About Scarlet Oak Tavern
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine, led by Executive Chef Stephen Sherman, centers around great steaks and the freshest seafood, although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.

Scarlet Oak Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Seated immediately per our reservation and greeted by our server shortly thereafter. After drinks we order dinner which took a bit long to arrive and disappointed because rare steaks were clearly medium. Our previous experience here is that the kitchen has a problem with cooking rare, be it a hamburger or a steak, so while disappointed, we were not surprised.
We were rewarded with desert on the house for the steaks. Sides were good as was the Caesar salad. We had a pleasant dinner with good friends on a very busy Saturday night. Service was slow but adequate.
My girlfriend and I went for lunch. We started with the garlicky shrimp & Caesar salad, then had the butternut squash, sausage and carmalized onion flatbread. We finished with the chocolate cherry brûlée and cappuccino. Each had a different wine wine. It was a lovely lunch. I grew up in Hingham and have been there many times, it was my friend’s first, she liked it very much and said she wants to come back on a snowy night and have a romantic dinner with her husband!
We enjoyed our evening at Scarlett Oak; the only issue was the additional 30 minute wait beyond our reservation time.
Our waitress Cathy was very good attending to all our needs during the evening.
I started with the creamy sausage soup which was great and then had the Filet Mignon which was excellent. My wife had the Filet of sole and my sister in-law had a Caesar Salad topped with Steak Tips; both meals were very good. We enjoyed our meals, service and the atmosphere. The restaurant has an extensive wine list but a very limited wine by the glass menu; expansion of the red & white wine by the glass options would be an improvement.
My boyfriend and I went to scarlet oak per a referral from my cousin who lives in the are and frequents it often. We made a table reservation however, when we arrived and saw how lively and cozy the bar area was we asked the hostesses if we could switch. She was so accommodating and walked us to the bar area and pointed out an available high top table. Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Our food was delicious, great presentation and overall just what we were looking for! I would definitely recommend scarlet oak for the overall dining experience, date or good place to socialize.
We went here for my wife's birthday. We had lunch. I think we had a mixed experience here. They were out of one of the four entrees that was listed for lunch. I had the salmon. It was done nicely but the serving seemed a bit scant. My wife had the steak tips which she said were good. The restaurant was nice and quiet when we first sat down but music came on which was kind of on the rock side. Not my choice for a restaurant like this. The music kept coming on and going off. It was like there was a reception problem or something. It was quite annoying actually. This place has a lot of potential. The atmosphere is rustic but contemporary. A good place for a romantic meal. But I afraid it was not quite hitting the mark when we were there.
I am so upset and disappointing by the service I received at Scarlet Oak. I made a reservation for brunch since it had rave reviews online and when we arrived it really wasn't very busy. We were walked over to a table at 11:22 (Reservation for 11:30).
Now, in the time it took to get from 11:22am to 12:06 PM, we were ignored by 2 managers who were going around doing seating arrangements, 5 waitresses who walked by us over and over again without greeting, a host twice and I even made direct eye contact with the managers! We put our ID's on the table, still ignored, I waved a couple times to be ignored, and I even was ignored when we got up to leave! I was only greeted by the young girl up front, nobody else. I would never come back.
It really sucks to leave a restaurant thirsty, starving, and angry. It really ruined my Sunday, and made me feel like absolute crap about myself. I have been wondering in my head if maybe it was me. Was I underdressed? Nope. Am I not "Hinghamy" enough? Probably...
Go here to feel like an uninvited outsider & leave in tears because the brunch special DATE you planned a week ago is RUINED and now you're embarrassed because people witnessed it that were eating their breakfast. I really wish I spoke to the manager, she did look right at me though and nothing. For a HALF HOUR.
Please note my ratings for Food and value are a 3 because I am sure the food is delicious and the place really is lovely, apparently I am not good enough to enjoy it though.
Beautiful restaurant in an older historic setting. Menu is rather traditional with good steak and seafood options. Good wine selections as well. Service was excellent from hostess to wait staff.
Can be a bit louder near the bar area but thats to be expected.
We’ve been to The Scarlet Oak restaurant numerous times, always an enjoyable evening. The steaks are cooked to perfection and I suggest the garlic shrimp appetizer, so delicious. You should make a reservation it’s a very busy place weekend nights. Another nice part is free valet parking.
The food was great but the staff was obviously trying to rush us out and turn the table. We had a reservation at 6:30 and they were pushing us to order right away - no time to enjoy a drink and conversation before dinner. Our waitress was rude and made us feel like we were annoying her - very disappointing night overall.
While reservations were at 7, we did not get seated until 8:00 PM, and this was for a birthday. However once seated, food, as usual, was fantastic and our host and hostess (She was training) were great. The shift manager said out drinks would be comp'ed they were not. But overall Scarlet Oak was great.
My husband and I went to Scarlet Oak for our anniversary dinner tonight. Ashley was our server and could not have been more attentive. She was prompt, efficient, and friendly. She went above and beyond to make sure we had a wonderful experience, even having our dessert be complimentary for our anniversary. The food was outstanding, cooked exactly the way we requested. I can’t say enough about this experience, it was great.
