We were really looking forward to coming here having scouted it out in the past, wanting some good Italian in a friendly atmosphere. But there was a large party of about 40 when we walked in, which was very, very loud, boisterous and shouting out at times so we could barely hear each other speak. At first they sat us at a very small table close to that table and after asking to move put us at a larger table but even closer. We decided to leave but they offered us a third table further away but still the noise was deafening. They encouraged us to stay by saying they would try to move the large party to a private room or would tell them to be quieter but neither happened. We could barely hear each other talk so it wasn't the kind of atmosphere we wanted. Really wished they had just apologized, maybe offered us a free drink and suggested we come back another time. We bought our drinks and paid for them ourselves and the wine wasn't all that good either. Doubt we'll come back now. Okay if want to be in a bar scene with loud people drinking and oblivious to those around them, but if you want a date night dinner out, would not recommend it.
Always a great dining experience at Scala’s from the gracious hostess to the wait staff. It was a special occasion ( wedding anniversary) which I noted in the reservation. We were greeted warmly with congratulations and recipients a lovely celebratory dessert!
We all loved almost all of our food, however the Cauliflower soup was over seasoned, I couldn’t taste the cauliflower and it was almost brown in color, I expected a lighter white creamy color, kind of unappetizing.
server with very polite and explained very meal we were asking about? The food was great and the restaurant was quiet. Plan to go there before every Broadway Production.
Our experience at Scala’s Bistro was very good. The food was very good especially the pasta with fresh crab. The service was attentive, she didn’t try to rush us even though we were there more than 2 and 1/2 hrs. The Bostonians for desert isn’t as good as it used to be but still good. One complaint is the cost. In addition to increase in prices for the food and tip tacking on other charges makes dining here very expensive. Reinforces staying in the East bay to dine.
We wanted to book somewhere close to our hotel, we were not disappointed with this restaurant. Only a 5-0 min walk. It was a Wednesday night , a bit late, 7:45 pm, they had plenty of open tables. We were seated right a way. The wine we had was excellent. We had a few questions for our waiter, who had no problem telling us how the artichoke was prepared. We went for the asparagus ( a side dish) as an appetizer. The asparagus were the big , juicy kind, prepared excellently. I had the Caesar salad & a frito misto ( 2 appetizers) but the serving size was big. Enough for 3 to share. Needless to say, my husband & I were well fed.
The only thing at the end of the night was the bill. There was the SFO Health Mandate tax an extra 4%, then the gratuity, then the city tax. In total of 3 taxes on top of the food charge. As a tourist we were felt a bit ripped off, but what can a tourist do? The waiter said some restaurants would put the health tax in the food cost ( hidden tax) but now we know why the food costs is priced what it is.
We went to this restaurant as our last itinerary of our America trip.
We had a soup, pasta, fritto and they were really awesome, especially the pasta was the best I've ever eaten.
What's more, I was touched by their thankful services.
My girl friend had stomachache at that time then they gave her a cup of hot water and cared so much.
To sum up, I strongly recommend this restaurant both for couples and families!
I’ve eaten here many times over many years. It is consistently excellent.
Scala’s is a beautiful upscale restaurant. I loved their specialty cocktails, and everything food wise was great. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs (although a bit over-smiley) and all of my needs were met, and then some! Would most certainly come back, even if just for drinks
Lovely experience.
I always have an amazing time at Scala’s! I go almost every time I am in San Francisco. The food is delicious and the servers are so kind. I would reccomend this restaurant to anyone in SF!
The main dishes were very good but the sides of vegetables were overdone. Great service and ambiance! I will continue to go there!
Slow service, expensive and not that tasty. Low value for the buck
Waiter was amazing. Food was great.
Brought our friend a special birthday dessert!
Historic, lovely old world style interior, with outstanding service. Appetizers were stand-outs, enjoyed every bite.
Very disappointing. We were here for our 40th wedding anniversary and staff congratulated us. Starters (salads) were good but my main course was delivered while I was still eating my first course!! We both chose the fish which was oily and not at all special. It tasted similar to mackerel. Water was only served once and the bill was presented while we were still eating our desert. Very unprofessional. Also, very expensive, about $200+ and we felt really rushed. The place was virtually empty too. My husband was furious, as we'd come to SF from the UK to visit family and this place was chosen for this special anniversary after visiting many years ago. Would not recommend Scala at all.
Excellent Food and amazing customer service. Clean well appointed venue. Great wine selection and a very good menu. A true treat to have lunch or dinner in the heart of Union Square.
We've loved Scala's for years - NEVER have had a bad meal there! Their menu was updated this time with healthy, close to fresh options that tasted great, authentic. We are always glad we have Open Table reservations, allowing us to wade through the waiting walk up throngs to the front of the Maitre d's desk.
I wanted to take my girlfriend to a nice dinner and came across this place. I was blown away by the service, the gentleman that was serving us was spectacular. Always made sure we were taking care of. The food was amazing, she had the ravioli and I got the wood baked pizza and had tons of flavor. The scene was very nice, wasn’t too loud or quiet, was just right. It was an amazing experience and will becoming back soon.
Great food but they unfortunately sold out of the special by 630:(
We were greeted right away and seated. The staff was very friendly. Food was excellent.
Wait staff was attentive. Food was very good.
Valentines Day!😍
Food is good!
Super great meal with perfect service from beginning to end. So glad we chose this restaurant for valentine's day! Had great wine pizza and pastas.. definitely get the crab pasta delish. Thanks!
Edible Italian fare dreadfully overpriced. But what can one expect in SF?
Excellent service and the food was exceptional! We dine there often, but on this particular evening the Caesar Salad was better than ever, and the raviolis were wonderful!
Have eaten here many times over many years—consistently excellent menu and service.
What a find! Excellent meal throughout. The food was excellent, the service was impeccable and the ambiance was great. I would highly recommend it!!!
The service was great! Everyone was very attentive & the food was delicious. I enjoyed my meal. Would recommend!
Reliable after theater dinner. Octopus appetizer was outstanding, rest of the dinner good but nothing special.
Recommend by friends from Australia and Crab Pasta is a favorite of ours. At 7.30 reservation they had run out of crab. Disappointed.
From cocktails at the bar to dessert. all recommendations were excellent. Haven't eaten here in awhile and will definitely be back!
Excellent everything!
Fantastic service, felt special and at home.
Excellent service and outstanding food.
Server was MIA. Will not be returning.
Seats to tight. Food was good service was Ok
We had the most wonderful server. I’m sorry that I didn’t get his name, he had a delightfully dry sense of humor and made excellent suggestions. The food was great and we appreciated the late service.
