Had a wonderful experience celebrating a friend’s 50th birthday. The food was incredible and the service was amazing!
It was a great evening. Our food was great and our server was amazing
Scala's Bistro has good food and is centrally located in downtown San Francisco, close to theaters and a night out on the town. We had great service but I do think that $100. for a plate of pasta, a small pizza and two glasses of wine plus a small cappuccino is a lot of money!
The food was excellent but it was way too expensive. The service was average, and the kitchen was a little delayed due to valentines.
This was our first time to Scala. The food was very good and service excellent.
Great as usual
Our annual sF visit
The lovely woman at the front desk is always a pleasure to see and chat with
Wine list states incorrect vintage. Pricing and vintage should reflect appropriately.
It was my first time coming to this restaurant and it was amazing the service was great and the food was great. If you want to come here I recommend it and bring money and not so pricey but worth to try. Thank you for a good service Meghan
It is convenient to shopping and my favorite hotel and I love the historic building.
I have been going there for many years... every time I visit SF.
Menu has changed and I am missing some of my favorites, though
Our service was outstanding, delightful wait staff, but the lobster risotto was very disappointing. No flavor! The meatballs and red sauce, outstanding!
We booked La Scala for an anniversary dinner and were not disappointed. Our special occasion was noted and we were given a window seat and in San Francisco that's priceless! Our waiter, Jeremy, was knowledgeable about all areas of the menu and wine list. We had a great Caesar said and the mist delicious rigatoni I've had in years with a meat sauce without tomatoes! And we were gifted with dessert. Overall, one of our best meals in recent history and best service all weekend. We will return again and again.
One of our favorite restaurants, never disappoints!
We came for lunch Saturday and found it pretty easy to enjoy a leisurely meal. I had the portabello mushroom sandwich and my hubby had the rigatoni. Nice place to watch people going up and down Powell Street.
From the Hostess (very efficient, friendly and professional) to the food, everything was excellent. As a tourist in San Francisco I would recommend Scala’s. The clientele was a good mix of local professionals and tourists as it’s right off Union Square. All 3 courses we chose (pear salad, pastas and budino) were delicious. Service was very good. Book in advance if possible.
Got together with someone I hadn't seen in more than 20 years; wanted a place centrally located and offering a variety of tasty fare. Scala's was just what we needed -- both of us enjoyed our meals very much, and the environment was perfect for catching up ... the maître d' even placed us at a window table, so we had a good view of the passing scene.
The Food was o'k for some, not so good for others. The ravioli was overcooked, and the Marinara was bland. The appetizers arrived late, and at the same time as the entrees. Appetizers were cold (not supposed to be). If we hadn't been so hungry and already waited for so long we would have left. The Maitre'D was charming....bright spot of the restaurant. Will not go back.
The service was quick and prompt and the waiter was very keen on making sure my dietary needs were met regarding dairy free options.
We eat there a couple of times per year. We always sit at a high top in the bar area. Real nice atmosphere. Food always good. Nice wine choices.
The cocktail and Caesar salad were great! Bolognese was blah and the fettuccine with clams way too spicy to have with our pinot noir. Had to order a glass of white for myself and still it was too hot. The service is quick and responsive but our waiter was kind of brusque. Not at all friendly and when I mentioned how spicy my fish was, he said “the menu mentions it has peppers”. True but rude I thought. So no I wouldn’t recommend. I feel bad because I really wanted to like this place especially the food!
Excellent food. Excellent service
We have been to this restaurant before, had forgotten how great it is. The ravioli is sumptuous, the waiters suggestion of half and half sauce choice was really terrific.
Excellent service. Food was well presented and good.
I loved the retro feel. Good wine and cocktails. Bartender very accommodating.
Good dining option before or after theater at the Geary, Curren and other Union Square area theaters. Professional and accommodating wait staff and fresh, local ingredients.
Delicious!! Ordered the fettuccine special which has caviar on top. The pairing went well. Service was on point as well.
One of our absolute favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The pasta is perfection - you will not be disappointed! I would suggest reservations - it's always busy!
Great location, wait staff and menu. The meatballs in marinara were exceptional.
Food was wonderful. Table position was horrible. No server showed up at the table for 20 minutes.
Four of us celebrated a late Christmas here in January while I was staying at the St. Francis. It was perfect. From the minute we walked in we knew we were in for a great night. Our waiter, wish I had his name, was just terrific. Took care of my sister's gluten free needs easily and watched out for her the whole meal (pointing out what had gluten and what didn't in the appetizers and took anything with gluten out of her salad and meal). The food was fabulous, the rose cremant a steal and perfect with our meal and our booth cozy. I came down for breakfast the next day. I would eat here again next time I am in the city. The menu is varied enough to find something for everyone which is a real plus
Waiter was rude. food not really good. very loud in the restaurant.
No Thank you.
We came for a quiet evening after a busy business trip, and enjoyed our dinner and ambiance. We got the great table we requested and had excellent service, nice meal, and could walk back to the Union Square hotel we were in. Wonderful!
The food is delish. It was a bit noisy, but overall great place.
Disappointing at best.
I’m assuming this is a California thing next w to cut costs that Saturday is now brunch with an extremely limited menu.
I grew up in a San Francisco where brunch was a big Sunday thing. Paying over $100 for brunch for two does not cut it with me.
Very noisy and cold if seated in line with the door.
A warm, cozy experience.
Terrific service of wonderful cuisine and libations.
You MUST try the Parmesan budino! It was sooooo delicious!
I love Scala’s! It is casual old school San Francisco with great food. I have been many times and it is always terrific. A San Francisco’s standard
Scala’s is a long time favorite. This time was just ok...food and service and wine. Acceptable, but not up to my other experiences here.
Good restaurant for a quick meal before the theater. Loved that they have a decent wine by the glass program since I drink mostly red and European and my friend is a Prosecco girl. Food was good but nothing special. Service was good and the server was attentive. I would do a repeat performance for sure!
We dine often at Scala's as our favorite restaurant on Union Square. We didn't realize the Sunday afternoon menu is brunch and we didn't desire breakfast food at 3:30 PM. We ordered delicious soup and shared a Mushroom Pizza showing ingredients Garlic confit, crescenza cheese, prosciutto & arugula, and we requested added red sauce (barely detectable). Unfortunately, it was doused with vinegar and the taste was overbearing. It was the first time we didn't enjoy an entree and I like good vinegar but my hubby isn't a fan. Our nice waiter seems surprised the pizza had vinegar which made me wonder if it was a fluke?
Met our nephew who was in town on college break.
Had an ‘ok’ lunch but I learned my lesson as I thought the lunch menu during the week would include Saturday as well and that the brunch menu was only reserved for Sunday.
Needless to say, that at 2:45 on a Saturday, we were not looking for brunch. My mistake but remember this if you are looking for a restaurant for lunch on a weekend in the Union Square neighborhood.
