Sel et Poivre Restaurant
The menus are elegant, yet not overdone. Appetizers include terrine de foie gras with red wine grapes, mussels marinière or à la provençale with French fries, and of course, an exceptional French onion soup that should not be missed. Dinner entrées include classic French items such as frog's legs in Pernod sauce and duck à l’orange with wild rice, plus items such as pan-seared chicken breast served with wild mushroom sauce and mixed vegetables, a bistro burger with French fries, and thin-sliced steak frites and salad. Of course if you're ready to indulge, they also feature a filet mignon in a red wine shallot sauce with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and an aged New York sirloin steak with Roquefort or poivre sauce.
Perfect neighborhood restaurant
It was only the second visit but my wife and I were greeted like we were regulars
I had the Duck and my wife had the Chicken Paillard both outstanding We treated ourselves to a nice bottle ofChablis
A really enjoyable Monday night dinner
Service was just what it should be,friendly and efficient
We will be regulars
Fabulous Niçoise salad—loved it. Great zucchini soup and wonderful cappuccino. Highly recommend for lunch!
Warm, cozy atmosphere; welcoming and polished service; great menu selection and food was delicious. Prix fixe lunch was perfect from the paté to the grilled salmon to the dessert crepe. This is a place to go to again and again.
Wait staff was very kind!
Kidneys in mustard sauce is not everyone's idea of summer dining, BUT I know of no other
restaurant which pulls off this French classic with such success. My wife and I had an early 2-glass rosé dinner before dashing through rain drops to the Park Avenue Armory for an adapted production of Ibsen's 'Enemy of the People'. She had a perfectly cooked roasted salmon. Conversing with the owner, Christian, is always fun. On this particular evening, he recounted the nightmares of surviving Covid as a restauranteur. Sel et Poivre is a gem of a bistro. Go once and you will return many times. Tell Christian that Dimitri sent you.
Fantastic service and good food served by really lovely staff and owners.
I was very disappointed in the “special” : coq au vin which you would expect to be excellent at a French restaurant. It was dry and not very well seasoned.
The first course (a tart) on the other hand was quite good.
Sel et Poivre has been at the top of Manhattan bistro authenticity and excellence for decades. Emerging from Covid, the menu is exquisite and the staff is amiable, attentive and always at your service. Sel et Poivre is a gem.
Excellent food, service and ambiance - as usual.
Our “go to” every visit to NYC
A resturant with good food, excellent location and good service AND the check will not kill You! that's a nice combination. Give it a try!!
A wonderful lunch or dinner spot..fabulous french cuisine the old style way.
Sel et Poivre is one of our most beloved neighborhood restaurants and we are more than delighted that it has survived Covid's enormous challenges without sacrificing its excellent food, cozy atmosphere and, above all, the kindness of its owners and staff -- whom we know well after many years' time.
excellent all around, will be back
Friendly French restaurant featuring many of my favorite indigenous menu choices (escargot, calves' liver, etc.). Abbreviated wine list appropriately priced.
Pre mother’s day
Efficient, pleasant service. Consistently good cuisine
I've been here many times and it is always a fabulous meal and experience
Was looking forward to our meal. Dinner was fair (both entrees) and pretty disappointing.
Dear Cupcake; Thank you for your review. we apologize for your disappointment. All reviews we look into and helps us learn to improve. We do hope you give us an other chance. Thank You sincerely Sel et Poivre , Pamela
The meal as always is quite good , well prepared and never disappointing. Service friendly and welcoming. I will be back shortly- I can recommend this establishment
Our food was delicious and the service was great!!
This is a lovely small restaurant - very homey with great - if not innovative - food.
A charming bistro with friendly service and delicious food. The owners are warm and welcoming. It should not be a hidden gem but a visible one.
I was hoping for a COVID-19 pick me up lunchtime and this wasn’t it!!
dear Vince; My deepest sorrow that Sel did not pick you up. It has been a difficult time for all of us and we try our hardest to please and and be in happy spirits to all. We do hope you give us an other try because things are going to get better. thank you sincerily Pamela
The food was excellent and the service very good. However, eating outside was not pleasant, as it was quite cold, and they did not have sufficient/strong heaters.
As always simply delicious and great martinis , always a favorite
They serve sweetbreads every Wednesday. Outstanding. They set up barriers between dining tables. Very safe
Superbly prepared French fare. Attentive staff and even owner came to chat and check in. Quiet vibe. No one rushed me. Can't wait to return!
EAting outside is a challenge with cars whizzing by, but the restaurant set up a pleasant place. The service is excellent as are many of the dishes, particularly the sirloin steak and veal kidneys. The menu is good standard fare with the crab cake, foie gras, trout, burger, and calf's liver being above average.
The food is consistent and during the week, wine is 1/2 price, which is a great bargain.
thank you for your support. we truly appreciate it. sel et poivre
We have dined there on several occasions & everything was wonderful. This time, food order was wrong, no bread offered at all, drinks were warm. Better luck next time I hope
I've been coming to Sel et Poivre for years. The ambiance is warm and cozy, the waiters are attentive and the food is good. I never feel rushed, throughout the meal or at the end of the meal. The prices are good and so is the food.
The duck and salmon were delicious. The space is small and crowded. A few tables should be removed. Avoid going early, the regular crowd is elderly and takes the best tables.
Coming from France, I was exited about trying this place. The atmospheres okay but the food is really bad :(
Dear Eliot: We are sorry to hear your experience at our establishment was not to your liking. This is a concern to me and will talk to my chef and staff of what happen the night you had dined there. Every review helps us correct what we need to do to make sure our food is enjoyable to all. Thank you for your review and we do hope you give us an other try. Sel et Poivre
Be sure to order something you know will be fresh--like fish, which was delicious, But the duck was ancient, dry and tasteless and quite expensive $35.95 compared to the rest of the menu.
DEAR jOHN; Thank you for your review we appreciate your information. The duck is a popular dish which sells fast. we appoligize you were not satisfied with yours. we will look into the matter . Happy you had enjoyed the rest of your meal. Thank you and hope to see you again . sincerely Sel et Poivre
QUALIFIED REVIEW- IF YOU AREIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND DON'T WANT TO EAT AT THE OTHER 2 DOR 3 RESTAURANTS NEARBY, THEN THIS IS A GOOD CHOCIE. FOOD IS OK, NOT GREAT, BUT CERTAINLY ACCEPTABLE. WINE WAS GOOD!
Dear MandE: Thank you for your review , iam glad you thought our restaurant is acceptable, and would love to see you back again . Sincerely Sel et Poivre
Great meal and excellent wine! Nice evening and I never felt rushed.
Thank You AnneH for your review. We very much appreciate it. Sel et Poivre
Great neighborhood old school french restaurant.
A favorite spot for lunch or dinner, this has become our favorite in the neighborhood. great ambiance and service...
Every time I come in to the restaurant, the prices increase. The meals are so expensive that by the time you get an entree and a glass of wine, and with gratuity, the bill is $65 - $75 for one person . Very out of line for a small neighborhood restaurant. It is so unaffordable that I have to cut back my visits and find a less expensive dining experience which is sad as I have always loved Sel et Poivre.
Dear Cooper; Unfortunately to operate a small neighborhood business has sky rocketed ; In the past year a tremendous amount of restaurants have closed there doors because they cant afford to operate ; Overhead tripled in cost. we don't want to lay off employees ; they depend on us .. We priced our menu with the same type of business around us. We appreciate when you can come .This Personally hurts me to loose customers. This is my life , my business., I hope we can survive; Thank you Pam
The food and the cocktails were superb. All four of us where very pleased with our meals and were not rushed.
