The noise level was over the top, and we sat in the quieter section of the bar. Very busy inside a very nice hotel. Location was great. Was disappointed with the quality of the food. I think we had been spoiled by a better experience the night before at another restaurant. Wine list was just OK, nothing to write home about. Overall, a little disappointing. Probably a better place to eat lunch, than dinner.
Wow, Noisy! Husband and I went on a Monday evening. We got a booth and couldn’t even converse across the table due to the high volume in there. It was very uncomfortable towards the end of our meal. The Caesar salad was great. Garlicky goodness! Hubby had linguini with clams. Ha. It had 5 clams in the shells on it and the rest were canned. Disappointing since that is the star of the dish. I got the papparadelle (sp) with pork which was good. Friendly wait staff.
Fantastic Italian food and really lovely wine list. LOVED the coffee crunch gelato!
I had pizza. Since they have a wood fired oven my expectations were high but I was disappointed.
The pizza dough was very ordinary. Good dough if go to Pizza Hut but disappointing for such a nice restaurant.
I grew up in Italy thus I know what a good pizza is.
The toppings were of good quality except the aragula dressed with vinegar. It didn’t belong there.
Great meal and attentive service. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff and management went out of their way to make the meal and night special and memorable.
We love this restaurant, food very good, ambiance, service great. Only drawback, a little loud.
Very good food. Not Per Se of course, but could not find a problem. Great service added a lot. Found a very good medium-priced wine on the per-glass menu via allowed tasting of several. Waiter complicit in the plot. Overall a great experience.
Great food, as always. Wonderful service, as usual. Very loud and noisy, as usual.
We loved everything about Scala's. The service was outstanding. The food was sublime. We can't wait to go back!
This is our go-to restaurant if we're going to the theater. Today I had the best ever Cobb salad with the freshest ingredients. Finished off my lunch with a rich cup of coffee.
Great service! The gnocchi was mediocre and the salad had root vegetables that my husband didn't like.
Excellent dinner after a day of touring San Francisco
The good food and friendly atmosphere were just as I remembered from my visits quite a long time ago. It felt good to be back. BRAVO SCALA'S
Scala's Bistro remains one of my favorites, both for the atmosphere and the food. A Caesar salad made with big crisp, fresh stalks of romaine plus the meatballs off the appetizer menu made a very filling dinner. A little pricey, but that's to be expected given the location just off Union Square.
Food, atmosphere was great.
Really delicious food. Not huge portion sizes. Great service!!
Perfect setting, delicious food, server Sarah was amazing, overall wonderful evening
Amazing food and service. Our waiter was wonderful. He made excellent wine suggestions. I will recommend the restaurant to everyone going to San Fran.
Got a seat near the kitchen which was too loud. It didn’t seem private at all. The food was excellent hence can’t complain! It compensated for the ambiance and noise and space. Loved the dessert too!
Found the restaurant online and was not disappointed. nice ambiance, very good service, the food was good and prices were OK.
we had a lovely evening
This is a great place to go for a pre-theater lunch or dinner as the staff are professional. The food is good and the menu includes both seasonal as well as regular menu items. The food is well prepared and that makes for a good experience. Considering its location in Union Square, it is a great place for a meal. The only difficulty is the access to the bathrooms; need to take a very slow elevator.
Food was good and service was great. Both waiters we had each day were friendly and personable.
Beautiful restaurant and right next door to Sr. Francis Drake Hotel where we were staying.
Had both lunches there and was perfect
Classic, always satisfying. Menu can be updated, but love the atmosphere. I will keep coming back.
Scala’s never disappoints. Always a fresh delicious menu.
We are from New Zealand and I always book fir at least one meal when I’m in San Francisco it’s been consistently great for many years I have recommended it to many travelers
Hadn’t eaten here in years. Not our favorite table, but the food was great and the waiter was a real pro.
Perfectly located near my hotel. Reccomend this restaurant because the overall experience was superb!
The restaurant was nice and busy. The food decent, but nothing spectacular. For dessert, we ordered The Taste of San Francisco. This was a bit disappointing, as it is just a small bonbon box, coming in a box. Would have expected something not pre-packaged.
Limited menu, big effort to be “cuisine” like but they miss the mark. My biggest issue is they are way overpriced, I mean $60 for a standard, nothing special ribeye steak (not even in-bone).
I’m sure many people enjoy this place, just wasn’t my cup of tea.
We had two appetizers that were fabulous. One was peppers and aioli, the other was watermelon balsamic. We will definitely return!
We have been going to scholars for years. This is our travel day restaurant. The food and service is always excellent!
The quality of food and service was excellent. And we’ve been at least a dozen times. The shocker for us was the bill!
My experience at scala’s was unfortunately overshadowed by a waiter who should have been more honest about the serving sizes. We asked on 3 occasions before ordering what the portion sizes were like and whether we over ordered. We were assured we hadn’t. We felt like we had to eat as much as possible so as not to waste food or money. We left feeling uncomfortable rather than having enjoyed what was incredible food. Unfortunately that ruined my experience of what could have been an exceptional dining experience.
Food was overly salty. Good service.
Didnt have any premium tequila, went there for the veal parm...they took it off the menu...spotty service...generally disappointing. The vesuvio potatoes were only bright spot.
Great ambiance, awesome experience and great service and food
The food was amazing and our waiter was really nice and funny.
Hotel concierge recommended this place and it was great.
Good service and good food
Busy, noisy, great location, good cheerful service and very good food. Good value. for money.
