About Scala's Bistro

Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.

Reservation recommended. Starving after driving in that afternoon, Service was slow, eggs beni were served super raw, not safe to eat and sent back. My veggie burger was good. Server was kind and fun just didn't check on us that often. I had to wait until I was almost done eating to get ketchup. FYI - this is a pet friendly restaurant & hotel(indoors) not good if you're allergic which we didn't know when I made reservations on open table. Luckily we got a table near the bar where there were no dogs. Weekend of Nov 18th is a huge convention here for service animals, avoid this place if you are allergic or worried about pet dander on you or your food. They were all good pups, just not used to them being inside of restaurants where we live.

Scala's was conveniently located as part of the Sir Francis Drake hotel where I was staying. The food was very good. Ironically we had a charming older gentleman as a waiter who was very knowledgeable in describing the ingredients of the menu items, but the delay between ordering and receiving food negatively impacted the meal. People who arrived after us were served and eating long before our food was served. Even an 8 PM reservation found Scala's very busy.

Good food but ambiance was better before the new bright lightening. Miss the old romantic feel.

Fried dough, with veggies, shrimp, calamari buried. Server, who was overwhelmed. Oh there’s the squash blossom, buried in oily old deep fried, overused fryer oil. All a mess. Will never....yep never...recommend on my tours.

Pleasant small restaurant attached to Drake Hotel. Attentive staff. Quality ingredients with fresh preparation. Parmesan boudini light and unusual. Veal Milanese, overdone and tough, bland. Frisée salad undressed and tasteless. Espresso watery. With 1 glass of wine, $94. Disappointing and would not recommend.

We had a great experience here, even though we were sat 20 minutes after our reservation time. The hostesses were very attentive and apologetic, as the restaurant was very busy (Saturday night at 8:00), and even sent us a free desert. I will definitely be coming back!

Scalas never disappoints, we’ve been there several times now and have loved it every time! Our waiter, who looks like Ben kingsley, was fantastic! We had a fabulous meal, too many drinks, and a great time!

I enjoyed lunch before the theater. It was the brunch menu and the Frito Misto and Bloody Mary were superb The service was excellent, friendly & efficient. La Scala feels elegant and celebratory at any time of the day.

It had been years since I was at Scala and all my memories were positive. Things change, I guess. My recent experience was a disappointment. The quality of the food was middling. The meatball appetizer swam in grease and the kitchen was overly generous with the salt. The pizza my friend and I shared arrived much too quickly to have been cooked to order and it tasted as if it had been sitting somewhere, waiting for a customer to order it. The drinks were small and over-priced. Indeed, the whole bill was staggering in comparison to the modest order. The only positive impression was the waitress and the vigilant guy always there with a pitcher of water.

Nom nom nom!! Superb Italian food. A bit pricey (159.00) for 2 with 2 cocktails, no dessert but if you want to splurge, Scala's does not disappoint! ❤

Over the years we've been regular diners at Scala's and consistently enjoyed the food and the experience. It appears to us that, since the closing of Kuleto's, Scala's has become busier and significantly more crowded and the level of service and food quality has declined. It's still one of the better choices for Union Square dining but unfortunately in our view it's declined somewhat.--Sad

Went there on a Friday Evening around 7 Pm - Since they completed their remodel the place has gotten VERY LOUD! - hard to have an enjoyable conversation with dinning companions. The menu has been paired down a bit and simplified. Their pasta's were excellent as was their fish. However the Roaster Cauliflower at $9 had a terrible oily and spicy hot drizzled finishing sauce on it which was terrible. Speaking about prices; the Appetizers and Entree prices we felt were a bit overpriced and ABSURD for what you got.

Do not depend on past reviews! This restaurant has undergone many changes in the past few months. It has been redecorated, or maybe we should say redesecrated, transforming one of the loveliest, coziest, most individualistic rooms in SF into a cold, sterile, cookie-cutter space. The menu has been revamped, to what end I am unsure, other than to raise prices and limit the options previously available. A fettucine alfredo tasted suspiciously like it contained cheddar cheese, and was oversauced and gloppy. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. We waited 20 minutes for our bottle of wine, which barely made it to the table before the food arrived. The entire service staff has been replaced, with the long-time waiters no longer there, and one must wonder why. One thing has been retained: they still refuse to seat people before the exact minute of the reservation, even if there are empty tables available (and when we were there on a Wednesday evening at 7:45, there were plenty of empty tables). This restaurant is a shadow of its former self.

Enjoyable dinner on 1st night in SanFran. Just around the block from my hotel which was convenient. Reading the reviews decided for me and didn't disappoint. Had linguine with clams, excellent! Finished with the chocolate mini torte and chiffon dessert. Since i was dining alone, my table was at the window...perfect for people watching and cable car traffic.

Asked the waitress for a recommendation from the menu, couldn’t give one.
We ordered way too much food and she was accommodating in cancelling one of our main meals.
They were also accommodating on a special request cocktail

I have been going to this restaurant for the past 15 years. It is fair to say the food is at its lowest point ever. The selections are limited and very pedestrian. The execution and taste were poor. I went with my wife to lunch on a Saturday. In its’ hayday Scala had a real lunch menu as oppose to a ‘brunchy’ menu with no real lunch main courses. Menu now consists of appetizers, salads, brunch items, sandwiches and pizzas.
The Fritto misto was very salty and the seafood was dry from over cooking. The gem salad was barely dressed with any dressing. As a result it was quite tasteless. The burger and fries were appropriately cooked but the size of the burger and the price charged left much to be desired. The signature desert of Scala was the Bostini cream pie. It’s new interpretation left much to be desired. The desert had very little cake or custard/crema. It was drowned in a chocolate sauce. The old Bostini cream pie was served at a much colder temperature making the chocolate covering almost like ganache. The only consistency of this restaurant was the service. It was excellent. Unfortunately the staff now serves overpriced food worthy of a hotel chain coffee shop rather than at a destination restaurant.

Long time Union Square restaurant. New chef - the food was great. Recently remodeled and with that went the acoustical tiles. So, so, so noisy-it would be impossible to have a business dinner here and even for casual fun was hard to hear what the person across the table was saying. I hope they correct this soon.

A great find in a great location.

If you're looking for fine Italian cuisine in the Union Square area, you can't pass this up. A diverse meanie with a really sharp wait staff. The waiter (Bill) was about as they come with great anticipation of our every need.

Next time I'm in the Bay Area, it's a must stop.

Loud, vibrant Sat night Italian bistro in the heart of SF. If you don’t mind speaking loudly to those at your table, you will enjoy delicious food and excellent service (despite the crowd). We lingered over coffee but were never rushed, despite people cued up waiting for a table. Not inexpensive, but would happily return....
