Very good experience overall. Pleasant welcoming by the hostess upon arrival. Quick attention by waiter upon seating and then very good attention throughout. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Wines by the glass reasonable as well. Obviously great location (near Union Square).
Definitely worth a visit...and a return visit.
Nice small Italian, good service, good food, noisy, well located, reasonably priced
We had several business meetings (breakfast and lunch) scheduled at Scala's. The menu has a good variety and the food tasted wonderful. The noise level was a little louder at certain times, but this was fine for our meetings. Everyone enjoyed their meals.
Everything was fabulous! Had gnocchi and meatballs with chianti! Yum!
The restaurant and bar were packed and quite"energetic" even for a Friday night. It was hard to hold a conversation. The food is good and consistent, the portions are reasonable. The price is a bit high, but this is Union square SF. The service was very attentive, knowledgable and fun, even with the large crowd.
I've stayed at the Sir Francis Drake many times but have usually run out to some of my other favorite restaurants when in the city. This time, I had a "free glass of bubbly" coupon that was supplied when the bellman took my bags to my room. That plus the fact that I wasn't looking to go too far off in search of dinner made it a good evening to try Scala Bistro which I could book with my Open Table App very easily. I had Burrata to start and the pork chop entree. I guess I'll try more traditional Italian next time but what I did have was wonderful. They also have a Vermintino by the glass which is rather rare even in Italian restaurants. My favorite thing of the night was that the hostess, Natalie, was engaging. She spoke with many of the patrons but did circle back to have a chat with me several times, all which made the dining experience better. Cheers to Natalie.
Very pleasant and enjoyable. We will return.
Was not seated on top floor as reserved.
Food and service was excellent! I will definitely go back again soon!
Hostess was not the warmest person! Food was good but pasta not cooked all the way which was papparedelle. We had 2 waiters ...we were impressed with the dessert.
Great. Love the place.
Food, atmosphere and service were awesome! I‘ll visit this restaurant again when I‘m in SF next time... :-)
Scala’s is always our travel day restaurant and has been for nearly 20 years. The service and food never ever disappoint!
Nice attention to our table and prompt service. The fusilli was not originally overcooked and the sun-dry tomato sauce was very good. Unfortunately it was extremely hot from the lamps, which tended to overcook the pasta. Your chef would not have been happy with that part of the job. Also, a bit pricey for the whole experience.
We were nicely accommodated in a booth per our request so that our service dog could be under the table and not obstruct the aisle. Our server was excellent, we were not rushed whatsoever. We started with oysters and an heirloom tomato salad which we shared. The salad was plenty for two. We then shared the Wood Fired Oven Whole Fish (branzino- a type of bass) served with head and tail over yummy eggplant camponata. The fish was done to perfection with crispy skin. It was delicious and our server boned it right at the table. The fish was also plenty for the two of us. We then shared the blackberry sorbet. Entire dinner was wonderful and it was a most enjoyable evening. I also love the decor with the dark woods and brass rails. I always have the feeling of stepping back in time a bit when dining at Scala's. Though the restaurant got busy and therefore quite a bit noisier, we were not rushed at all. Highly recommend!
Had an amazing breakfast experience, our waiter Jesus was so sweet and got us everything we needed and then some! It was my birthday weekend and he brought me out a special birthday dessert, and the service was already excellent before that. I can't wait to go back sometime!
Wonderful Maitre D who accommodated my wishes perfectly .
Favorite union square stop: excellent. Salads and pasta and meatballs.
Scalia's is consistently good...professional and pleasant staff...
Will not be disappointed with your meal. Consistent, great quality & taste!
Outstanding service from Adrian and Bruce. Please thank them!
Good food, nice atmosphere, great service.
Excellent choice for great food and service. Natalie makes everyone feel valued and welcome. Mary is a great server.
Great service and excellent food as always. The pappardelle and mushroom and prosciutto pizza had wonderful flavors. Can’t wait to go again.
The food was out of this world!! A little pricey for the portions. Our server was nice but not very conversational. It was a great spot to suit many preferences.
While the service was very good. I felt that the server is a seasoned salesman. He kept trying to upsell. Good for him and his employer.
The Burrata needed help, a bit dry and chewy.
The dessert was ok. Not exceptional. We ordered tiramisu. Which was also pricey for what it was. $11.00.
Yes I knew coming in that it was a pricey establishment. But charging double digits for dessert should have been made with gold.
Muy buen restaurante italiano en el corazón de Union Square. Servicio amigable y platillos deliciosos
Wine list was really great and food is soo good!!
We used to eat there all the time this was our go to place. Things change no clams and Linguine. Oh well. What I had the Fussilli pasta was average. My wife Halibut was dry or over cooked with no flavor.
Natalie starts the evening with her beautiful welcoming smile. Bruce is the best server and the meal was outstanding! I highly recommend Scala’s to anyone who wants a wonderful meal an d dining experience!
I love Scala's for a special dinner. The olives are my favorite.
Dining at Scala's Bistro is always a wonderful and memorable experience. From the moment you walk in off of busy Powell street, you are greeted sincerely and made to feel very appreciative for selecting this restaurant to dine at. Bruce, our waiter, was very attentive and has a wonderful dry sense of humor. He is exceptional in his attention to your requests. For example, my wife loves her salmon very well done and it came exactly as she ordered it. The caesar salad is scrumptious as each individual leaf of romaine is coated with their delicious vinaigrette dressing. My butcher block steak was cooked to perfection, and it exploded with flavor. And save room for their delicious Bostini Cream Pie. And last, a very respectable wine list that is moderately priced. The Patz and Hall Pinot Noir was delicious!
Waiter is rude and environment is so noisy. The table is small. We couldn’t enjoy good conversation.
A+++ great food and great service from the bartender, to the host, to the waiter.
I am a frequent diner at Scala's and highly recommend the restaurant to anyone... visitor or resident.
The food is consistently ranging from "very good" to "excellent". The servers, especially at breakfast, are considerate, listen well and honor your presence... this is probably the main reason I dine here frequently. The managers are also warm, friendly and accommodating, even during their busiest hours. Given their close proximity to Union Square, and the fact that they are located within the Sir Francis Drake hotel, makes them a very popular choice to dine. I highly recommend making a reservation.
My fig and pancetta pizza was amazing! The juxtaposition of the salty ham and cheese with the beautiful sweet fig was delicious. Highly recommended!
Great service, awesome food
The food was great! Highly recommend the gnocchi.
Very good. Parpadelle with pork is a must try the short ribs wow and baby lettuce with pines-crusted goat cheese over a good medium body red wine plus servings are good enough to share. For Teo celebrating way to go. Bread not warm which s a little odd but they toasted a little bit for us (so good). No decanter for a good red wine which is weird compare to the wine selection in house.
