This restaurant is permanently closed. Permanently Closed - Scrimshaw is uniquely situated in historic wharf buildings right on the water in the Village of Greenport, New York. The restaurant setting reflects the history of the whaling ships that sailed from this port in the early years of the 20th century.
Scrimshaw's dining room offers water views on three sides and open-air dining on the dock. The quiet intimate bar overlooks historic Greenport boatyard and features a few tables for dining as well. Enjoy drinks in comfortable Adirondack chairs outdoors during the warmer months.
Although the cuisine is contemporary American, the chef's Asian and international background is reflected in many dishes.

I had a bad dining experience at Scrimshaw this past summer, but decided to give them a second try. My mistake. Never again. The only redeeming thing about this place is the gorgeous view of Greenport Harbor. That's it. The food was not good. The service was atrocious. Two strikes they are out.
Terrible uninformed untrained unprofessional inattentive inexcusably bad slow spaced out and just apathetic service.
Decent food, but served late. In shifts. Some meals arrived. Others didn't. It was a mess for the 4 of us.
No bread offered. No water offered. No salt n pepper offered. We had to ask...and it all took an unreasonably long time to appear...in a half empty restaurant.
The topper in this not inexpensive restaurant, as the used appetizer plates were finally being taken away the server/busser asked one of us to hand her a plate. I don't think I have ever heard a server ask that....not in a diner, a coffee shop, a cafe, nor a sandwhich place. "Can you hand me that plate?"
Great food, great atmosphere.
The oysters were fresh and the mignonette was down well. The cocktails were great as well.
Filet mignon was cooked to specification and the lobster tail over pasta was fabulous.
Would've liked to see more variety on the menu, but what was there was exceptional.
As we entered an empty restaurant on a busy Saturday night in town, a couple leaving said 'what a disappointment', and I must say I am in full agreement. We expected a wonderful evening with wonderful food and service and unfortunately ended up with a one star experience but with four star Manhattan prices. I'm hoping things improve.
It was an unfortunate dining experience because the our food was bland and extremely overpriced. The spicy Thai salad and a simple mixed salad and nothing more. Although the tuna was edible, it was also very tasteless.
I would also recommend that the staff consider vacuuming from the previous days' diners.
We were disappointed overall.
Scrimshaw remains far and away the best restaurant on the North Fork. Other Greenport restaurants have more hype around them, but Scrimshaw consistently delivers. The food and the location are just heavenly. I've eaten there numerous times and never had anything from the menu that was less than absolutely delicious. A magical place that exemplifies the best of North Fork living.
We at on the dock looking out at Greenport Harbor. There was a wonderful breeze and we were very comfortable even though it was in the 90's. Service was plentiful and amazing. Rose is a gem! The food was excellent. Recommend the grilled octopus and beet salad apps. All the main courses were delicious. Also try the drink of the day. A bit pricey but so worth it.
We had a mixed meal that was very overpriced. the service is still very uneven. There are a few young busboys wandering around with dust in their eyes. The restaurant has been in business too many years not to have gotten their service act together. Also everything on the menu is overpriced for the area.
Service was awful, waitstaff was inexperienced and unprofessional. It took 45 minutes to get appetizers. Main course came with a salad that featured home made croutons. There were no croutons. The waitress said she'd ask the chef about it. We had to flag her down 10 minutes later to be rudely told that they were being made. The croutons arrived after both my husband and myself had already finished our meals. The staff seemed to completely ignore us, instead of apologizing for the lousy service. The food was not up to par for an upscale restaurant. There are plenty of better choices to dine in Greenport. Skip this one!
We arrived for our 5:30 reservation and were seated by the owner, a very sweet and funny lady who was from Hong Kong. After describing the night's special, a heirloom tomato salad with watermelon, mint and goat cheese, she also convinced us on her secret recipe dumplings and a duck spring roll. Our waiter was also very helpful, she got us a nice bottle of white Burgundy and told us about the entrees, we ended up getting the rare tuna steak and the lamb chops. As we were enjoying our delicious appetizers the al fresco seating began to fill up, best to make a reservation on the weekends. Both our main dishes were cooked to perfection and the fish was practically sushi grade. We finished the night listening to a jazz soundtrack at their quiet bar with a lemon creme brulee and what may have been the best espresso martini EVER! This little gem of a restaurant is a must visit!
Once again - great location, terrible food and absolutely mediocre service.
I am still hoping that someone will invest in this great location and do the right thing. The Chef literally needs to walk out of this kitchen because not only she is not competent, even worse, she can take great ingredients and destroy them. And if the chef is the owner then she should truly be embarrassed for serving old tuna fish, stale bread and food that is so spicy that can make you sick - all in the name of making money. There is a reason why you can always make a reservation at Scrimshaw - even when Greenport is packed and Scrimshaw has the best location of all restaurants. Anyone who knows, really does not want to eat there. Go for the view, maybe for the drinks but that's about it.
Having eaten in some amazing restaurants in Greenport and vicinity, we were extremely disappointed in this restaurant. The service was extremely slow and inattentive (almost negligent). The menu for a seaport restaurant was a scant, odd assortment and blatantly absent of seafood options. The menu item of fried chicken, although the best tasting dish the four of us ate, was out of place in this type of venue. The only seafood dish that was appealing was a platter of four shrimp on a bed of rice for $35. The table next to us was seated for about 15 minutes and suddenly got up and left (we should have done the same). All in all, cuisine pricing and service were all out of sync and we will not be returning.
My husband, a friend and I had dinner at Scrimshaw on July 2. The setting is spectacular-right on the water, with a view of Greenport Harbor. Two apps were pretty good-the dumplings and the spring rolls. Now the bad news. The rest of our food was not good. The shrimp was so overspiced that I gagged (I like spicy food). The lamb was fatty. The bread was stale, white and tasteless. And the service was crazy bad. We waited an hour and a half for our main courses to arrive. The table next to us left in disgust after waiting even longer with no food in sight.
My major problem with this restaurant was that the food simply did not live up to the prices that are being charged for it. Also, the menu seems to be all over the map. Some stabs at Asian cooking, some at American classics (fried chicken) but it is hard to put together a meal that isn't oddly off balance. The service is lovely and the place has a lovely outdoor area that must be great when it's a little warmer than it was. But all in all, as Greenport's restaurants multiply, Scrimshaw needs a rework
Tuna for both woman was ordered rare but came well done.
Waiter returned with new plates within five minutes with rare tuna but
cold potatoes. Waiter didn't offer the ladies a drink or dessert for their mistake.
Wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Touch of Venice is much better and more attentive to the customers.
This was the 4th or 5th time we have eaten at Scrimshaw. Almost every time I have their Duck main course. They never let me down. Other menu items are also great. My wife loved the seafood stew as well as the Seps fresh asparagus appetizer. Our waiter was very attentive. We will certainly be back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Scrimshaw. We were fortunate to be there on a September evening when it was still mild enough (with a sweater!) to sit outside on the dock. The local wine was very nice and the food was delicious. When we are back in Greenport, we will definitely return to Scrimshaw.
Great place, food was excellent. Owner very friendly and went around to all tables to make sure everyone was satisfied . We were a group of 5 and everyone ordered something different and everyone was very happy with their meals. Beer battered avocado appetizer with the spicy sauce is a must try!!
