About Scala's Bistro

Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.

One Caesar salad was overdressed when asking for light on the dressing. They had to redo and I had dressing on the side. Other salad was not that good for a chopped salad. The dessert pear and almond tart was spot on.

Excellent, courteous and prompt service, food was very good. A good place to dine before going to the theatre.

Our lunch there was adequate. Nothing to complain about but nothing to rave about either.
Really noisy even at lunch when one assumes alcohol isn't driving the decibel factor.
Given that it is the holiday season, curious there was so little indication of that in the decor.

Pedestrian at best, sorry to say.

Always good. We come to LA scala every Christmas season. Food is good and service is efficient. It is louder than I remember. But I love the hotel and the proximity to shopping.

A Union Square gem in San Francisco. Have been dining there for years and it only seems to get better each time I visit.

Really disappointed in our holiday dinner with the grandparents. Very noisy, very slow. It’s clear that Scalas could not handle the holiday rush. An hour after we ordered our dinner, we were told that 2 of the entrees were no longer available. After choosing 2 new items, the dinner was delayed again (and over-cooked). Our waiter was very nice, I felt bad for him. Oh well, we will choose a different place for next year’s holiday dinner.

I've been bringing my family to Scala's for the last 30 years. It has become part of the family tradition. I came with my in-laws from Texas last week and was utterly disappointed. The $22 dollar mushroom pizza was for a kid size, my go-to Caesar salad was now a merely few pieces of halves lettuce. $33 for the chicken dish! Something must have happened with the previous kitchen staff. This place doesn't seem to be the same Scala's I knew and loved.

Eat at Scala’s frequently- not sure if this is symptomatic of a decline or they were overwhelmed during holiday season- service was lacking ( sat with an empty glass of wine for 20 minutes, appetizer came before bread and wine) and my salmon selection was bland. Will try again as it is one of my favorites and hope it is a one off.

Always enjoy our family Christmas season dinners at Scala’s. Salmon and risotto were both fantastic. One of the best Manhattans I’ve had in a long time and the bostoni cream pie dessert is one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten.

I’m a fan of this restaurant and have been many times, as the food is consistently good. It’s always busy and pretty much requires a reservation any day of the week. This visit was for brunch and the service was terrible. The waiter was nice, but pretty clueless. The appetizer arrived before we got water or cocktails. The check arrived before desert and espresso. The kids at the table next to us had finished their meal before they ever got their milk, which be mother asked for 3 times.
I still recommend this restaurant, as this was an isolated incident and I can’t imagine he’ll make it as a waiter.

Always a favorite when in the city celebrating the holidays and shopping. As usual, food was great and service was top notch. I did think it was louder than usual and not certain if that is due to the recent remodel.

Dirty glasses & big gaps in service (we poured most of our own wine). Food, although overpriced comparatively to better dining options in the City, was very good. Also, the pan-seared salmon, one of the most iconic dishes in SF for years, is no longer on the menu.

The menu was not special, the food was not memorable and I was super embarrassed that no one, not one person at our table ever mentioned that their food was good. SO very sad. Wait staff was attentive and friendly enough, but unfortunately, our food was just bland and blah. The ladies bathroom took us on a 10 minute journey and the older women we were with had a very hard time as we navigated stairs and elevators to eventually locate the restroom in the hotel down a floor, up 10-12 stairs. I will never ever go back to this restaurant.

Food and service was excellent until it was time for our desert to arrive. It appears our lovely waitress forgot about us. When we asked to cancel, she noticed it was already set out on the prep table for serving. She just forgot about it.
Regardless of the late desert, the lunch and ambience around the holiday season was excellent.

I feel the quality has gone down thru the years. My drink G&T was just fair, very tasteless tonic, pasta dishes we had were ok. Bolognese tasted like pork instead of beef and veal. Glass of Pinot was ok and Fritto Misto was good.

We had been there in the fall for an early dinner before the Symphony and found it to be perfect. This time, on December 4th it was way to loud and noisy. So much so that the 4 of us had trouble talking. I noticed that another table was having issues also. I know that noisy means lots is happening, but this was way too much.

Fish entree was outrageous in price
$40 for one small bony tasteless fish
With awful sides of four mushrooms and 4 or 5 overlooked brussel sprouts
Very disappointed
Blossom appetizer was fantastic
Are reservation was for 5:15 by 5:30 they were out of our choice of salad

We took my sister and her husband to celebrate their wedding anniversary. We love Scala and I think they enjoyed it too. Three of us got the special: short rib over creamy polenta and loved it. The sauce was perfect and not too heavy. The polenta was the perfect accompaniment. The other person got the rigatoni with neat sauce and he loved it. The service is good and not intrusive.

Fabulous as always! Just a great spot to stop and have a delicious salad or margarita pizza when you need a break from shopping. It’s the holidays so Scala’s was bustling. Our waitress was darling. We had a great time.
