About Scala's Bistro

Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.

We enjoyed our pork chop dinner cooked to the right temp and moist not dry. Service from bar was great. Hostess was rude.

Food and service was excellent until it was time for our desert to arrive. It appears our lovely waitress forgot about us. When we asked to cancel, she noticed it was already set out on the prep table for serving. She just forgot about it.
Regardless of the late desert, the lunch and ambience around the holiday season was excellent.

I feel the quality has gone down thru the years. My drink G&T was just fair, very tasteless tonic, pasta dishes we had were ok. Bolognese tasted like pork instead of beef and veal. Glass of Pinot was ok and Fritto Misto was good.

Wonderful wait person! I am a vegetarian and had the risotto (amazing). My husband had scallops and friend had the salmon. Creative and delicious. Atmosphere was very festive. Great evening.

Fish entree was outrageous in price
$40 for one small bony tasteless fish
With awful sides of four mushrooms and 4 or 5 overlooked brussel sprouts
Very disappointed
Blossom appetizer was fantastic
Are reservation was for 5:15 by 5:30 they were out of our choice of salad
Huh?

Do not recommend for a quiet or special dinner. Food you can find anywhere for half the cost. Real busy and noisy.

We took my sister and her husband to celebrate their wedding anniversary. We love Scala and I think they enjoyed it too. Three of us got the special: short rib over creamy polenta and loved it. The sauce was perfect and not too heavy. The polenta was the perfect accompaniment. The other person got the rigatoni with neat sauce and he loved it. The service is good and not intrusive.

Fabulous as always! Just a great spot to stop and have a delicious salad or margarita pizza when you need a break from shopping. It’s the holidays so Scala’s was bustling. Our waitress was darling. We had a great time.

Scala’s is a go to to restaurant. The food has always been good but they’ve upped their status from good to fabulous! A recent remodel created a slightly new, refreshed vibe. The menu is perfect. Just enough choices and not too fussy. I highly recommend the burrata as a starter. (wow!) Loved my rigatoni , and I’ve never dined at Scalas without ordering the caesar salad. Bonus points: They popped a fresh bottle of bubbly for me. Thank you Scala’s!

Loved and miss the old ambiance and feel of the restaurant before they changed it. Almost like it lost its old soul. Sad to see it gone. Food was still amazing though. Great service. Great drinks.

Unfortunately not too good
We had 2 appetizers , one was good parmesan budino , the other was grilled octopus with farro . Octopus was cold and farro greasy.
Ordered whole branzino to share and it actually came while we had the appetizers ! Unforgivable !
They took it back but got more things wrong - too long of a story . Just not a good dining experience .

My friend who was to accompany me got sick the day before, so I dined solo. I was made to feel very welcome, given a great table on the bar level overlooking the restaurant, and received friendly, attentive service. Had the misto appetizer with lightly breaded and fried calamari, shrimp and vegetables with a tasty aioli, followed by ravioli with samples of both marinara and lemon cream sauce. The lemon cream was delicious; marinara was good but not outstanding. I hadn't eaten here since they redecorated, and feared from some comments that the warmth would be gone. Not to fear, it still has that warm cozy bistro feel, just a little more streamlined. It is apparent from the hugs going back and forth between the hostess and guests that Scala's does a lot of repeat business. Overall, one of my favorite places in the Union Square area.

Little green salad was very good. The carpaccio was rather bland and the risotto was too watery with a mild flavor. It had too much carrot vs rice. Good service. Very noisy.

I come to this restaurant often and it normally is extremely enjoyable. Last Friday however the waiter was not good. He didn’t come to the table so we flagged down someone to order cocktails. Then “our” waiter came over to get the order. We had to ask for water and bread. One in the party after waiting for 10 min had to ask for the soup, which waiter obviously had forgotten. Main meal came in middle of salads and before party even had two bites of soup. Waiter never checked back with us to see if everything was ok. Manager did stop by however it was before main meal was served so we chose not to comment at that point. We were first in at the restaurant so there wasn’t a back log of food or people. Getting the check paid was a long experience, which is a normal event in this restaurant. I’m very disappointed as people in my party all from out of town.

We’ve enjoyed many meals at Scala’s, so when we decided we didn’t want to cook on thanksgiving, we were happy to find a table open there. What a disappointment. It was a 3 course fixed price thanksgiving dinner, with turkey, roast beef or risotto as the main course choices. The starter salad dressing was so watery it was flavorless. The turkey was dry as sawdust. It came with a puddle of watery mashed potatoes, a handful of string beans and a pile of stuffing that tasted of rancid oil— no cranberry, gravy, yams or other sides. The beef was overdone, gray and fatty. And it came with the same sides as the turkey. Pumpkin pie filling was ok, but crust was a soggy mess. $75 per person for a no love, no thought meal. Truly disappointing. We left feeling like we should have stayed home and ordered out Chinese. The one bright spot was the friendly and professional hostess. But even she probably won’t draw us back after that meal.

Sadly, our delicious meal was not able to carry an evening where we were stranded at our table for an hour and fifteen minutes. During this very long time there was no attention from our server despite making eye contact frequently. The server was aware of the issue and simply didn’t care. It’s hard to have a convivial dinner when you are being showered with disrespect.

Reservation recommended. Starving after driving in that afternoon, Service was slow, eggs beni were served super raw, not safe to eat and sent back. My veggie burger was good. Server was kind and fun just didn't check on us that often. I had to wait until I was almost done eating to get ketchup. FYI - this is a pet friendly restaurant & hotel(indoors) not good if you're allergic which we didn't know when I made reservations on open table. Luckily we got a table near the bar where there were no dogs. Weekend of Nov 18th is a huge convention here for service animals, avoid this place if you are allergic or worried about pet dander on you or your food. They were all good pups, just not used to them being inside of restaurants where we live.
