About Scarlet Oak Tavern
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine, led by Executive Chef Stephen Sherman, centers around great steaks and the freshest seafood, although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.

Scarlet Oak Tavern Ratings and Reviews
The food was spectacular service was impeccable the ambience very nice. The only complaint I have is that I made an 830 reservation and was not seated until 9 o’clock this seems to be the norm whenever I go to this restaurant. I know some people never want to leave the table and that is the reason why .
We hit scarlet oak tavern tonight based on recommendations from this page for an anniversary dinner. Our reservation was 830 and we’re about 15 minutes early so grabbed a drink at the bar. Bartender a bit annoyed as we weren’t seated at the bar and made it known she was unhappy she had to service those of us around the perimeter, but whatever. We were seated a few minutes later and our waiter was wonderful, knowledgeable and his recommendations of specials were on point. Started with the seafood plate which was an assortment of oysters, shrimp, lobster tail and crabmeat on ice. Entrees: I had the cod on a bed of fennel purée, squash and what I believe were fried chick peas and bacon bits. He had the steak, butternut squash flan and baked potatoes. Basically we ate my meal and his will be steak and eggs for breakfast, very generous portions. Dessert: he had chocolate creme brûlée which was good but I prefer it warm, this was cool. I had apple cobbler and cinnamon ice cream, again I prefer warmed, this was not but the flavor was good on both and can’t go wrong with a cup of cappuccino. Perfect for the kind of night I wanted us to have and the bill was more than reasonable for everything we had, actually much less than I anticipated. Overall a great experience.
I went to Scarlet Oak Tavern with a friend to celebrate a birthday, on the recommendation of my husband's Doctors' group who recently had a luncheon meeting there which they enjoyed very much. The attractive old tavern, tastefully decorated for the holidays, was a very pleasant and comfortable setting. The friendly service, creative menu, and delicious food all added up to a very enjoyable birthday lunch. I would definitely recommend the Scarlet Oak Tavern to family and friends.
We made reservations for dinner on New Years Eve. When we did so, we made sure to include the fact that we would be having a person in a wheelchair in our party. When we arrived the hostess decided to sit us all the way back in the dining area. In order to get to the table we had to navigate the entire dining area and even then it required that at least three other parties had to get up in he middle of their meals and move their chairs so we could pass. Our server was fine the rest of the staff not so much.
I have frequented this place many times, maybe due to a busy Sat night but....just less than optimal.
We requested to be seated not at back of restaurant as there are "cold spots" however exactly where we were seated.
Meal: swordfish special, was very thin (almost like they filleted it), never seen anything like it and i have it all the time. Tasted very good but presentation not so good. My friend's bearnaise sauce came cold for her steak.
Restaurant was quite noisy and servers kept dropping things right near us (trays, utensils, etc) was just very noticeable.
They did call me to confirm reservation and to say they could accommodate a later time requested but we decided to keep current one.
Food was good. Service was fine. My daughter and I were asked to move our seats half way through our meal, though. Literally, as our main dish was coming out, we were asked to switch tables. No compensation was offered...also weird. I did tell the manager when we were leaving and he had no idea and offered us a gift certificate (which we didn’t take) but it was still weird. We would go back though; give it another chance.
Unfortunately 2 out of 4 meals were not good. My friend ordered the Mac and cheese which was not served hot. My meal, haddock in corn & bacon chowder, was missing a main ingredient....the bacon, not so flavorful without it. The server did reheat the Mac & Cheese and brought over some bacon but a bit late into the meal. Cocktails were delicious. Will go back again but very disappointing.
I love the food here, and our server was great once we sat down. However, having to wait 45min past my dinner reservation time, and in the meantime having to overhear the snarky host & hostess comments about guests frustrated by these delays was a terrible experience, particularly as our party included a young child. And by the way, the excuse that diners are taking longer than expected to wrap up their meals doesn’t fly. It was he holiday season - of course you should assume longer guest meal times. That’s not “not your fault” - that’s either deliberate over-booking or poor/inexperienced management. Thanks to SO’s poor planning we had to cut our birthday celebration short, basically getting a few bites of our dinner in, and then wrapping up to get our child to bed. Thanks for an awful birthday experience.
The food is great, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, the service is just right, there's a nice wine selection at fair prices... you can't go wrong. Except, the parking situation is awful. At busy times, the valet gets busy and there's a line of cars extending out to the busy street. I wish they would just make the general parking lot bigger! The valet mess seems to cause more trouble than it's worth.
Went for lunch on a Saturday and the place was packed. There were several holiday parties taking place. As a result, our meal took about 45 minutes to arrive. We had a show to get to so we were rushed to eat and had to skip dessert. Our food was very good and the service was friendly. It was just a busy day to try this place. We would go back to try it again.
Seated immediately per our reservation and greeted by our server shortly thereafter. After drinks we order dinner which took a bit long to arrive and disappointed because rare steaks were clearly medium. Our previous experience here is that the kitchen has a problem with cooking rare, be it a hamburger or a steak, so while disappointed, we were not surprised.
We were rewarded with desert on the house for the steaks. Sides were good as was the Caesar salad. We had a pleasant dinner with good friends on a very busy Saturday night. Service was slow but adequate.
