About Scalini Fedeli - Chatham

Scalini Fedeli was opened by chef-owner Michael Cetrulo in 1995 and very quickly became New Jersey's highest rated Italian restaurant. Rated excellent by the New York Times in 1996 and New Jersey's favorite restaurant in Zagat's Survey in 2001 and New Jersey Monthly's best Italian and top 25 overall in 2007. Highlights from the menu include soft egg yolk raviolo with black truffle butter, pignoli crusted salmon with artichoke and mint agnolotti in a light tomato and basil broth and braised short ribs of beef with a cherry pepper and port glaze. Set in an historic building built in 1740, the atmosphere is slightly formal with Tuscan style vaulted ceilings finished with Venetian plaster. Tapestry and antique mirrors adorn the walls.

The food is excellent. The portions are large, so go hungry! I had the fish special and it was excellent. Light and flavorful. The atmosphere is lovely, but a little dated...the tapestry fabric on chairs is old and the window treatments are very dated, circa 1987. My husband and I went for our anniversary because we love the restaurant. It is one of the best restaurants outside of the city. We live about 30 minutes away, but it is worth the trip anytime. We will go back! We highly recommend the restaurant as you will never have a bad meal.

Excellent waiter service and great tasting and well plated desserts. However, the rest of the food was far below what I expected for the price in terms of taste and plating. The ambiance was very strange. The restaurant is painted to look modern and could work, but the upholstery is very old and doesn’t fit the motiff. Additionally, the music oddly fluctuated between the music you’d expect (Sinatra etc.) to things that didn’t fit what they are going for (Bob Marley etc. ).

Hadn't been to this restaurant in many years and despite the same décor the food was terrific. Don't go there on a diet as they start you out with 3 rolls each. Despite the three course meal, the restaurant supplies additional treats along the way, from a special appetizer to a pre-dessert dessert. I was pleasantly surprised and will be back!

Our appetizers (gnocchi, ravioli) and dinners (veal, duck) were outstanding. The combination of ingredients made each dish unique and tasty. We had great service. We mentioned in our Open Table reservations that we were celebrating an anniversary and, without any prompting, placed us in a corner table and had a candle on each of our desserts. If there is anything that caused me to pause was a glass of wine (Chardonnay) for $19. It was suggested, without reference to cost, as far superior to the Chardonnay on the menu (it was good). Otherwise, the we were pleased with the value.

Very good food, although the menu rarely changes. Table of 12 was extremely loud. Several tables, including us, complained. Food is traditional Italian. Veal is very good. Servers have been pretentious in the past. This time, our server was reasonably friendly. I hope the manager has been working on this.

We had heard so much about Scalini Fedeli and how great it was supposed to be. It didn't come close to expectations. Nothing about it was remarkable; average at best. The dishes were mixtures of the ingredients list on the menu as if there are pots of each dish waiting in the kitchen and the orders are just scooped out. My first concern was the size of the menu. No good restaurant can have that many dishes (~15 appetizers and ~15 main courses plus daily specials) prepared freshly everyday. Nothing seemed homemade either. Pasta was out of a box and mushrooms seemed out of a can. There are hundreds of better Italian restaurants in NJ/NY and many within 10 miles of Scalini Fedeli.

We have been there a few times trying to have a nice dinner and it never happens. The waiters are so overly impressed with themselves and their restaurant it turns us off. They never engage us during the course of the meal and upon our departure we do not feel like we can't wait to return, in fact we will not be back. The food is excellent.

I have been many times (often with family), yet often ask myself why we keep coming here. The food is nothing special, being on par or a step above your local Italian restaurant. The true value of the restaurant lies in its price. You get 3 courses for $59, plus the accompanying amuse bouche and dessert cookies. By presenting three courses and complimentary additions for a reasonably low price, it seems like a good value for "fine dining." The restaurant's decor, much like the expansive traditional menu, is dated. Appears to be very popular among older demographics. Overall inexpensive wine menu.

Scalini Fedeli never disappoints. I have been there many times in the past several years and it is always outstanding. The food is excellent, no matter what you eat. The service is good and everyone is friendly and aiming to please. I have no problem coming from Staten Island to this highly recommended restaurant.

As always, perfect, perfect, perfect! The food and service are always top notch. Considering the price vs. the service and quality of the food, you can't get anywhere near this without going into the city and spending nearly double.

This review may seem severe, but when one drops hundreds of dollars on a meal, the bar of expectations is high. The Maitre, the training of the head waiters and the secondary staff was abhorrent for a restaurant of this caliber. The first thing our waiter asked us was if we would be interested in a something from the wine list. A trained individual knows that one orders a bottle of wine after deciding what to eat . I requested a Ferrari Brut to start with and clean the palate. The head waiter placed the glasses on the table commenting "here is your Champagne". After informing him that I ordered the California Sparkling Wine and not the French Champagne that was on the menu, he corrected himself, embarrassed that I would know the difference. I asked which of the Italian white wines would he recommend with a low acidity as that would go best with the different items my wife and I ordered. He commented none of the wines their restaurant carried were high in acidity. His comment was more a defense of the establishment's wine list rather than understanding there are times when wines of high acidity are indicated. Realizing this individual had no idea, I chose the Grechetto, a wine of moderate acidity and a good choice for what we ordered. My wife's second course was good but mine was terrible. There may have been a bad shrimp or possibly a poorly prepared dish. After one bite, I left the entire plate sitting. I declined taking it home to the secondary server, who did not bring this to the attention of our head waiter. The head waiter asked if we enjoyed our meal. I was smiling at him and I was about to say how disappointed I wasvwhen he walked away. I refused the dessert as I was feeling a bit queasy. When presented with the bill, I said I was displeased. The Maitre came over and asked if I wanted the plate taken off the bill. Are you kidding? A maitre never asks, he just does it. My experience is a blemish on their reputation. Poor service, disappointing dishes.

Very Good Place. Food was very good. Wine List was good. Service was prompt. Everything is price fixed which I am not wild about, but overall the value was right. A little to dark for my tastes though. I really like to see what I am eating. Definitely a keeper.

Outstanding prix fixe cuisine with attentive service. This restaurant exceeded our expectations and provided multiple opportunities for all the flavors to burst in our happy mouths! I've dined in the Manhattan location and this is parallel if not better. There was an abundance of food plus the extra touches of focaccia, amuse bouche, intermezzo and assortment of petits fours. The desserts we ordered were also exceptional.

My wife's favorite restaurant. Food is extraordinary in every way. Presentation and decor very elegant. Everyone at the table loved their meals. The reason for 4 stars this time was service seemed a tad off this time. Initially quite slow - took an unusual amount of time to order initial drinks and then felt rushed later.
We will certainly return. And would expect the usual high end service
