About Sears Fine Food
Sears Fine Food has a rich history, dating back to 1938. The restaurant works hard to preserve its history and tradition, presenting an atmosphere and cuisine that are just as classic as they were 70 years ago. Sears Fine Food is famous for its 18 Swedish pancakes, which are still made using the original family recipe brought over to the United States in the early 30s.
Enjoy delicious Swedish-inspired cuisine with an American twist for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Sears Fine Food. Dig into one of the restaurant's popular Blue Plate Specials, served from 5:00 p.m. onwards. Sears was recommended by my foodie daughter. We are from Australia and I was travelling with a friend so decided to check it out. Wonderful atmosphere, great service, great food and suitable wine list. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and were pleasantly surprised with the cost. Battered fish and chips was our choice.
Sear's was very convenient to our hotel near Union Square. Prices were reasonable for a nice dinner for the location. We ordered the Pt Reyes Fondue as a starter and it was EXCELLENT. A chunky blue cheese "dip" that was more cheese crumbles than anything else served with a fantastic dried cherry and Apricot chutney, roasted garlic and sour dough. WOW! I would go back for this alone. The rest of the meal was also excellent (we had the shortribs and Basa fillet special), as was the service. A totally pleasant meal.
Our second visit within a week had much better service. An earlier post noted excellent food but less than stellar service. On this visit, Eric was everything that excellent service is about - attentive, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and friendly. His service, coupled with wonderful preparations from the kitchen, made for a completely enjoyable evening. Sears Fine Food is simply a great place for a wonderful meal!
My wife and I were warmly greeted and seated at our reserved time. Our Blue Fondue appetizer was very different (in a good way) and tastey. Her salad and my soup and seafood pasta were excellent, both highlighting a passion for the culinary arts in the kitchen. What prevented a 5-star rating was the neglectful service. We were uncertain if our server was new, improperly trained (first course arrived before appetizer), wrestling with personal issues, overworked, or just plain indifferent. We were not greeted promptly, ice tea refills were non-existent, rarely checked with us, course out of order, and generally not available. We plan to revisit since food was excellent, but we'll try a different server.
I usually visit Sears Fine Food on my first night on a visit to San Francisco. If you have an event at Moscone, it's convenient to the many hotels in the area. The menu is wide, from burgers to pasta to fish to steaks. The servers are friendly, and service is quick; Eddie did a great job on my recent visit. The wine list isn't large but is reasonable. Overall it's a comfortable, solid restaurant, which is no doubt why it's been around so long.
Sears is a favorite of ours- a regular and consistent performer in the rich San Francisco food scene. We were in town with family members and took them for dinner at Sears. Did the reservation through OT and had no problems. Table ready and waiting upon arrival. Very small number of waiters served entire dining room- they were professional and efficient. Simple demand of large number of patrons created minor delays in food arrival but nothing objectionable. Waiters very helpful in making recommendations. Menu is varied and has something for everyone. This is a great choice for families or parties who have members less willing to try the more culturally diverse component of the SF food scene. We had several family members who do not care for Asian influenced dishes which is a real loss in SF. Sears has a very broad menu with choices for all. Food was very good- excellent and the evening was a pleasant success. Still my favorite meal at Sears is breakfast/brunch but a very fine meal and I/we will be back.
Our family is comprised of longtime SF and Marin County residents, yet somehow this was our first visit to Sears Fine Foods. I'm so glad we found it, everything was amazing. We definitely plan to come back.
The decor is outstanding, it's like a step back in time. Wonderful staff, amazing food and the best desserts ever.
We love going to Sears for breakfast and often will wait in line to get in because the breakfast is wonderful. We had never been there for dinner before but found ourselves in the area and said "Let's try it." So disappointed. The food was barely passable and yet still expensive and the waiter was just short of rude. Left a bad taste in our mouths in more ways than one.
We had a late lunch here. Bbq burger and grilled chicken sandwich. Both very tasty and delicious fries. The decor takes you back in time and service was excellent. Unfortunately they will not serve off the dinner
Menu until exactly 5. We arrived at 440 but were to hungry to wait the 20 mins for the dinner menu. The lunch sufficed. Order the bread and butter app. Yummy Boudin sourdough.
Up to date Nostalgia. The atmosphere and experience was reminiscent dining held to the highest standard. The atmosphere made me feel like a nice restaurant from Vito Corelone's hey day, the food was definitely up to the task of pleasing our tastes in the new melenium. It's gen Y appeal with your grand father's class. Don't miss this San Francisco secret.
We came here because of the Open Table reviews and we weren't disappointed. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing! I had what was probably one of the best sea bass meals I have ever had. My friends shared a tasty pasta dish and a pot roast which is one of the restaurants's specialties. Everyone left with smile on their face and a full stomach. We'll be back next time we're in San Francisco.
This is just north of Union Square on Powell. We found this by accident about 6 years ago, and have made it part of our Christmas in San Francisco tradition. Everything we've tried has been exceptional, and the staff, especially Semih (the world's greatest waiter!) is attentive, and their selection recommendations are always spot on. The last meal we ate there my wife had a New York steak, which was the best steak I've ever tasted in a restaurant. This is my favorite restaurant anywhere! Period, end of discussion.
We have eaten here for breakfast and lunch and it has been excellent. Dinner was not up to par.
We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation for four and the hostess was friendly and got us seated early in a good spot. There was a big line of walk ins. Our waiter was a "stiff" with no personality at all. This is a cloth napkin restaurant. We only had 2 table-settings in cloth. After we were seated the busboy brought a couple more with paper napkins. We asked our server for some more napkins and were given a stack of paper. We came for Union Square Shepherd's Pie which is listed on the website with a few other things as a special. Our stiff told us there were no specials, and no Shepherd's pie. No explanation. We were lured in by false advertising and had to pick something else. There is a small disclaimer on the website. The prime rib was excellent but I didn't think you could get a baked potato so small. I ordered a filet cooked medium. Good thing I like well done because that is how it was cooked. It was still tender with excellent flavor and a nice cut of meat. Green beans and mashed potato were also very good but small portions. Peppercorn gravy was fantastic. The pot roast was excellent. The pasta was just pasta. Average. The server never came back to check on us after the food was served. We had to flag him down to get horseradish and again to get another beer. We chose this place because of good experiences with breakfast and lunch. Next time we will choose another place for dinner.
For the last 20 years, my wife has always wanted to try this place out. They've only recently (2 years?) opened for dinner as well as being famous for their breakfast and lunch menu since 1938. The staff were attentive, (we changed waiter three times! -- all were great.) the ambiance lovely (the family portraits provide great ambiance, but be advised, the pictures came with the frames!), and from what I have heard, normally have a line down the block. The two pink Cadillacs "waiting room" are gone (probably a good thing--read the menu), and food excellent-although I should have ordered the lamb t-bone chops medium. She had a delicious San Francisco cioppino in white sauce (I know, sacrilege!) --also wonderful. Definitely try the blue fondu!
Weird bugs when trying to book the reservation for the place. Other than that the breakfast food was decent nothing to write too much home about. The omelettes were okay I've had better omelettes at other places like BayWatch. Pricey. Antiquey vibe.
Decent service, guy kept coming back to pour water.
I wish waitstaff would ask if we would like anything else for bringing the check rather than just simply plopping the check out which happens far too much at restaurants these days.
Hostess seemed clueless about how OpenTable works.
'This restaurant had great ambience, food, and service. I ordered the pot roast and the delivery was spectacular, not to mention the abundance of flavor. I would highly recommend this restaurant to all. It felt like I was in my own home and had a home-cooked meal.
Went with my wife and 10 year old granddaughter. We ordered Calamari for the table, it was fried and chewy and not good. We should have sent this and our granddaughter 's Fettuccine Alfredo as well as her Butterscotch pudding that she ordered for dessert back. Spent $100 for three people and it was not worth it. Food came out quickly but after that the service disappeared.
We waited 10 minutes for a table after I made a reservation. Kids were loud and playing with computer games. Some people dressed very casual in jeans. Our server was a little slow which is annoying because We were ready to order quick. Our food took a while. The food was absolutely amazing. Everyone loved their meal.
We ate here early on a Sunday night before theater. Stepping inside was like stepping back in time to old San Francisco, with the hex-tile floor, pictures on the wall, and lighting. The food and service were quite good and the prices reasonable. We had Mac and cheese with ham, good and not too salty; penne with vegetables and added shrimp, excellent; and fish and chips. The fries and slaw on the side were excellent. However, talapia is a mediocre fish. Traditional cod would be better. The Pinot I had was excellent. After dinner we were given a coin for a spin in the slot machine and won a nice prize. I can't promise that will happen next time, but I would go back again.
