In bustling Union Square, Scala’s accessibility makes it the ideal destination for local and out-of-town guests. Whether you are planning a corporate lunch, rehearsal dinner, or celebratory reception Scala’s Bistro has the perfect space.View Private Dining Details
I ordered the grilled swordfish and expected it to be dry with dill sauce or lemon on the side. It came on a piece of toast covered in a sauce. The sides were one small fingerling potato, a few small ousters and three slices of a squash. I would have been happier with a smashed/twice cooked red potato or garlic mashed potatoes an some grilled asparagus. Not impressed.
Always great food and service and I love sitting in the bar area by the window!
Great waiter and friendly service
Looking at the number of reviews and ratings, I expected better. Nowhere close to a 4, at best a 3. The food was subpar, no flavor in the pasta dishes, and the fritters weren’t special. A letdown at the least. Then there’s the reception, we arrived 30 minutes early and we were seated only 7 minutes before our reservation time to a table that was set and available since the time we arrived. Truly a subpar experience overall.
Food was delicious and quick to be served! Wait staff seemed to need some extra help.
It was for my sons 10th birthday and they decorated a nice plate with a desert.
Always great w great staff
Still one of my very favorites. friendly reception who accommodated my change of table request and friendly waiter. Good food as always.
One small complaint from hubby on his pork chop. Meat was cut for him ( I assume for innovative presentation) and bone was on the side...😉
Everything was wonderful from the time we arrived. Service was great. We had visitors from France and it was nice to have time to visit. The server was very attentive to our needs to visit Good was terrific.
Highly recommend this restaurant.
Highly recommend. Whether you’re a thirsty shopper looking for a watering hole, or a transient visitor needing an evening hideaway, Scala has a simple yet thoughtful menu that satisfies rookie and veteran Italian restaurant goers and is perfectly located. Cheers!
The best meatballs I have ever eaten but found menu limited, wine selection overpriced.
The service and food were impeccable. We were celebrating my birthday and a special anniversary and the restaurant made every effort to make it special for us. We had a very nice table and a few surprises to make us feel even more special. Food and wine were great. We always visit Scala’s when in SF and we are never disappointed. It is one of our favorite restaurants. Loved it❣️
Dined with my 2 kids (10 & 17) and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Excellent quality food and experience. Wait staff who greet you by name shows the level of first class service. ❤️
Whenever I am in SF, I grab a bite at Scala’s Bistro. When I say “grab a bite” I mean have a delicious meal quickly. If one wants to have a leisurely meal at Scala’s Bistro that is totally okay too. The pasta dishes taste like my mother-in-law’s homemade pasta. The sauces are amazing, and be sure to have a salad. The salads are fresh w/ wonderful combinations of greens, cheeses and nuts. The staff are extremely attentive and kind. Don’t choose Scala’s if you want a quiet meal. This place is energetic!
Poor service on a Thursday night at 8 pm. Food was mediocre.
Have loved this restaurant for many years. It is 'quintessential old SF'. Food is consistently excellent, as is service.
just wonderful! thank you all SO much- we had an awesome time.
the food was outstanding- service fabulous... I could feel the Scala's love!
and someone behind the bar knows how to make a martini super dirty- perfect!
Really nice place to have dinner. The service was fantastic, very attentive staff, and really well made food.
Very good Italian food and great service
Maitre D' Nathaly is simply the best and every restaurant should have a Maitre D' like her. Always welcoming with her infectious smile! My daughter and I each ordered the 16 oz prime NY with steak fries, and wow my mouth was dazzled! You must also request to be seated in Bruce's section. He is a wonderful server! So happy to have Scala's as a neighborhood gem!
Front of house manager was rude. Wasn’t able to sit at my table due to company policy, due to being a large table, there was only 5 of us! Food wasn’t cooked so had to send back. Not great customer service
Good food, good service. The pasta was amazing! Very noisy, that's why I rank, 4*.
We had not been to Scala for about 2 years where we had had a great experience and luscious food.-We wanted a pretheater lunch and decided to go back to Scalas Bistro restaurant near Golden Gate Theater.
The lunch menu was interesting so we order the Pear and Bacon Pizza ( amazing) and the charcuterie meat platter ( again amazing). Just didnt feel the same as our last visit ,
First marginal experience here - the table set up was brutal - the food took too long the waiter had too many tables and it all was made worse by no risotto- the one thing you look forward to and it isnt on the menu....
Food And wine selection was great. We had reservations for two, but were seated near the stairs leading up to the bar and a very small table. People standing around the bar actually bumped their purses and but into me while I was trying to enjoy dinner. That was disappointing. It detracted from the experience. You may want to find out where your table is when making reservations here.
Yoku is a great & attentive server!
Pleasant surprise. Fabulous food and great for pre theater
Delicious food in a vibey setting. Very good service
Great roasted fish!
Jemery, our waiter, was terrific and steered us in the right direction when it came to food and wine. This is the second year coming back for my birthday dinner. Last year’s waiter, Bruce, again an excellent waiter made it a point to come over to our table just to say “hi”. Can’t say enough for the staff, great personalities while being the consoment professional concerning the menu and the ingredients of the dishes served. Looking forward to my next visit to San Francisco and will be heading back to Scala.
We have been dining at Scala's Bistro for many years. Dining here is an event that starts with Nathaly Neveux-Kinet, the MaitreD'. She is the most gracious host , she makes you feel like you have been welcomed in her home and she is happy you are there, how special is that. Our Server was Jeremy who was excellent. I described a mix drink I had had there last year and he was able to get the bartender recreate it for me. The food was so good, so good, cant wait to go back next year.
We had not been to San Francisco in decades so my only comparison is with the cost of fine dining in Florida and Michigan. That being said, our dinner of ravioli and wine choices was very good.
They constantly change their menu to include seasonal fare. Usually when I like a restaurant, there are dishes that I miss when they leave a menu. Here, there is always something new and delicious. Several weeks ago, I had an outstanding pork chop only to find it off the menu on my next visit. No worries, the whole fish branzino with escarole did quite nicely. We go every time we're in San Francisco ( which is a lot).
The noise level was over the top, and we sat in the quieter section of the bar. Very busy inside a very nice hotel. Location was great. Was disappointed with the quality of the food. I think we had been spoiled by a better experience the night before at another restaurant. Wine list was just OK, nothing to write home about. Overall, a little disappointing. Probably a better place to eat lunch, than dinner.
Wow, Noisy! Husband and I went on a Monday evening. We got a booth and couldn’t even converse across the table due to the high volume in there. It was very uncomfortable towards the end of our meal. The Caesar salad was great. Garlicky goodness! Hubby had linguini with clams. Ha. It had 5 clams in the shells on it and the rest were canned. Disappointing since that is the star of the dish. I got the papparadelle (sp) with pork which was good. Friendly wait staff.
Fantastic Italian food and really lovely wine list. LOVED the coffee crunch gelato!
I had pizza. Since they have a wood fired oven my expectations were high but I was disappointed.
The pizza dough was very ordinary. Good dough if go to Pizza Hut but disappointing for such a nice restaurant.
I grew up in Italy thus I know what a good pizza is.
The toppings were of good quality except the aragula dressed with vinegar. It didn’t belong there.
Great meal and attentive service. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff and management went out of their way to make the meal and night special and memorable.
We love this restaurant, food very good, ambiance, service great. Only drawback, a little loud.
