Italian
Since 1995, Scala's Bistro has garnered a reputation for classic, elegant dining. Warm, earth tones, original murals, beaded bistro lamps, and rich, mahogany booths evoke a dramatic Old World café. Fresh, innovative, Italian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes enhance the Scala’s menu while continuing to pay homage to the old Scala’s favorites.

Food was ok, nothing special. Mushroom pasta was heavy handed. Wine was way marked up. Service was great

+Scala's Bistro has large portions -- too large large in my view. You need to share the salads and pastas and even then you'd need to share an entree. Italian restaurants in the US seem to have decided the pasta course should be enormous and filling instead of the small "primi" or first course it should be. That said, the little gem salad (shared) and radiatore pasta (not shared -- treated as an entree) were excellent. The specialty cocktails are especially good - we both had the Mr. Powell and thoroughly enjoyed it. Prices are San Francisco-reasonable for the amount of food you get, but I would definitely prefer less food at a lower price.

The place was just what we wanted: quiet, good food and service. Because of renovations or construction around, there was not a great ambiance.

Lleno y ruidoso. Con muy buena calidad en las pastas (hechas en casa). Las pizzas son de un solo tamaño (individuales) y están cocinadas en horno de leña. El resto de la comida es bastante estándar. Los precios están muy alineados a otros restaurantes de la zona.

I have dined over the past 20 years at Scala's Bistro. I hadn't been since the major renovation. Now sadly, it resembles a chain coffee shop. At lunchtime only brunch is served on Saturday. The Lunch menu used to available. We settled for pizza and salad. My out of town guest said the food wasn't remarkable as I had promised. Gone is the charm & elegance.

The menu is limited, it is extremely LOUD. All in all, it is too loud in the restaurant to enjoy the meal. I found myself having to yell with my table mates so we could follow a conversation. My ears are still ringing... Genuinely unpleasant to the point of creating a terrible experience. Fine food should be served in an atmosphere where one can savor the flavors not a simulation of a McDonald's street corner.

Picked Scala’s from out of town and arrived for a business dinner. The location was easy to find and experience was wonderful. A diverse menu and welcoming staff makes it a great spot for a biz dinner.

Our waiter Bruce was the best part of the evening. My 86 year old mom has been going to this restaurant for years and she said Bruce was "old San Francisco" - which is a huge compliment. The asparagus pizza was amazing and way better than I expected!

Excellent meal, house made pasta was perfect. Three separate dishes, sauces we flavorful, but light. All ingredients both vegetables and fish we super fresh. We had an early meal to make a show so the restaurant was only 3/4, that said, service was excellent. Highly recommend.

This is one of my favorite pre-theater restaurants, which I first discovered when it was one of only a handful of post-theater eateries. It’s always been very good, but they’ve noticeably upped their game to EXCELLENT.
On this occasion I thoroughly enjoyed everything - the roasted beet salad was fresh, light, and flavorful, the house-made pappardelle with pork sugo was richly flavorful, and the dark chocolate budino was fantastic!

Dined at Scala's Bistro two nights (Thursday & Friday) in a row. Both were crowded, so I recommend reservations. The service is excellent and if no reservations, they will try to seat you ASAP with seating to wait. The Italian dishes are very good--I had linguine with clams--excellent. One person at my table said the pizza was not so good, but I didn't try it. Dessert also good. The only negative I have is the noise level. One must shout to be heard across the table. Otherwise, I love the place. Very convenient to hotels around Union Square Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Will visit again when in the area.

Been going here for years and years. Never disappoints. Great food, atmosphere and service. Natalie the manager/hostess is outstanding. Our server was also terrific. Only problem was the 'little gem' salad was not up to par. Bitter and just not very good.

Service was great, food menu however was not impressive. Tried the goat cheese pizza with red peppers and some green leafy vegetable. The combination of those flavors were horrid and did not mix well what-so-ever. Question of the chef has tasted this particular pizza. The flavor had a sour flavor which we needed to take off the peppers and green leafy veggie.
The pasta selections were basic yet pricey. Hard when able to go to North Beach area and pay less for better options.
