On Scratch’s menu, they have a soup specifically labeled as vegan and I specified when making the reservation that one of the members of the party is a vegan. However, when it came time to order, the server reported that the soup was the only vegan option and shrugged his shoulders when asked if they had any other options. It was an expensive meal that could not be fully enjoyed by all of the members of the party being left to eat soup and the burnt edge of an acorn squash (due to the dairy pre-mixed in the rice filling). If they are unwilling to cater to people with special diets, perhaps they should not have items labeled as such on the menu.
Yikes. Moved people already seated with drinks to make room for a larger group. Is this not what reservations are for ... to coordinate seating? Also, We were two people set at a four person table with several 2 people tables still open. Waitress asked for one of our chairs for incoming group then shortly after grabbed the other chair for another group. So 0 on the romantic factor with all the table movements and chair interruptions. Decent GF menu with exception of appetizers. The pork choice was very good but my chicken was dry. The Scratch salad was bland we both thought. They do not allow happy hour drinks at dinner table but said we could go sit in the bar. Nice wine list bottles starting at$28. The other plus was being right across the street from The Fox for the symphony. Overall it was just a 3 and pricey for a just okay experience and was very noisy. Not sure we will return. Still shocked that a restaurant of a supposedly higher quality moved people that had been seated for a bit to make room for another group. It seemed that was not well coordinated.
We dined at Scratch prior to an event at the Bing. The whole experience was great!. The waiter was very helpful with his inputs about what to order. We had the hanger steak, the steelhead and duck and all were excellent. The wine suggestion was also yummy and went well with my meal. They were accommodating of our time frame to get to our event and we will definitely go back. My only complaint is that the restaurant was pretty drafty and too cool for me, but that's my issue :-)
I won't judge Scratch, where we've often stopped in for dinner, on the basis of this unsatisfying experience. We made a reservation and came in to support the restaurant's anniversary. We were disappointed in the ho-hum food preparation. I asked for my entree medium-well, which it was not, but some of the vegetables were way overcooked. My husband also was underwhelmed by the dish he ordered.
We'll probably come back again, but it won't be for a while. I don't mind paying a pretty hefty price for a memorable meal, but I don't want to for food I could have prepared better at home.
The food at Scratch is excellent, and the location is perfect, especially if you're going to a downtown event before or after. The wait staff is pretty great, but sometimes sketchy depending on who you get. Two of the gals that helped us were great, and one . . . yep, other things on her mind apparently. All in all a great experience when creating a special birthday surprise.
We were seated on the Rain side of the establishment, which isn't a big deal aside from it being so dark that we needed to use the candles on the table to read the menus. The pork loin was alright, but with the mashed potatoes being as bland as they were for being "blue cheese", they weren't worth the price tag. Similar reviews were given for the ribeye and flat iron steaks. My girlfriend spoke highly of her halibut and rice, though. I think we'll only come back for drinks and find food elsewhere.
Menu is great, but for some reason the individual dishes did not come together well. Best item on the table was the salmon, it was cooked perfectly. We had been out all day and we were in street clothes when we arrived, we felt under-dressed and a little uncomfortable. The waiter was too casual, not really friendly; felt like he drew a short straw to serve that night. Probably would not go back.
Do not order the seafood dishes. The clam appetizer and Seafood Hot Pot were overcooked and rubbery. The lamb and duck were decent as well as the bread sticks. The server was barely visible and luckily we did not bring a guest with us. Definitely will not return to this restaurant.
Overall it was a good experience, there were 6 of us with 3 giving a thumbs up an the other three a thumbs down. The thumbs up was for the duck, rib eye and seafood trio (scallop, shrimp & lobster). The thumbs down was the 3 seafood hot pots. The sauce had the taste and consistancy of Campbels canned tomatoe soup which detracted from the seafood.
Scratch is our go-to place when we stop over in Spokane. Great room, fantastic menu, and wonderful service. And a great wine list. All of our meals here have been special. the seafood dishes are exceptionally well prepared. We're from Vancouver BC and eat a lot of seafood and the plates here are top notch. A great place for a special meal!
Appetizers were awesome, we had the baked Brie and Crab Chowder. The main course was just ordinary and the halibut my wife ordered was over cooked and dried out. Would expect better for the prices. I would recommend going their for happy hour and enjoying drinks with appetizers, but I don't know if I would return to eat a meal.
Had anxiously awaited the Spokane Scratch experience. It's very popular and we'd been turned away many times sans reservations. Finally planned ahead- dinner for 4 and a show at the Fox. It's very convenient to meet at Rain for those who appreciate the pre-event cocktail. (Can't conscientiously call it a 'Happy Hour', because Spokane has yet to figure that out-but that's another story) So yes, Rain has great hand-crafted cocktails, the group can gather, and then step to your awaiting table. Friendly staff makes it all happen. So far so good. The sad review is entirely based on kitchen performance, overcooked seafood and incomplete plating. The Hot Pot, a fantastically flavorful bowl of goodness included scallops and prawns that appeared to have been simmering since lunch. Instead of freshly prepared seafood, it was served similarly to a bowl of cioppino one may pay 8 bucks for at the boardwalk or food truck. The Hot Pot is an excellent $10 quick lunch item, not a $31 dollar sit-down dinner entree. Likewise, the $30 halibut is billed with a berry salsa, Japanese melon syrup... it arrived (fully cooked, not seared), without seasoning or sauce of any type. The meal was half completed before a side dish of the salsa arrived with a - 'Sorry 'bout that', as if the slight had been minor. Imagine paying top dollar for 1st and 2nd course, to include select wines, and exuberant cross-table companionship, to be served lack-luster main courses. Just not what you'd expect from a finer kitchen. In the festivities of the evening, no complaints were lodged, but then we really wondered- should you have to, or should a plain piece of halibut gotten someone's attention? Had the establishment even compted a side order of bread- which is excellent by the way, in acknowledgement of the oversight, we'd be happy to try again. Perhaps was a fluke, but as is, we have other venues to discover- still in search of a true, not-limited-to-what-we-choose-for-you-that-day, kinda Happy Hour.
