During our last stay at the Inn By The Sea, my husband and I ate at the Sea Glass Restaurant three times (dinner, brunch, and breakfast). We enjoyed every meal we had. Our servers, particularly Faith, were friendly and accommodating. Our meal choices were delicious. The chef really understands textures and flavor combinations. If you are in the Cape Elizabeth area, I highly recommend dining here.
The parents and aunt and uncle of the bride had dinner the day after the wedding. It was a perfect setting for an elegant, lovely, and relaxing supper. We enjoyed our experience very much.
Food was terrible. Waitress offered to heat up "Eggs Benedict" when she was told the food was cold. Waitress had no experience. When the pre-fix menu has little to offer and the charge is $68 a person, then appetizer, main course and desert should be satisfactory.
The staff was great but the food was way overpriced. Unfortunately we were not seated in the dining room, I think the ambiance might have been a little better in there. I think we were in the banquet room and it felt very much like a hotel conference/banquet room.
We could only get an early RSVP for Mother’s Day at 7:45am and it worked out perfectly. The breakfast was great and the staff very attentive. The view was terrific and we will return, hopefully as guests of the Inn!
On our two last visits Sea Glass has demonstrated poor service. With reservations and only two parties in the dining room we had a 15 minute wait to be acknowleged and then to be told there would be an additional wait as none of the window seating requested were cleared and set yet.We were a party of 2. Service was very slow to pick up payment after being given check, 10 minutes with only one other table occupied. This staff needs help prioritizing. Very similar experience last Fall, however the restaurant was very busy that day and the situation although the same was more understandable.
The food was incredible! Best omelette and homefries I have ever had! I’m very picky about how my bacon is cooked and they cooked it perfectly. The server was attentive and friendly. Everything about Sea Glass was amazing. Definitely a special occasion type of meal, and so worth the extra money for an amazing meal!
Excellent service and food
The best of everything!
This is a lovely inn but the restaurant was very disappointing. The chicken dish, though recommended, was very bland and the scallop dish that was supposed to feature roasted tomatoes tasted more like tomato paste from a can. The menu is limited and there are not a lot of tables so maybe they just can't make it work. Stay at the inn but eat elsewhere.
I have just moved to the area and was looking for someplace to take my 89 year old parents for dinner. Navigating Portland can be tricky for them. I had read good reviews and had friends tell me it was a pretty location. The reality, however, was something else entirely. The food was dry and fairly tasteless, despite being overpriced and several attempts at "artsy" plating. While the service was very nice, it was also INCREDIBLY slow, especially for the price we were paying. Generally, the menu is fairly uncreative and decently bland and I felt like everyone came away disliking the food. While the view is decent, we couldn't help but feel deeply disappointed by our experience.
We visited in the offseason so I'm sure the experience would be different in the middle of the summer. There were only two other couples in the dining room while we were there for dinner and it was very quiet. The menu has limited options, but likely enough selection for any group. The stuffed shells with oxtail ragu were really delicious and a standout across the three courses we had at dinner.
We also ate breakfast there twice while staying at the inn. The service was spotty and the waitress both days was extremely loud and overbearing. It definitely took away from the serenity of the location. Prices for breakfast are well above average for the area and I was disappointed to see I was charged $4 for a cup of coffee when there's a free coffee service literally 10 feet from the dining room for guests. Portions are large and I imagine there is a lot of food waste at the restaurant. Overall, for the sake of convenience it's easy to eat at the restaurant if you are a guest at the inn. Otherwise, there are much better options in Portland to have a memorable and fantastic meal.
I have gone to the Inn By the Sea since it opened years ago. The view and the location and the staff are wonderful. They cannot get the food right. The Black Point Inn's Food is far superior. I lived in Cape E for 34 years even living at the old Cresent Beach Inn that burned to the ground where the present Inn stands. The old Inn's food won awards year after year in Maine.....I just do not get it.....why can't they present good food at The Inn by the Sea. I just had lunch with a friend that went there for her Thanksgiving dinner and agreed it was terrible. I too have had Thanksgiving there and my late Father's 80th Birthday there...lousy...sorry
My husband and I enjoyed the food as much as the view.
The food was excellent; the service was atrocious. Our server appeared very nervous and seemed befuddled by the basics: she didn't know if the bartender could make a very simple champagne cocktail, failed to bring bread despite promising to do so, had someone else deliver our meals and only reappeared when we were nearly done with our entrees to see if we were pleased with the food. As for the food, the lobster taco appetizer was delicious, if a bit under-seasoned. The seared scallops with shrimp couscous, and the filet mignon with smoked mushrooms and cauliflower, were extremely well prepared. Unfortunately, the poor quality service is the taste that lingered longest after our meal.
Overall very pleasant... good service, food and atmosphere
Beef Wellington was remarkable, blueberry martini delicious, Thanks for special night!
Excellent as always! One of my favorite restaurants in the area!
Amber was our waitress and she was terrific. Just the right level of service, attentive but not intrusive, and very pleasant.
Perfect for a small group to meet. Excellent food and service. Attentive but did not feel hurried.Staff very friendly.
Setting and staff great but food fell short of our expectations.
Beautiful setting, great food and service. Inn By the Sea never disappoints!
We found the food to be very good to excellent in presentation & taste. The arugula, roasted squash salad had a pleasant flavorful dressing but the squash was under cooked & not actually roasted. Everything else about the dinner food was excellent. We also had breakfast which was fantastic.
On another note, the evening service left a lot to be desired. The gentleman had the personality that was void of any inflection and the woman server gave the impression that she was there under duress. When questioned to describe two items on the menu (the Vegan choice & the Dogfish) a description had to be coaxed out of her. By no means did she try to describe in detail the dishes & the features of each. Disappointing. Her smile was completely fake. The am server was wonderful and pleasant.
Fantastic atmosphere, great food and wonderful service, thank you!
The let dogs eat in the restaurant where people were eating. I am a dog lover but this is not healthy.
We were married at Inn, so went back to Sea Glass for an anniversary dinner. Beautiful scenery, cozy, and quiet. The food and service was excellent, very seasonal. Impressive wine list and original cocktails. One thing to note, the entree portions are slightly on the smaller side.
Lovely place, great service and excellent presentations of food. The steak the first night was superb — the lobster poached in butter terrific. The clam chowder was sublime and silky comfort food! This review is for October 8.
Excellent quality. Relatively small menu choice but that makes for far superior quality. My husband and I shared the fish tacos apppetizer and the lobster entree. Fish tacos were delicious and lobster was fresh. We sat outside overlooking the bay in glorious sunshine. There was family nearby roasting marshmallows round the fire pit. After a walk on the beach our evening was complete. Worth every penny
I've been to Sea Glass many times, but this was my first visit for brunch. As expected, it was excellent!
A delightful, small restaurant at the Inn by the Sea. We had a lovely view of the ocean from our table. The menu is limited but the food was delicious and the service was great.
our most pleasant morning in Portland... breakfast was excellent, staff outstanding and the view spectacular. A hidden gem.
The service was horrible. It appeared that the waitress was new and had absolutely no experience in the job. She totally ignored us and there were only two tables occupied at the time (Sunday at noon). We had to ask two buss boys, on three occasions, to get our waitress for us.
Prices on the menu were different for the exact same menu item. We got 4 menus and two of them listed the lobster roll at $14, while the other two listed it at $28 -makes one wonder if they are being treated honestly and fairly..
All in all, this restaurant charges much to much for the poor service.
It appeared that the manager knew about the issues we were having with the false prices on the menu, but never approached us to apologize (and by the way, he should have told us that he would charge the lower price for the lobster roll if we wanted to order it.) That did not happen, and in a restaurant of this level, that should have been a given.
Our experience simply did not live up to what would normally be expected of a restaurant of this price level and rating.
Stayed at the Inn for two nights
Food and service was excellent both evenings
Great place to have lunch. Would definitely consider staying here for a few days. Love the idea of dogs from humane society
Not the greatest. I had their summer veggie special and it tasted burnt. Would not go back
We went to the Sea Glass to celebrate 2 birthdays and the service and food was great. The views were of the ocean and gardens were good.
Would not pull tables to heather so 7 could sit outside -- could have easily been done based on open tables
Hostess was terrible
Excellent lunch on the outside patio. Good, attentive, friendly service. Beautiful view of the ocean. Limited lunch menu but options are good and food quality was very good.
Nice to dine outside on the patio with views of the water. Very nice friendly service. Unfortunately the food was only so so in my opinion. The chowder was too creamy for my taste and the hake dish lacked flavor. Not horrible but could be better. We'll go back and try the Sunday brunch one day.
We generally avoid hotel/resort dining. But Sea Glass was excellent! Reserved again 2 nights from now.
