Scrimshaw Ratings and Reviews
Our greeting by the Hostess was pleasant and professional as she prepared us for a wonderful
dinner. The atmosphere was quiet and warm. Our server was very pleasant, displayed a good sense of humor and was very attentive. Our cocktails were delicious and we were given a relaxing amount of time to enjoy them. Now the food --- first the presentations were exciting and artistic and secondly
each course was very tastefully and professionally prepared and thirdly our intimate dinner was served timely in a professional manner. We truly enjoyed every aspect of our dinner at Scrimshaw.
My wife and I have eaten at Scrimshaw many times over the years and always had wonderful meals.
That was not the case at our last visit. We ordered the Chateaubriand for two. What a disappointment! Although the meat was cooked beautifully, there was very little in each portion. The fingerling potatoes seemed to be fried. They looked like three short, fat french fries and they were very greasy. The vegetables were tiny carrot balls in a cucumber cup. Looked cute but was not tasty. For $75 for this dinner for two, I expected more.
The other two couples who dined with us like their meals well enough but agreed that the quality was
not what it was on previous visits.
The food was as good as years past, but the service was exceedingly slow. I don't know if it was the fault of the server or the kitchen. I ordered oysters on the half shell right away. The server returned about 15 minutes later and told me they did not have oysters on the half shell. I asked if they had the Oysters Rockefeller. He went to check and returned sometime later to tell me they did...waiting, waiting, waiting...Oysters Rockefeller arrived. So were the Oysters Rockefeller frozen, or maybe the kitchen staff initially didn't want to open the oysters for my half shell order? The Oysters Rockefeller were amazing though. The Filet Mignon was done to perfection and as tender as could be. It took 2.5 hours from start to finish, with no dessert, and there were only about 6 tables occupied.
The dining experience was excellent overall and the food was outstanding. The booking website, however needs work. The earliest on-line reservation was 7pm which considering our 4:30 wake-up call was a bit late. After our arrival we had a cocktail in the bar and inquired with the bartender the possibility of getting a 5:30 reservation. After some checking she told me there were NO reservations for 5:30 and booked us that time slot.
My significant other and I celebrated his new job on November 21st. My, what a wonderful night we had. We were greeted by the friendly hostess/manager who made sure we were comfortable and sat us in the Panel Room. We got to listen to the beautiful pianist while we were taken care of by a wonderful server. We began with a champagne toast, and selected a couple wines off of the extensive wine menu. The food was beyond exceptional. I was especially blown away by the Chateaubriand for Two. At the end, the hostess/manager gave me a beautiful rose, and a little gift bag with Saratoga waters and a 15% off coupon for our next visit! This was our first, but certainly not our last, experience at the Scrimshaw Restaurant at the Desmond in Albany. Highly, highly recommended.
Dinner for 4 + a 5 yr old! From the host (Michele) to our server (Pat) and her assistant (Molly), everything was done to make us & particularly the Little Princess feel very, very comfortable. She had her own menu in a "grown-up" menu cover; Pat surprised her with applesauce (all eaten!) prior to her entree and she was asked to pick a rose for herself as we left. Was leery about bringing her, but she behaved well & I want to get her used to dining out in style...and that's the very definition of Scrimshaw! Grandma & I have dined there often before, and never had anything approaching a bad meal OR less- than- perfect service.
we loved the décor. the pianist was excellent and added to the ambiance. there isn't any place in Rochester that has the wonderful menue you have. the staff was very attentive and helpful. we have already sang your praise to our friends. I just wish you were closer to where we live.
We went to Scrimshaw for a special birthday dinner with a friend of ours. It's quiet ambience was welcomed over many louder plate clashing, utensil clanging, voice inhibiting venues. With plenty of space and beautiful colonial atmosphere, it was a setting perfect for an intimate gathering for 3 or 4.
With a varied menu that should please most anyone, it's broken into courses... this is not a place to go if you are looking for a quick cheap dinner, fair warning. We opted out of the courses and ordered dinner. Oddly enough the three of us decided on fish, unfortunately the "birthday boy" got the wrong 'sole' dish, but did not speak up until one of us noticed. Everything was wonderful, desserts, well we couldn't finish.
We'd go back!
As always, the food, service and atmosphere were second to none. I have never had a meal there that wasn't amazing. The wide array of appetizer, meal and wine choices provides options to please everyone. Not many restaurants offer the oysters and escargots. Scrimshaw is the gem of the capital district.
The experience for My granddaughter and I even exceeded our high expections. The Oysters Rockefeller set the high water mark in quality, better, I'm my estimation than Gallatoirs, in New Orleans, their reputed birthplace. Air travelers looking for just the right place for that evening before the trip, you will have found that spot
This was a 5 diamond restaurant according to Mobil and for one of the few times I agree. The food exceptional, the service flawless, the ambience wonderful. It is would be one I would go again a great place if you want to have a conversation that doesn't include a cell phone.
We ate here in August on our way home from vacation. We were so impressed with the food and ambiance, that we made reservations months in advance for our wedding anniversary celebration. We had to drive two and a half hours to get here, but we were certainly, not disappointed. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. I especially loved the chilled strawberry soup and my lobster tail was wonderful. Our server was very attentive and gave me a lovely long stem rose with a container of cookies when we finished our meal. We stayed the night in your beautiful hotel. We hope to make this a yearly event.
Six of us dined at Scrimshaw and had a very nice meal. We had not dined there in many years. The service was outstanding and the room is very nice. The food was quite good but I would hesitate to call it great.............nothing to complain about but it just did not meet our idea of a truly great dining experience.
