About Scala's Bistro

Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.

Scala’s is a long time favorite. This time was just ok...food and service and wine. Acceptable, but not up to my other experiences here.

Good restaurant for a quick meal before the theater. Loved that they have a decent wine by the glass program since I drink mostly red and European and my friend is a Prosecco girl. Food was good but nothing special. Service was good and the server was attentive. I would do a repeat performance for sure!

We dine often at Scala's as our favorite restaurant on Union Square. We didn't realize the Sunday afternoon menu is brunch and we didn't desire breakfast food at 3:30 PM. We ordered delicious soup and shared a Mushroom Pizza showing ingredients Garlic confit, crescenza cheese, prosciutto & arugula, and we requested added red sauce (barely detectable). Unfortunately, it was doused with vinegar and the taste was overbearing. It was the first time we didn't enjoy an entree and I like good vinegar but my hubby isn't a fan. Our nice waiter seems surprised the pizza had vinegar which made me wonder if it was a fluke?

Met our nephew who was in town on college break.
Had an ‘ok’ lunch but I learned my lesson as I thought the lunch menu during the week would include Saturday as well and that the brunch menu was only reserved for Sunday.
Needless to say, that at 2:45 on a Saturday, we were not looking for brunch. My mistake but remember this if you are looking for a restaurant for lunch on a weekend in the Union Square neighborhood.

Scala’s Bistro was once upon a time a find dining establishment. I just don’t understand why management would turn it into a coffee shop. I will never eat there again.

During the JPM conference Scalia's can get very busy. We had booked our table weeks ahead (5:15pm), arrived on time, but were soon met by a surly waiter who immediately told us that we needed to vacate the table as soon as possible because it was booked again 90 minutes later or so. He was inpatient when we ordered, gave us a hard time when we asked for an ice cooler for our wine, and on several other occasions made us feel completely unwelcome. To make matters worse, his attention to details was lacking, though the other support staff (non-waiters) tried to help (replacing silver, bread). Plates were removed from table while people were still eating, ridiculous. Because of their proximity to the Westin and Union Square, I'm sure they will always be full during JPM, however, if this behavior is repeated I'm certain their patrons will choose another restaurant during other non-conference times. Wake up, Scalia's. You are nothing special and if you treat your patrons this way you will be certain to fail over the long-term. Waiter was ~55-60 y.o., 5' 10" or so, white, thinning grey hair, stocky, with big frown on his face. Avoid.

Our family enjoy the food here! And a little bit noise but the service here is good! The taste here is fine~ we love the bread and the pizza here! Salmon is good, steak not as good as Ruth Chris, also the green salad is okay~ Linguine is not that attractive here! We had that in Anchor Castro area is great! All in all We had good time here for the birthday

I specifically picked this restaurant for my girlfriends birthday because it had her favorite meal on their online menu. When we arrived at the restaurant our server told us that veal piccata had not been on their menu for years. It was a huge disappointment. The meals that we did get were mediocre and the wine was ridiculously overpriced ($19 a glass for a Cab.... Comical). Overall the experience was not great and I would only recommend this restaurant to those that want to overpay and still be disappointed.

Worst restaurant experience ever ! Our reservation was 10:15pm. We arrive 10:10pm, they told us to wait 10 minutes. Finally after one hour (65 minutes later) they gave us our table. The waiter was very rude (I don’t want to serve you attitude), and told us that the kitchen was closing down, and to be fast to order, even though sitting us one hour later was the restaurant lack of organization and professionalism. It was New Year’s Eve and we wanted to enjoy the fire works show, but thanks to all this we missed the show and they kill the spirit of the NYE celebration. When it was closed to midnight, we wanted to order a glass of champagne but they said the bar was closed, when they were serving champagne to the few tables left. I don’t know if it was racism or just extremely bad service, but Scala’s totally ruined our NYE. I would never come here ever again. I live in San Francisco and the restaurant industry is very competitive. If you want to have a good or just regular experience never go to Scala’s

Our experience was just ok...it was New Years Eve so of course we expected chaos and high activity, but even with a reservation we had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. Once seated service was prompt and pretty efficient. The noise level was deafening..I had to practically scream to be heard by my husband. Exhausting! Our food was ok, but just not hot enough..everything was lukewarm...I hate that...the dessert we opted for was also nothing special. The best part was the price...3 cocktails, 1 glass of wine, an appetizer, 2 entrees and a dessert...$200! For dinner in SF (especially on New Years Eve) this was a deal. Oh, and that included the tip.

All 5 in our party agree best meal in a long time! Celebrated New Years Eve here. Scalops, King Salmon, Main Lobster & 2 Ravioli 1/2 red sauce 1/2 white sauce. - liked the white sauce a wee bit more than red. - Margarite pizza as appetizer. Wonderful Service. A bit loud but it was New Years eve.

We had a wonderful New Year's Eve dinner! We started with Fritto Misto (fried seafood and seasonal veggies). Seafood was great, a few veggie bits were a mystery to us. Dinner was the ravioli with marinara sauce and linguine. Both were filling and tasty. Best part was the Boston "pie" afterwards! Heavenly!

A busy restaurant in the middle of the Union Square shopping district. Very crowded, but we did have a reservation through Open Table, and after a rather lengthy wait our party of four was led to a table. Unfortunately, the table was not located IN the restaurant. It was a four-topper in an aisle at the front of the place by the window, on the opposite side of the reception desk from the actual restaurant, alongside the constantly opening door, the herding area for crowds waiting to get in, and the elevator to the toilets -- and beneath the bar area (with scarves and coats hanging above us). We had waited so long that our group decided to take the table. But I do not feel we were able to experience the Scala’s we anticipated.

Suggestion: Save those tables apart from the restaurant for the walk-ins. When I make a reservation at a restaurant, I’d like to be seated IN the restaurant. The food? Eh.

Scala’s has a creative menu. Our first time there and were were surprised by the noise level. The pork was delicious and a generous portion as was the Veal. Caesar salad was delicious too-especially the dressing! Wine and food prices are high-a bit unreasonable. The noise and for dinner, lack of dinner atmosphere was disappointing (no tablecloths or candles). Reservations a must.

We were a little disappointed that the new chef has changed the menu and at least one of our favorites is no longer available.
Waiter was excellent, but they were quite busy--but this was the day after Christmas so easy to understand why.

Linguine with clams was outstanding!

Disappointed:
- we had high expectations, but the breakfast on Christmas day was nothing, but ordinary.
- food was average - nothing to mention. With my order I missed ordering toasts - I asked and I got them immediately, but they were not freshly done: cold and over toasted.
- nothing that would really differentiate the breakfast on Christmas morning from other days - from the ambiance stand point.
We went there to celebrate a birth day and I mentioned that while making a reservation via OpenTable, but I do not know why I was even asked about that since no one paid any attention to that.

We used to eat here several times a month and always dinner on Christmas eve - now they close at 3 PM on Christmas Eve and the menu is "brunch" which is not friendly at all to a health conscious eater - gone are the mussels and fries and in its place a bistro burger that is "so-so" as there are way better burgers in San Francisco such as at Roam. The service is usually great to but fell off on this visit - overall a classic SF spot reworked to perhaps appeal to tourists? In the end this native not likely to go back and we are already discussing where will be our new Christmas Eve tradition to eat dinner on Union Square.

We were very disappointed. This is a restaurant that we have been going to for many years- since they opened- to celebrate special events. This Open Table Reservation was a visit after perhaps 3 years. We found the quality of food greatly declined. We will not go there again....there are plenty of excellent restaurants in SF to chose from- Scala is not one of them sadly.
