not too hot. We all shared a big portion of the corn, crab and chicken (chowder?) soup. Excellent. The atmosphere is clean and modern. Parking was very easy as well. Lovejoy is not overally crowded.

Some of the best food in Portland. Mostly organic, gluten-free, GMO free, free range chicken & meat, and delicious. Very affordable & we never have to wait for a table, even on a Saturday night.

Very disappointing! I returned to Seres to repeat my previous experience and was surprised by the boring tasting food and over cooked vegetables. So sad!

Best Chinese food in Portland. The Sesame Beef is amazing! So is the General Tso's chicken. I haven't eaten Chinese food in a long time, mostly because a lot of Chinese restaurants don't have the highest quality ingredients. Seres was very impressive, I will be coming back for sure.

We found the restaurant on open table. The description sounded good. We researched it on Yelp. Pretty good reviews. We are from out of town and were able to find it easily and able to park by the door. There were only a few other diners which was a surprise since it had such good reviews. Maybe because we are from Houston and we have so many outstanding Chinese restaurants I found the food just average or perhaps we just ordered the wrong menu items. Anyway the food was good and nothing was really wrong.

Non-traditional Chinese place. More like a modern fusion restaurant, but with Chinese cuisine presented in high style.

If anyone can tell me a better Chinese restaurant in PDX, I'd love to go there. Have tried all the dim sum and big place on the east side and Departure downtown. None have the variety, freshness, or taste of the food at Seres. Jim always takes great care of us and even makes a few recommendations. The Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp is fabulous. Have never been disappointed. You won't be either. Kudos, Seres! Again!

We had a large party and the restaurant had last minute availability, so we were grateful for the reservation. Unfortunately, the seafood quality was poor. My parents barely ate their scallops, and I couldn't eat more than one bite of the shrimp with tangy sauce. The veggie dishes were good, but to have stinky, soggy seafood on the west coast (at these prices) is unacceptable.

The service, ambiance (background piano music was soothing), modern decor was all great -- but the real star of the show was the food. We had a group with vegans, vegetarians, omnivores, and some with peanut allergies. The menu layout was nice and made it easy to sort out our dietary restrictions. The Ma Po Bean Curd was delicious. The tofu was excellent, very fresh-tasting, and cut to just the perfect size. The General Tso's chicken was a big hit among the omnivores -- not an overly sweet sauce and the chicken was tender, high-quality meat. We would return!

We were in the mood for some Chinese food, after a long period of going without, and Seres came through beautifully. Excellent food, attentive but unobtrusive service, pleasant surroundings. I rate it as quiet, but we were there early and there were only a few other patrons. That was fine with us. We look forward to going back.

Leisurely, Well Paced, and Very Good!
My husband and I enjoyed date night cocktails (mmm Mandarin Cosmo) and potstickers followed by Mu Shu Pork and Kung Pao Chicken. The cosmo was deliciously citrus with orange and lime notes along with the traditional cranberry juice. Maybe it was the Mandarin vodka. The potstickers were a little doughy but tasty. The mu shu was a lovely traditional presentation...with flaming hoisin!? The kung pao was good and spicy and we took home enough for another meal. The ckeck was presented with a complimentary sliced canteloupe wedge. Very nice! We've added it to our favorites list!

We love Seres. The food is always cooked to order, is very fresh, and portions are generous. The presentation is beautiful--all of our plates were picture oerfect.
The wait staff is very attentive and friendly.
It's a but pricey for weekend lunch as the lunch menu is only good Monday through Friday. But it's worth it!

Lovely Ladies Lunch
Nice hum of mostly business folks. We had reservations so had a wonderful booth with linen tablecloths reserved for us. Food (kung pao chicken and flank steak) was very tasty if a little sweet. Mu shu pork was perfection and nicely served and presented.

I'm taking my husband back next week!
