Scala's Bistro Ratings and Reviews
I’m a fan of this restaurant and have been many times, as the food is consistently good. It’s always busy and pretty much requires a reservation any day of the week. This visit was for brunch and the service was terrible. The waiter was nice, but pretty clueless. The appetizer arrived before we got water or cocktails. The check arrived before desert and espresso. The kids at the table next to us had finished their meal before they ever got their milk, which be mother asked for 3 times.
I still recommend this restaurant, as this was an isolated incident and I can’t imagine he’ll make it as a waiter.
Dirty glasses & big gaps in service (we poured most of our own wine). Food, although overpriced comparatively to better dining options in the City, was very good. Also, the pan-seared salmon, one of the most iconic dishes in SF for years, is no longer on the menu.
The menu was not special, the food was not memorable and I was super embarrassed that no one, not one person at our table ever mentioned that their food was good. SO very sad. Wait staff was attentive and friendly enough, but unfortunately, our food was just bland and blah. The ladies bathroom took us on a 10 minute journey and the older women we were with had a very hard time as we navigated stairs and elevators to eventually locate the restroom in the hotel down a floor, up 10-12 stairs. I will never ever go back to this restaurant.
Food and service was excellent until it was time for our desert to arrive. It appears our lovely waitress forgot about us. When we asked to cancel, she noticed it was already set out on the prep table for serving. She just forgot about it.
Regardless of the late desert, the lunch and ambience around the holiday season was excellent.
Fish entree was outrageous in price
$40 for one small bony tasteless fish
With awful sides of four mushrooms and 4 or 5 overlooked brussel sprouts
Blossom appetizer was fantastic
Are reservation was for 5:15 by 5:30 they were out of our choice of salad
We took my sister and her husband to celebrate their wedding anniversary. We love Scala and I think they enjoyed it too. Three of us got the special: short rib over creamy polenta and loved it. The sauce was perfect and not too heavy. The polenta was the perfect accompaniment. The other person got the rigatoni with neat sauce and he loved it. The service is good and not intrusive.
Scala’s is a go to to restaurant. The food has always been good but they’ve upped their status from good to fabulous! A recent remodel created a slightly new, refreshed vibe. The menu is perfect. Just enough choices and not too fussy. I highly recommend the burrata as a starter. (wow!) Loved my rigatoni , and I’ve never dined at Scalas without ordering the caesar salad. Bonus points: They popped a fresh bottle of bubbly for me. Thank you Scala’s!
Unfortunately not too good
We had 2 appetizers , one was good parmesan budino , the other was grilled octopus with farro . Octopus was cold and farro greasy.
Ordered whole branzino to share and it actually came while we had the appetizers ! Unforgivable !
They took it back but got more things wrong - too long of a story . Just not a good dining experience .
My friend who was to accompany me got sick the day before, so I dined solo. I was made to feel very welcome, given a great table on the bar level overlooking the restaurant, and received friendly, attentive service. Had the misto appetizer with lightly breaded and fried calamari, shrimp and vegetables with a tasty aioli, followed by ravioli with samples of both marinara and lemon cream sauce. The lemon cream was delicious; marinara was good but not outstanding. I hadn't eaten here since they redecorated, and feared from some comments that the warmth would be gone. Not to fear, it still has that warm cozy bistro feel, just a little more streamlined. It is apparent from the hugs going back and forth between the hostess and guests that Scala's does a lot of repeat business. Overall, one of my favorite places in the Union Square area.
I come to this restaurant often and it normally is extremely enjoyable. Last Friday however the waiter was not good. He didn’t come to the table so we flagged down someone to order cocktails. Then “our” waiter came over to get the order. We had to ask for water and bread. One in the party after waiting for 10 min had to ask for the soup, which waiter obviously had forgotten. Main meal came in middle of salads and before party even had two bites of soup. Waiter never checked back with us to see if everything was ok. Manager did stop by however it was before main meal was served so we chose not to comment at that point. We were first in at the restaurant so there wasn’t a back log of food or people. Getting the check paid was a long experience, which is a normal event in this restaurant. I’m very disappointed as people in my party all from out of town.
