Scion Restaurant Silver Spring Ratings and Reviews
Nice looking restaurant with a busy bar scene. The service was okay, although i think every restaurant should train its wait staff to NOT clear plates until all guests have finished the course.
Unfortunately, many of the dishes we ordered were disappointing: avocado pesto with shrimp and crab was mushy with scant seafood. Duck ravioli seemed to lack duck. Wasabi salad was nothing more than a little bit of lettuce, some crispy Asian noodles and bottled dressing. On the plus side, turkey meat loaf entree was good, as was the scallop and white bean appetizer.
We were a party of six. The first of us were seated promptly even though the entire party had not yet arrived. We were immediately given menus and asked about drink selections. The beer selection is impressive, especially the diversity of canned and bottled brews.
There were enough main dish selections so that nobody had trouble finding a dish, but there were no so many that deciding was complicated.
The dishes came properly spaced, so that we did not feel rushed. The quality was good and the sides were obviously freshly made.
The only down side is the parking. On a Friday night, it took quite a while to find spaces, and even the suggested garage was full. The closest available street parking was blocks away.
Overall, Scion made a favorable impressions.
There was barely anyone there when we arrived but the staff wouldn't seat us without a full party. We finally were allowed to sit down after about 25 min. Servers were inattentive and slow. Food was good but nothing special. Except the potatoes that came with breakfast entrees - delicious! But, I would still rather go somewhere else next time.
Made reservations online... couldn't find parking so I called to let staff know I was on the way. Staff kindly directed me via phone to great FREE parking!!!
My guest arrived before me and the server "snootily" asked her if she had a reservation. There was one other couple in the entire restaurant at this time. Other staff quickly diffused the semi insulting situation by informing him that I had called and indeed had reservations.
After that confrontation, I noted that we had to ask him for everything-- cocktail napkins, coffee refills, bag for carry out, etc.
The food was creative and very tasty. Service and attitude by this one server was less than acceptable. Every other staff person encountered was personable, friendly and helpful.
This was my first time at Scion. We went there for Sunday Brunch. I wish it had opened a little earlier than 11:30 but the service and menu were pleasing. Their "potatoes" are delicious spicy potato chips. They were amenable to specific requests. I will go back.
The restaurant had some menu flubs (descriptions didn't match the plate as served), and the staff was happy to correct them and comp the mistakes. Our main issue was that the staff, while very nice, didn't manage the simple things like what beers were ordered, bringing a glass along with a canned beer, remembering the beer ordered the second time around and such. It was mostly a polish thing, maybe it was an off night, and maybe it wasn't, but there are too many good restaurants in the area to allow for flubs AND lackadaisical table waiting.
Family of four stopped for late lunch. Quiet table. Burgers were cooked perfectly. Mediterranean salad with chicken was light option that was packed with flavor. Hostess was helpful in directing us to close free parking garage. Waitress was attentive but not hovering.
I've been here for lunch with work friends and always enjoyed it. The crab reuben is great and don't miss the fried pickles!
Recently went for my anniversary. The food was great and service was fantastic. They have at least a dozen high quality beers on tap too.
Service was not good. There was one server who was the same person greeting at the door. It was very difficult to get anyone's attention. The overall meal took way longer than it should have. We would order things and they wouldn't come out till 30 min later. Ordered a mimosa and glass of wine and it didn't come out till after we had already finished our meal. Granted they did comp a few things but still. Not pleasant experience.
Went with 2 others. Friendly staff. Two of us ordered a burger and fries. The burger was very average, but the fries were coated in a very spicy dressing ? Cayenne. All three of us tried it and couldn't eat it. Told the waiter who said was garlic-obviously wasn't. He did take the plates away and get us new fries, with one of the managers apologising and telling us how long we would have to wait.
They dealt with it well, but if serving inedibly spicy fries, should be advertised as such on the menu.
We were a group of eight. The restaurant called the day before to see if there were a special occasion (not us, but the other table had a birthday). Our gluten free person really liked their food -- and they have a separate fryer for GF. Vegetarian options were good. Really good crab cakes with the Eggs benedict and Old Bay hollandaise.
It was a bit loud as the other table was having a party, still we could hear each other. We had to wait to order a bit, but the food came reasonably quickly for a party of eight. Everyone was pleased with the meal.
We made reservations only to come to an empty restaurant that was brightly lit. Though there were many open tables, the service was slow. We noticed that the menu was all about autumn flavors, chicken pot pies, etc. We were there in April. When the waiter came to take our orders he told us that the menu was completely outdated and explained the new items. Print new menus! Kinkos is across the road. So, we all quickly changed what we'd chosen for dinner and waited patiently for drinks and meals that took too long. I will not be going back.
Scion is definitely a hip bar and restaurant that is much needed in Silver Spring as it becomes a trendy place for folks to live just outside of DC. The brunch was well-cooked and tasty. The server was appropriately attentive and the noise level was lively and bearable but not deafening.
Now for the constructive suggestions: 1.) Please offer decaf. coffee! I love coffee with a meal but as I head into the afternoon, another cup of joe is one too much; 2) Please consider a non-dairy creamer for the coffee (maybe almond milk or soy milk). The restaurant had neither and I am dairy sensitive.
The bottom line is....ta da! I will return again to try some of the entrees and desserts. Scion gets a 7.5-8 which is pretty darn good compared to most. Looking forward to my next meal there!
This was our first time at Scion. But it will not be our last. We had the Monte Cristo sandwich and the Jumbo Lump Crab Reuben. Both were so wonderful that we look forward to going back and ordering the same sandwiches. The seasoned potatoes were good too. This place has a creative menu, which we really appreciate.
Great food and service. I appreciate the gluten free options...wish there were something gf for dessert. We were surprised that the kitchen was taking last calls around 9pm on a Saturday night and that by that time here was no coffee or hot tea, but still, overall, we had a good meal.
I had previously been to Scion for happy hour, and it seemed to be a very "happening" spot. I visited this past Saturday for brunch with a friend of mine. At noon, it was almost empty, which was surprising. My friend and I were there catching up for several hours. The crowd did fill in a little bit, but not much. The service was good. The food was good, although I've had better huevos rancheros. The apple crumble dessert was delicious.
The food here is consistently fine. There are a lot of choices on the menu which is always great for a diverse group of friends who have very different preferences and eating requirements. However the hostess was one of the rudest people I have ever met. It's amazing how one incredibly nasty person can ruin the entire experience.
Had the pork chop and it was prepared with herbs on a bed of apple sauce and was outstanding! My daughter had the spice chicken and ate the entire meal - something she rarely does. Their starters are really good - with our favorite being the sweet potato nachos. Good wine and beer list with lots of craft choices.
My wife and I came here for burgers (Tuesday burger night) and it was delicious. As a red-blooded Italian man, I take my burgers VERY seriously - and this did not disappoint. The burger was cooked exactly how we like it (medium rare) and the quality of beef was great. The sides were delicious too! I had the regular fries, and my wife had the sweet potato fries. Both were great. I was concerned my caveman tendencies would take over and I would eat both of our dishes, but I showed some restraint - and actually was pleasantly full after the meal.
I earned major points with my wife too. She was thrilled.
My dark beer - the great divide - was outstanding too.
