Very good food and service.
Scalas Bistro is a San Francisco institution. The service and food are always amazing and never disappoint.
Food was very good and service also. Noise level unfortunately was not good, but that is typical in San Francisco.
We had a great table and the service was superb. Our waiter, Jeremy, was fun and engaging. Great pre-theatre dinner spot.
Although this is in a major shopping/touristy area it is always on my to go to list. Love the bar and food. But...this is a very busy place which sometimes impacts service. Be patient. It will be worth it.
This was the worst time I've ever had at Scala's. First, we waited 20 minutes at our table until a server appeared. We asked if the restaurant still baked focaccia and were told yes but it was not the case. Regular white bread. Then after finally bringing our wine our server told us she'd be right back with an ice bucket which never appeared. Our server also promised small plates so we could share our appetizer and, again, those never appeared. The meal was only so-so which was a disappointment because we've dined at Scala's many times and always had a good experience. I can't say that we will be back which is another bummer because there aren't many nice places for lunch downtown anymore...
I have not been to La Scala for a few years. I was pleasantly surprised to find the food as good as ever, the menu with good variety, dessert was creative and delicious. It is still a favorite place for dining downtown.
Scala's Bistro has always been a favorite for lunch or dinner when in San Francisco. Our waiter was great. Very personable and his recommendation for the ravioli was spot on. They were delicious. Interacting with him made the evening a lot of fun. And I always enjoy the true San Francisco ambience of the restaurant.
We chose Scala for its proximity to the Curran Theater -- and on past mostly-positive experiences. We were booked for a show that started at 7. I made the reservation for 5:15, their first available dinner slot. I told Open Table and the waitress that we had the theater booking. She assured us it would be no problem. We were seated at a table in the bar -- along what seemed like mostly other theater goers. We ordered two salads, a fish and two pasta entrees. The salads came right away. The entrees were incredibly slow. We ended up getting them at about 6:25 to 6:30. The whole fish was dropped off first without ceremony or apology. We had to do our own de-boning and filleting. We were so pressed for time, we had to gobble down our dinners, diminishing both the experience and the flavors of the meal. I am not likely to return. Too bad as the food was pretty tasty. Just bad kitchen management and service.
Special occasion perfect spot. Can’t beat the location next to union square. The decor and ambiance lovely . Best service and delicious food even the bread was tasty.
SADLY it was very disappointing this time. Spent the night apologizing to my daughter for the disappointing meal-instead of reveling in what a great night it could have been. We eat at Scala's all the time because it's our favorite. This time was to be a celebration and I had noted that in our reservation. We were greeted by the host and seated right away. However....Waited, waited and waited for a waiter to come by. Flagged one down and he was abrupt and said, "Well I guess I'll serve you. They didn't tell me I had this table." He went back to talk to a hostess. Looked mad, they take for quite awhile. Got his attention to take our order. Food was delivered timely by another server. Our server never checked on us to see how the food was or if we needed anything else....even water. Long after we were done we flagged him down. Had to flag down another server down to refill our water in between. When we asked for our check he could clearly see presents and birthday wrapping paper on the table. Asked if we wanted to see dessert menu. We did. He walked off and was in deep conversation again with hostess. Decided not to order birthday dessert because he clearly didn't care about our experience and we didn't want to sit for another half hour while he had another conversation with the hostess. Very sad way to celebrate. We choose Scala's over all the other restaurants in the city for the amazing food, ambiance, lively energy and (usually) great service. Expected more from my favorite SF restaurant. Would have had better service in the bar-and have!!!
Our experience was haphazard at best. We admit the waiter was probably overwhelmed, but we have a feeling that was business as usual for this lively, busy restaurant. Our party of four ordered two salads, both to be split, but he brought two of the same, both unsplit. We also ordered two main courses also to be split, but he brought only one (a pasta) that got cold before they cooked the fish for the other order. When summoned, the manager insisted on preparing another pasta order, which we did not want, but had them box up to take home. By then our waiter was getting exasperated and became surly. We left with a bad feeling about the whole experience, which was sad, as we used to come to Scala’s on a regular basis when we lived in Marin. Now that we live in Sonoma we don’t get into San Francisco very often so we were looking forward to dinner there once again. Too bad.
very good service, and excellent food, just a bit noisy.
Yummy food. Consistent yummy food and great service. Perfect for pre-theater.
Reservation is necessary. Enjoy!!!
Great food. Great service
Our waiter was outstanding!
Always a good experience. Great staff! Very welcoming.
This place is noisy...very busy and took forever to get our food which came out wrong. Even though the manager was very apologetic and gave us a free lunch,it didn’t make up for the awful dining experience.
I cannot say enough good about my experience at Scala's. The salmon entree I had was probably the best I have EVER had. The presentation of both meals was wonderful, our waitress was very friendly and sweet.
Overpriced with limited choices during mid day.
First time to eat here for our annual family Christmas outing to Union Square. Had reservations and was looking forward to it all week. Poor service, with our server offering apologies at the end of our meal with varied excuses. Our water wasn't filled until mid way thru our meal. We asked several fast-walking staff to fill our glasses, but they never returned. We ordered the mushroom pizza, margherita pizza, burger and I had the salad and ravioli. The pizza was loaded with arugula to hide the lack of mushroom toppings, the margherita was very average, no basil, no tomatoes, no mozzarella balls, just plain topping. My ravioli arrived when everyone else was finishing. My husband did enjoy his burger. (The condiments arrived after he finished it!) We rarely saw our server so couldn't order more wine with our meal. (We were lucky to get the water) We saw other patrons rolling their eyes , with one annoyed that they hadn't received bread and butter after waiting a while to be served. We read some of the other reviews with the same complaints but thought we'd try for ourselves. With all the anticipation to be going to Scala's, it ended up being a very disappointing experience. The family consensus is to find another Holiday restaurant next year. We won't be coming back.
Not good. Waited 30 mins after our booked time and ate in the bar. Menu limited, service sporadic, food mediocre. $28 for a glass of champagne. Will not return for sure.
Very disappointed in the menu Italian favorites are gone! Too basic brunch options. Would not go back again with current menu.
We had lunch on a Saturday afternoon. After being seated we didn’t have a server for over 30 minutes, no water, no bread, no drink orders. The server apologized that they were slammed and under staffed. I would expect the management would expect it to be busy on a Saturday in December. We did enjoy the food.
It was very busy. The service was horrible. The waiter kept apologizing, but nothing got better. We wanted to order additional items, but never had the chance. The food is overpriced for what you get.
Too loud, service was bad, but the waiter was bussing his own tables. The host stand and those manning it were great. But the food was sub par, the service too slow and the value is ridiculous.
We were in San Francisco for a seminar, and we were staying overnight in the city, so I selected Scala’s because my friend had recommendede it, and because it was a pleasant walk from our hotel. We enjoyed the food, but the noise level is pretty intense, and not conducive to talking. It’s a happening place for sure, but overall I would prefer something a little less hectic.
First let me say I do love Scala’s. Our server was great but the food coming out was soo slow(9:15 on a Thursday night). Problem food was un believably salty. Server comped one of 3 entrée and was very forthcoming with the offer. The chef needs to make sure that the food is being tested. All three were un able to eat. Please check for salt. I will be back.
Nice place to celebrate with family or friends in the City.
Very good service and kind staff. Very close to Union Square.
Everything was great and everyone as well!
Except Cappucino was lukewarm and did not have time to ask for warmer.
Great food, excellent service, beautiful place, but TOO LOUD to have any sort of conversation
So loud it gave me a headache
I don’t think that they can do anything about it
Great food, great old San Francisco ambience; we had a great time!!
Delicious and fantastic waiter & maitre’d/ manager!
I come here every year during holidays. Always have enjoyed the food and the excellent service we’ve had. Will definitely be back!
Good food, but nothing really stood out. The place gets really busy with business lunches and ladies who 'lunch'. It definitely does cater to a certain cliente and prices reflect that. Overall, a nice spot but not spectacular.
Food and craft vocktails were exceptional. Never would I inagine gin and tonic as presented 😊 and our server was attentive, non obtrusive and friendly - great service combination.
4 Dec..meeting friend in City for lunch.
Outstanding food and service. Thanks to Natalie for giving us such a great table for two for our 6 o’clock reservations. Please mark it our favorite.
Food was great. How do they make chicken that moist? And the Bolognese sauce perfect as usual. Our waitress was super friendly and on time. Ambiance happening as usual.
Went for lunch, food was excellent! I had the special - artichoke risotto. My 2 friends had the portobello mushroom sandwich, which was so big they had to eat it with a knife and fork : ) All the dishes were very fresh and delicious. I thought it was good value for what we had. The service was excellent and the restaurant was very nice. Would definitely go again.
Scala s is my favorite place for breakfast.
Great atmosphere and amazing food.
The breakfasts are delicious .
The service is terrific.
Great place for cocktails too.
