Scratch (Mtn View) Ratings and Reviews
We come here regularly, and the food and service are normally very good. This time was different.
The food was good, but the service was terrible. Long (>15 minute) wait for our appetizer. Long (>15 minute) wait for our salads. Long (>15 minute) wait for our entrees. And we ordered a second round of drinks that we never received! Worst service we have had in a Mountain View restaurant in >5 years. No excuse since they were not very busy and it was not a young, inexperienced waiter.
Nice interior, holiday wreaths were still up, but festive on a chilly January night. They also have outdoor dining in adjacent patio which would be nice for brunch. I love seafood and was very happy with the lobster bisque soup and the wonderful bowl of mussels and Kennebec french fries with a delicious sauce and a hint of bacon..yummy! My friends tried the the fish special, the roast chicken and the short ribs. All loved their main course including the green salads with pomegranate. However, one friend did not notice the short ribs came with hominy/grits and horseradish. My guess is the waiter would have substituted another side dish, if requested.
Service was very good and prompt.
Overall: delicious food!
Also great location--very close to Mountain View Performing Arts Center.
The food is good here and they have a menu with something for most people. The bill does add up though so I don't rate it great for value for money. Service is normally good and it is normally not too hard to find a park. Noise-wise, it was not quiet last time I went, but acceptable.
We really wanted to try this restaurants since we really like the other restaurants owned by the same person.
We found it to be really expensive but not worth the price. We came mainly for the drinks.
I ordered a French 75 and half the glass was filled with ice. My husband ordered an old fashioned and it was good.
We ordered the mushroom flatbread and it was good too.
But we expected more from this place.
It was great to celebrate my husband's birthday there, only he and I without kids. Food is really good, we ordered the lobster and pork ribs, both delicious. We were not so thrilled about the calamari appetizer as it had other items (which were not as good as the calamari), but wine selection was great and our creme brulee for dessert was perfect. Recommended.
Scratch has a lovely dining room in the heart of Castro street. Service was good. But food was just ok (we had the short ribs and pork chop). And it was over $35 per entree. For that price, the meat should be exceptional and the sauce/accompaniments as well. I think this might be a place for business meetings where someone else is paying and you are less focused on the food.
I have eaten here many times before and always had a better experience. This time the order was submitted wrong, the correct item was a risotto. It came hot but under cooked. The butternut squash wasn't blended into the sauce, it was tiny chunks that were very bland. The heaviest flavor was onion. I would go back, this must have just been an off day.
We enjoyed our New Year's Eve dinner at Scratch. The prime rib and ahi tuna dishes were pretty good. As regulars, we'd love to see the menu vary somewhat, perhaps seasonally. There are vegan options on the vegetarian menu, but never anything for vegans on the dessert menu.
I'm a bit disappointed with our recent experience at Scratch. The first time we dined here in 2017 it was amazing. I ordered the lamb chops and they were delicious. The second time we dined here, for New Years Eve with some friends, the meals were bland and overpriced. I ordered the special (Rib Eye) and my boyfriend ordered the Lamb Shank. The Rib Eye, requested medium rare, came out completely red with no seasoning or flavor on it at all. The Lamb Shank tasted like a Pork Chops so much so that our entire table tasted it and asked our server if we had received the wrong order. Our counterparts ordered fish of the day and scallops and they were nothing to rave about either. They forgot one of our sides and our server didn't come back during our entrees to ask if everything was fine and the drinks were just okay for their $15 price point. It wasn't even busy when we were dining, so not really sure what happened. I will say that the appetizers (lamb meatballs and ceviche) were good. It seems like a hit or miss dining experience.
They served burnt burger , dry overcooked fish and looked like left - over ham and bacon with very little spinach and mushrooms requested to be added to the omelet. Kid did not eat the burger. Did not include the condiments asked for and have to be asked several times.
Things started out Ok with ordering beverages and appetizer and than kind of went down hill from there. One waiter Alberto seemed very disinterested with us and his job in general. In fact he just disappeared. A very nice man who wasn’t our waiter brought our appetizers and finally more bread that I had previously asked our waiter for. After a overpriced meal and don’t get me wrong we are from Sonoma County and used to high prices we left sitting without the offer of coffee or dessert. I finally asked another waitstaff woman to get our waiter who finally showed up with a attitude and we had to request dessert menu. Than again after 15 minutes he came back and we so fed up asked for the check which again with more attitude brought and slapped on the table. Today he is probably still miffed on the small tip he received. Hopefully he may learn to actually do his job and most important be kind to others. The restaurant is very nice and the food was served with good eye appeal but rudeness just wrecks the whole thing
Although both service and food have been very uneven on previous visits, we enjoyed very good dinners and attentive service from our server, Juan. The braised short rib was excellent--succulent, tender and tasty, and our guest enjoyed the meatloaf entree. We keep our fingers crossed on future visits.
Following previous good experience at the restaurant, brunch was a total disappointment. It took over an hour to be served, and when our food appeared one order was incorrect and all were ice cold. Three attempts to get hot water for tea resulted in lukewarm water. The server explained that they were handling a large group party -- if the restaurant is not prepared to handle a party and typical Sunday brunch guests they should limit the reservations and close for private parties. We were celebrating birthdays with out of town visitors and were embarrassed by the experience.
In general, everything was really good, but we were charged an automatic 20% gratuity because we were a party of six. There was a very small, illegible footnote in the menu about this that was impossible to see. It's not the end of the world, but the restaurant should do a better job of notifying customers about the automatic 20% gratuity for groups of six or more.
We came for Thanksgiving meal but the meal was not available. Its website posted the Thanksgiving menu but was not specified that it was only available on Thanksgiving day. A big disappointment. We had to order something else. Food and service were OK. But there were parties around so it was very noisy.
Very disappointing though wait for seating was too long it seems that the process was convoluted. For the waiter to arrive with water was unacceptable long. The order process was awkward with the electronic ordering system and then food took to long to arrive basics like ketchup And water had to be requested multiple times. The prices were higher than expected given the level of service.
Great location, nice looking space. And then the service and food started. This place is completely overpriced - dinner for 2, which included 2 glasses of wine and no dessert, totaled $180. The prices would lead you to believe that the service / ambiance would be great - however this place is more suited to families. There were a lot of children running around unsupervised (and I had a child with me - I get it. But wow!). Will not be back and will actively recommend against.
The spicy margarita was fabulous!!!! The food was delicious and the service was great! We had the lobster and the scallops. Both were very fresh, cooked to perfection, and delicious. The bacon wrapped dates were also a delicious treat! I will return to scratch again in the future.
Wish the service matched the food. Good looking spot, we’ve been there multiple times, knowing up front we will be sacrificing good service in the name of having a good meal. This visit was no exception. Barely greeted, no acknowledgement from the on duty host or manager when we left, service was the usual - poor. Who delivers a cheese plate and doesn’t bother to tell you what is on it? Who doesn’t preset for the next course? Whochecks back when you are halfway through the entree? Who literally drops a dessert menu on the table without a word and doesn’t even offer coffee? We skipped dessert because we just couldn’t bear to spend any more hard earned money on a server that either didn’t care or was poorly trained.
The only food item I wish they’d lose is the dark bread served because it’s terribly dry. But otherwise the food was terrific, as usual.
