The food at Scala's was the best. The wine list was superb. The service was great, always checking on you and never rushing you out. I can't say enough about this place. A must go to if in San Francisco.
Was told about Scala's by a local foodie and he was spot on. Very good food, great service and we loved it so much we made a reservation for 8 the very next night. Without asking, we were given a wonderful semi-private room perfect for a small group. It was everything we wanted and more! A must have for an appetizer, the squash blossom pizza! This will be a San Fran staple when we return.
My friend and I love the clam pasta. However, we would expect more choices for pasta and pizzas.
The most uncomfortable aspect is the seating layout, which is back-to-back with another table. It was really disturbing when someone has to stand up, push the chair back and let people to pass through!!!
We took out of town guests to dinner before a ACT play. The waiter was helpful in suggesting itemss on the menu. Pizzas, risotto, soup,salads...everything was fresh and flavorful.
Food and service were outstanding. Very lively bar scene. Wonderful atmosphere.
The service, ambiance, wine list, bread baskets, and Caesar salad were fantastic, but the entrees were disappointing. We never would have expected a top SF restaurant to serve $30 Wild King Salmon medium-well, skin side up, and barely still warm. Partly our fault for not requesting medium-rare or sending it back, but we were stunned. The linguine and clams were rather dry, so we added the table olive oil to try to moisten it up. We dined at 5:30 on a Thursday eve before a concert, so the kitchen couldn't have been too busy. Would come back again for the ambiance, wine, and appetizers.
Excellent dining experience in downtown San Francisco.
Food and service was outstanding. Recommended.
I have been twice now, and it has been great both times. Will definitely be back.
The food and service were excellent. The prices were a little high. A dinner for 4 with one bottle of wine cost $235.
Always great; food, service, atmosphere, my "must go to" restaurant for myself, friends and visitors to the Bay Area.
Had reservations for a party of 6:00 on Saturday evening and 4 of our party were late. Yet the hostesses greeted us with a smile and seated the two of us immediately. From the very start, the service and food were excellent. I had the halibut as did my date. We have never had a more succulent, tasty dish. We highly recommend Scala's.
Love Scala's and dine there every trip to San Francisco.
Consistent with very good food. There must be a new chef (I have not been here for awhile) as the menu has changed and the prices are higher. They had a good prefix lunch choice on the menu, I think it was $22 for 3 courses. They gave my friend a gratis mini Boston Cream Pie (Bostini) as it was her birthday.
This Restaurant has delicious well balanced Italian Cuisine . I do recommend it a lot if you stay in San Francisco. It' s a MUST !
I have dined there many times....It is delightful after hours of shopping..Close to The Square..Great cocktails..........
The service and food was fantastic! The eggplant brushetta was to die for!! A must go restaurant when in San Franscico! Don't forget to make reservations, but if you don't, the wait is only about 45 minutes.
Scala's never disappoints! I have enjoyed this restaurant for years every time I'm in San Francisco. The service and food are always fabulous!
Food was amazing: sea scallops, halibut, prawns and pasta, corn chowder, ravioli. We were all happy with our dishes. Spring Fling drink was yummy! (I had two!!)
Amazing. Delicious. Amazing. Delicious. Amazing.
Food was delicious and fresh, as always. Service was friendly but a little too slow for my tastes during a lunch hour on a weekday, when people often have places to get to.
Excellent experience! Food was great, service was exceptional! We would go back in an instance!
Top quality food in the heart of union square. You don't have to go to North Beach for quality Italian food
This is a go-to favorite. Everything is done the right way...from Natalie at the front to the service to the food and wine.
The steak was excellent, but the white prawns dish was dissapointing - very small shrimp. However, the restaraunt immediately replaced it with an alternate choice at no additional cost.
Always very good. Just wish there were more light choices at lunchtime.
The servers are always helpful, & welcoming.
My second time to this restaurant. First time was a large group, which was handled flawlessly. This time, two of us and excellent again. The food was delicious and the service impeccable.
We had a fantastic server, and a great seat. I'd always recommend it.
Thanks for another good meal and special birthday.
What a fantastic find - food was great, service was informative and professional, great scene.
Definately a restaurant to go to again.
The food and service were both terrific. The small restaurant has a great atmosphere - lively and fun. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wines. My Papardella with pork was absolutely exquisite. My bf had the linguine and clams and loved them. What an excellent restaurant - I would highly recommend!
scalas was absolutely great we had a server "Shannon that has been there for years and knew the menu inside and out ,her recommendations were fantastic and the new chef they have is great. The flavors were extraordinary and the dinner was a highlight to our weekend in SF , although we have been to scalas four times previous we are never disappointed
Scala's Bistro is my favorite lunch/brunch spot near Union Square, whether before a matinee at ACT, or during a shopping-and-meeting-friends day. The food is consistently excellent -- with many stand-bys such as Cobb salad or eggs benedict deserving of best-in-class recognition.
Black squid spaghetti and the salmom dish were very good, as well as the salads.
Excellent food and service. The dinner was superb! My husband and I both had fish. He had a Wild Salmon and I a Halibut. Both were incredibly prepared. Love the fact Scala's has wine by the glass, carafe and bottle and a nice selection. The desserts were fabulous as well. Must also a little tip, Scala's is a wonderful place for breakfast! The cost is similar or less than a well-known diner restaurant across the street but the food and service are a 100 times better. We will be back to Scala's again very soon!
Food was great. Atmosphere was excellent. Wait staff and hosts were very attentive
Tables were somewhat crowded and placed too close together. However the food was outstanding!
A disappointment! The food was not seasoned and therefore tasteless. I will not go back and do not recommend it as there are plenty of wonderful restaurants in San Fran to enjoy.
Scala was a late night choice for us after attending the theater. We are locals who had heard of Scala but had not had the opportunity to give it a try. We were thoroughly delighted with the varied menu and being seafood lovers, our choices of moule frite to start, then the special octopus risotto, and the clams with linguini were all wonderfully prepared and presented.
We went to Scala's on the recommendation of a friend and were not disappointed. The food was excellent and the service outstanding. We will likely return on our next visit to San Francisco.
Great for pre- or post-theater event. Wait staff was very conscientious and mindful of our theater time. Also his suggestions with menu selection was on the mark.
