Great food. Great service. Great location to the SF Playgouse and inexpensive parking garage.
Dinner menu was not interesting.
Prices were high for the quality of menu. They remembered that we had a bday celebration in our party, but that's the only plus. Sorry, wanted to like, and was highly rated in overall reviews, but was not a winner in our experience
Great experience. Food was very tasty and ambiance is typical San Francisco which is great.
They advertise a lunch menu but have a very limited brunch menu
Great food. Great service.
Very limited lunch menu:maybe a total of 8 items to choose from.
Best mussels ever!
Scala's is my GO TO restaurant when I am in the Union Sure area. It never disappoints! This time I was dining alone but was made to feel very welcome. Food outstanding as always, excellent service. Fluffly ricotta gnocchi with peas was GREAT!!
The excellent service from the waiter made the experience very nice!
They were out of three main dishes with red meat which made it very difficult to order for someone with a shell fish allergy. They also didn’t have the rosè we wished to order. The menu doesn’t accurately describe many of the dishes. Although the octopus was cooked perfectly, it was so spicy we couldn’t enjoy any of the other flavors. Had we known it was a spicy dish we may not have ordered it, but it was not indicated on the menu and the waitress didn’t mention it when we asked about the dish. The chicken was a bit dry and the ricotta gnocchi was drenched in peas making it taste like grass. Although, they did have a very fluffy texture & were certainly fresh. The side of broccolini and our wine selections were the best part of the meal. We had a glass of the 2016 Red Car Rose of Pinot Noir and the Vermentino. I also did enjoy the flavor of the olive oil at the table.
Love this little gem of an Italian restaurant off Union Square in the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. The food is fantastic with great dishes like the meatballs, the swordfish and the pastas. Plus, they have Pizzas for the kids. When you arrive at Scala's, you'll be greeted by the maître d'hôtel Natlya who is quite simply the heart and soul of Scala's. She welcomes guests with a warm smile that makes you feel immediately at home.
If you love Italian food and you're in San Francisco--do put Scala's Bistro on your list!
I've eaten at Scala's on several trips to San Francisco and the food never disappoints!
Always a favorite when in the City. Excellent service. Delicious foods with a nice menu for all palates. This was my first brunch and it did not disappoint.
Not enjoyable and wouldn’t recommend as there are plenty of better options in the city. Food is maybe average and service was ok, but the dining experience was sub par. Seated at table for 2 with reservation made weeks in advance for 4 people and out of 2 items ordered by the group during a 6pm reservation. Many other things but would advise other dining experiences in the city first!
They made our anniversary perfect!
For us, a regular "go-to" restaurant. Swordfish was excellent.
Great Anniversary dinner. Seated promptly, friendly service, good recommendations from the way, and most importantly, very tasty meals. The burrata was phenomenal. Field green and little gem salads were incredible. And the ricotta gnocchi was amazing. Jeremy took great care of us and treated us to dessert.
Great for special occasions or family dinner. We were painted here by several friends and we’d come again for sure.
Worst San Francisco experience. Restaurant very nice but overly priced for quality of food and service. Had a reservation, arrived on time and hostess was no where to be found, which hats off to her for doing everything from hosting to serving but don't have people waiting at the front for 10 minutes without acknowledgement. Once we were going to be seated, they wanted to seat us at the smallest table in the corner of the restaurant, requested a booth instead. Once seated, requested wine list, asked for 3 different bottles which were all on the menu, yet out of stock. Asked the waiter to recommend something comparable that was in stock, once he brought it, couldn't try, because it was only sold by the bottle; expensive bottle that neither one of us liked. Next, ordered veal parmagiana, which was too thick and as I'm eating found a hair not on the cheese, instead intertwined within. Returned and yes they were very apologetic and took off the bill. Ordered the raviolis half n half which were pretty bland, and cold. Best thing of the night was the burrata appetizer. Final kicker was, while sitting in the restaurant I receive an email from opentable that, the restaurant had noted me as a "no show" and I would be deducted 100pts. Opentable as always resolved for me, but that was besides the point at that point. Honestly, would never return.
Very enjoyable dinner. Booking was easy. Service staff were personable and added to the dining experience.
We went there in the last time reservation and they were in a hurry to clean and close
Overpriced dinner. Quality of food was good but way too expensive for what you actually get.
Very nice meal, outstanding service from Tashi! Ravioli with lemon cream sauce was enjoyed by my mother and daughter, mother said best pasta dish she has ever had. This was our second visit as we had come back for daughter to have the strawberry rhubarb cheesecake as she couldn’t stop thinking about it lol. Will definitely go back next time we visit San Francisco.
We had theater tickets and our waiter was great in ensuring we got our meal in a timely manner. We love eating at Scala's. Great food, great service, and great SF atmosphere. It's one of our go-to restaurants for a special meal.
We were staying at the Drake so this was a convenient option for us. The menu looked good so why not... the one thing that I wanted from the menu was (for some reason) not being served per our waiter. The food was fresh but I thought it was a bit over priced and a little underwhelming. With all of the options in the area, we will probably not go back.
Rude hostess, allowed another lady to cut in front of me when she knew I had been standing there waiting. Very slow and suboptimal service for a restaurant of this caliber. Waited over 30 minutes to get bread. Waiter was friendly but didn’t seem to have the time:
A visit with friends. Perfect location. Energetic yet quiet enough to carry on a conversation. The food was very good.
This was my Birthday Dinner and I was not impressed.
They knew it was my Birthday and did nothing to make it special.
My food was uncooked and left on the plate with no questions.
Drinks took a long time.
Just not a great experience especially for the $.
Delicious as always. Our server was exceptional—knowledgeable and attentive without being pesky. A lovely meal before the theater
We haven’t been to Scala’s in years! It is a good spot to go before /after theater in Union Square. The dishes were good - swordfish was prepared just right, the ravioli was mediocre but the octopus appetizer was very tasty (not always the case). Place was bustling at 5:30-6:00 on Saturday night. We will definitely return if we are at local theater.
At first we were disappointed that our favorite pasta, orecchiette was no longer offered on the menu. We made other selections which turned out to be fabulous choices! Always a great meal but object to the surcharge for employee benefits. Your prices have gone up, which I am willing to pay but it is Scala owners that are responsible for your employees benefits, not us.
Great ambiance and good food - service is always good especially the reception.
Good service and good food. It could be a overall good dinner if they provided dessert menu after we finished our main course. It’s a busy restaurant. Reservation is highly recommended.
It is our spot to go after visiting MoMa, a play or some shopping. Wonderful atmosphere, tasty food, friendly and accommodating staff.
My girlfriend and I went to celebrate 3 years together and were not disappointed. The food was incredible and the service was also amazing. We were given a dessert the said “Happy Annoversary” which was a kind gesture in itself, but they took it a step further and took care of it all together! Definitely coming back next time I’m in SF.
I’ve eaten here many times and always gave a five star review, but on this visit the food wasn’t as appealing. We ordered the portobello sandwich which came with a side salad. The salad was overdressed. The avocado which was to be part of the sandwich was just a very very thin smear of mashed avocado on the bun. In the past, their desserts have been beautiful to look at and inspired. Unfortunately, the sundae wasn’t well constructed. We didn’t finish it.
On the plus side, the baby lettuce salad with pine nuts, apricots and goat cheese was very good. The french fries are great and their barista makes excellent cappuccinos. Our server was excellent as always.
I believe yesterday was just one of those difficult days for them and will continue to look forward to dining here in the future
I love Scala’s Bistro, one of my favorite places to go to in San Francisco! My friend and I were celebrating our birthdays, what a perfect place to celebrate!
Another great meal!
Great food, fair prices and a vibrant ambiance. Service a bit slow, but, it was a busy night!
We were in San Francisco for the weekend to celebrate a major birthday and treated the honoree and family to dinner. Scala's has always been a go to spot for us but we were amazed and the change in food an attitude. Service was poor and slow, the manger kept pouring water saying our server would be not be long. She was not long she was absent. The food had changed and was just okay ( maybe an off night for the chef or maybe a cost cutting process.) Dessert of gelato arived melted after an oddly long wait. Better luck next time but it will be a while before we return. Looking for new favorites in SF.
